One year a long time ago, there were penguins who didn't wear hats when swimming. This made their mothers livid. "Unacceptable!" Frightened, they screamed, "Bears!" Nobody seemed convinced so instead of going swimming they tried juggling. Their mothers tried everything they thought would teach her a skill. However, she couldn't even make oatmeal without disastrous results. So, the penguins gathered money (obviously) trying to purchase a bear. Towering over them, a grizzly beast danced, devouring all bears with such ferocity that even God enjoyed it. Afterwards, God congratulated the penguins and applauded them. "You did it!" Suddenly, the grizzly beast started dancing vigorously. There was an acromantula nearby. It challenged the preconception that magical mushrooms were magical. Sparkling, the magical mushrooms were

The sites are probably not updated realtime, so it isn't worth the effort and added stress to check them more than twice per day. That said, I still look several times a day.

I have a feeling that things are moving along a bit more quickly for folks on the Information side. Communications seems to be a little more relaxed and laid back, and I verified that with a current and a former coworker in that department. The email I got from my primary POI was worded a bit strange - "Would you have time for a brief (15 mins) chat sometime before Wed? Say Tue 5 pm? " I don't know what the rush was for a meeting before Wednesday, since I could have spoken to him before or after the class I have with him on Thursday (I am currently in the Master's program). Anyway, the meeting went well, and our interests run overlapping and parallel with one another. He also mentioned that he prefers to work with students that did their Master's or Undergrad in the department, since they were in his words 'known quantities', I did/doing both, so I am very hopeful.

I am in a totally different field, but interviews are interviews - My expectations were as follows - By the time you get to the interview stage, you have already passed through all of the coarse filters (LOR, GRE, prior transcripts, SOP etc.) and you are being checked to see that you are not the square peg trying to fit into a round hole. It mostly about seeing if your research interests fit that of your POIs and the rest of the department. Anyway - I had an interview yesterday (both POIs at the same time), it started out as light banter, then went into research interests and how well they fit with both POIs. In my case they were both parallel and overlapping with both, but distinctly different from either.

Funding studies in Germany without speaking German
avflinsch replied to pedropabloerr's topic in The Bank
Quite a few of the programs are actually taught in English, but the schools require some proficiency in German, or will require you to take some sort of German as a second language class while you are there. My daughter is in a similar position - she took a few classes in Kassel over the summer with very limited German, and is looking at a second master's or PhD program there when she finishes the one she is currently in stateside. -

Yes it did, our research interests aren't quite the same, but do overlap in many areas.

Rutgers has only just started sending out admit notifications - only about 50 so far (I have been a fulltime employee there for 13 years, and wrote part of the system that creates the network IDs, so I see them on a daily basis), most have been for Chem, Bio and Engineering. The application deadline was Jan 15, and it takes the admissions department a few days to start looking at things, so don't sweat about anything yet. I see that your field is Communications,. so it is the same program I am applying to - Communication, Information and Library Studies. My area is on the info side, and I got an interview request from my POI (phrased as a 'brief chat') late on Sunday evening, so things are just starting to move along.
-
My LinkedIn page constantly gets visits from "Employee of Rutgers", which isn't unusual, since I am a fulltime employee there in addition to being a parttime grad student, . I also got a "request to add to network" on Saturday from my POI - again not unusual as the department is quite big on connecting students to faculty and staff there so I did not give it a second thought since I had my first in-person class with him on Thursday, but never mentioned my PhD application to him. I did get an email from him late Sunday evening, asking if I had time for a brief chat about my application (I am assuming that it is an unofficial interview of some sort) - scheduled for today, so my fingers are definitely crossed.
