Hi! Mini-vent time!! So I'm kind of experiencing anxiety at the moment trying to apply for grad school. I've emailed 2 professors 2-3 times over the last month asking if they'd be able to write letters on my behalf and no responses. I currently have a SPED professor writing me a letter and a former supervisor agree to write me one. As backups, I have two SPED teachers I worked alongside, my current supervisor (principal at a school), and an assistant principal from my current work site. I haven't asked any of my backups yet because I wanted to have 2 or 1 CSD professor on board. I'm aware of remote learning occurring at my university too, so I'm sure all professors emails are swapped. ? I'm worried about the possibility of one falling thru, having no CSD professors to write me letters; therefore causing me to put applying on hold. I'm aware a lot of admission committees want to hear from other CSD professors about academics and the ability to be successful in graduate school. Sometimes I feel like having most of my letters coming from supervisors or colleagues may work against me, *shrug* My major GPA was a 3.3, but last 60 units wad a 3.58. Cumulative GPA was a 3.4. Low GRE scores (280, AW: 3.00) and I'm studying to retake it. A lot of extra curricular activities when I was in school, worked in special education was an paraprofessional, ABA therapy.. I really need some encouragement right now. It just feels like bad timing, idk. Is anyone else experiencing or faced this dilemma before?

Hello! Hope everyone is having a great Friday. I finished a draft of my personal statement for one of the schools I'm applying to. Would anyone like to read it and give me some feedback/constructive criticism? Thanks in advance ?

Maybe finding a job where you can work on the weekend. There's babysitting, part-time teacher's aide, or maybe selling clothes or other things you don't use or wear anymore. I sell part-time on Poshmark and Mercari to make extra money. Maybe a part-time job on campus? If you exhaust all your options and doesn't work out, you could take out another loan for cost of living.

Hello everyone! I began writing practice GRE essays to improve my score and familiarize myself with the format and expectations of the AWA section. Can anyone read my sample essay and attempt to grade it? if not, then advice will suffice. I will include the sample prompt and my response below. Thanks in advance! The emergence of the online “blogosphere” and social media has significantly weakened the quality of political discourse in the United States. Reason: When anyone can publish political opinions easily, standards for covering news and political topics will inevitably decline. Write a response in which you examine your own position on the statement. Explore the extent to which you either agree or disagree with it, and support your reasoning with evidence and/or examples. Be sure to reflect on ways in which the statement might or might not be true, and how this informs your thinking on the subject. Anyone, regardless of political party and qualifications, should have the freedom to write their own political opinions on the internet and social media. The argument claims that the emergence of social media and blogging has weakened the quality of political discourse in America and has led to a decline in standards for covering news and political topics. I disagree with this statement. First, social media and blogging had led to an increase in resources and a diverse range of topics and opinions. Having different sources does not cause a decline in standards. The standards should not come from only a limited number of individuals and corporations. By doing so, the people are not able to see more than one side of a story. The quality of political discourse improves if bloggers and social media users are able to report news and write about political topics. Second, it is confirmed that media companies and newspapers are strongly influenced by political parties. For example, television news networks such as CNN and Fox News report on news and politics in vastly different ways. During the 2016 Presidential election, many news anchors reported that Hilary Clinton would easily win the election based on their polls and surveys. Fox News reported in support of Mr. Trump and displayed their survey in polls, indicating that he could win. These are two examples how much power a political party can have over a news company. Companies that publish a news article that is influenced by or is biased towards one party that turns out to be ultimately false and the motive was political gain. This weakens the standards of journalism. In journalism, one is taught to deliver news in a non-biased, neutral fashion. One must not report to support a political agenda as it becomes corrupt. Having a supportive stance on neutrality among bloggers and social media users strengthens the quality and standards of reporting the news. Having a variety of sources in news due to bloggers and social media improves the standards of delivering news to the American people. By limiting who can report on political topics, it weakens the quality of political discourse. Delivering news by the people and for the people is what the USA should be held to a high standard.

My test date is near the end of the month and I'm starting to get anxious. I've been reviewing consistently since January but I'm nervous about I still won't be prepared and my score won't improve. This will be my second attempt. First time was not good at all. My grandmother passed away 2 years and I wasn't mentally ready to go back into studying until a month closer to the day I took it. Studying the first time was not consistent. Had a lot of personal things going on, but I'm in a better place. Encouragement and positive words are much appreciated ?

Statement of Purpose hooks, help please!

I really appreciate your 2 cents!! This means a lot to me. Thanks y'all -
Hello all! I will be graduating in 2 years with my Bachelor's degree in Communicative Disorders and I started outlining my Statement of Purpose (SoP) early. I probably will start applying to grad programs in 2017 or 2018. I'm not sure if I want to apply immediately after I graduate or take a year or 2 off building work-related experience... Anywho, I have listed a few possible introduction hooks that I want to include in it, but I'm not sure if there's potential in them. 1) My interest/curiosity for foreign language (I live in a multicultural neighborhood with Spanish-speaking neighbors, I learned French in high school, I started learning Korean when I entered college, and I'm interested in sign language/ASL). 2) Childhood struggles (I was in early intervention, was diagnosed with mild Cerebral Palsy, and had speech therapy until high school.) I was developing at a slower rate than my classmates, but I eventually caught up with everyone 3) Using my last name as a joke of some sort. I love phonetics because I can write my last name in IPA because it's difficult to pronounce it when you're looking at it on paper. It's not pronounced the way it looks on paper! I like these ideas, but I'm not sure if any of them will make me stand out amongst everyone else that's applying to grad school and if one is better than the other. Suggestions and input is great appreciated! Thanks guys and gals )

Hello! I recently took a Research Methodology class and received a C+. It's not a statistics class from what I heard from other people in my undergrad program. It's only required for those who wish to apply to the graduate program at my university. My question is this - will that class be taken into consideration in terms of my GPA when I apply to other schools. Since it's only required for one grad program, I'm not sure if this class will be included in my major GPA since it's the lowest grade I've received in the Communicative Disorder program and it's not a required major class for other graduate programs. My GPA right now is a 3.08 and I have a lot of major classes left to take in order to raise my GPA. I will talk to my advisor after the spring semester starts so I can her her input as well. I've been busy with classes and other stuff and the question has never come up when I've talked with her in the past. Finals are this upcoming week and I'm currently hitting the books Thanks!

Hello everyone! I just have a few questions regarding research experience. How did you guys contact professors in your field? I was briefly talking to an upperclass student a few months ago. We are in the same SLP undergrad program and we talked about grad school, GPA, and such.. and to be honest it intimidated me a lot! I asked her about possibly getting into a research group on campus with one of our faculty members in the department, but she said that professors only take A students. I have taken 6 major classes so far and I have gotten B's or B pluses in all of them because I was working too many hours. One of my other friends who is also an SLP undergrad student told me to contact a certain professor because of my interest in Phonetics and phonemes. Do professors usually only take A students for their research or does it not matter as much. I know every professor is different. Should I just go for it and email the professor? I would love some feedback, advice, suggestions, anything! I also need some encouragement from fellow SLP students (undergrad/graduate)

Hello everyone! I just have a quick question about tuition reimbursement. I know that there are companies out there that offer some type of tuition reimbursement for their employees in school. Does anyone know if there are any hospitals across the country, California included, that provides this type of financial assistance? Thank you!
