  1. 1. If you're seriously considering Harvard, you need some decent work/internship experiences. Your current location in DC is great for getting these kinds of internships. I'd target the State Department's program if you're interested in that foreign policy type experience. Take Microeconomics; must policy programs require at least some coursework in that before applying to their programs. Statistics will be very helpful, as I know through a friend attending Kennedy that your first year is very stats heavy. Also start saving your course syllabi - Harvard requires a quant resume separate from your normal resume listing out all quantitative courses you've taken or quantitate skills you've used in internships/work experience/other coursework that could lean towards quant. 2. I say MPP as its a generalist degree or MSFS from SFS...but not sure if you want to be a double Hoya or if you want to leave the Hilltop. You're at Georgetown already, so take a look at the McCourt School's MPP. Their admin is in Old North but I think some of the support staff moved to CarBarn.
  2. I'm attending the full time program with $0 aid, so I completely understand why you'd want to defer. I would definitely ask the Admissions/Financial Aid offices if you can add additional items to your application package in order to receive a higher scholarship offer in Fall 2020. They tell you any aid package you receive won't necessarily follow you if you defer since you'd be competing with that year's applicants for funding.

    Roanoke, VA

I am from Roanoke! Lived there for 22 years and went to Roanoke College in Salemfor undergrad. It's definitely changed a lot from when I was a kid. It's so up and coming now. The cheap cost of living is very attractive for sure. The area just got their Amtrak station back so it's much easier to travel now as the airport is awful. All of my family + friends are still there and I go home multiple times a year. If you have any specific questions, definitely message me!
  4. I'm in! This was my first choice so I'll hopefully be seeing you all on the Hilltop this Fall!
  5. Were you waitlisted for DSPP? I haven't seen MPP notifications come out
  6. haha I know! I just asked if there was a general date as I will be out of the country with no email access for a few days beginning tomorrow. which, in retrospect, will probably be healthy for me ?
  7. I cracked and called admissions. A student was covering the phones as they were in a meeting so hopefully meeting about decisions??
  8. Same, it looked like years past have been between 3/4- and 3/8
  9. Anyone who got an admissions decision, was it for MPP?
  10. Their program is all at night which is good if you are planning to work or intern during the day. I was given no funding from them as they base all of their funding decisions based on undergraduate GPAs (last time I inquired, it was 3.5) even though I've been out of undergrad for 7 years and I had a 4.0 in the graduate degree I already have. I deferred for obvious reasons; to apply to other programs.
  11. I looked three years worth of results and it seems next week or the first week of March. I'm crossing my fingers! I've had pretty good luck reaching out to the via email, so you may want to try that. They have a general grad mail address
  12. This is on my backup list because i'm local to the school & they have a pretty far out final deadline. If you don't mind, can you post your stats?
  13. Applied by the 1/5 priority deadline. And now I wait......... ?
  14. That must be a new thing this year, I don't remember seeing that on the applications page last cycle.
  15. From last year's results search, it looks like first week of March is when priority decisions came out.
  16. I didn't see a thread yet! T-minus 13 days until the Priority deadline.
  17. I was waitlisted at my top choice last cycle and have chosen to apply again after improving my resume and (hopefully) my test scores. My SOP from my original application was possibly the best thing I have, personally, ever written so I am incredibly proud of it. During the second portion of the SOP, the requirement of the school was to explain why I wanted to go there. Would it be advantageous or risky to mention that I was waitlisted last cycle and, because this is my top choice, worked harder to improve?
  18. Answering for my BF: Undergrad Poli Sci major, sub 3.5 GPA. Limited quant courses, but Arabic language skills GRE: low quant, high percentile verbal, 4.5 AWA 3 major internships; two separate state legislatures and one state agency 7 years of state legislature experience with increasing responsibilities and seniority Great LOR writers: one from state rep (current boss), one HKS alum, one academic
  19. Not me, but my boyfriend applied this year. He doesn't have a gradcafe account but this thread is very quiet this year...
  20. I only have a BA + Graduate Cert + 7 years of experience, so I tended to be quite stringent on the "single page resume" for all rule. And, while I still stick to that rule if I'm applying for employment, I do not stick to it for grad admissions. All of my resumes for grad school have been 2+ pages, detailing leadership positions and extracurriculars that your run of the mill office job probably won't care about.
  21. I did and was granted. I had a mix of campaigns, political internships and (at the time of application) 4 years of paralegal work. So 6 years in total of work experience.
  22. There are a few programs that require at least a basic background in stats/economics. Did you retake the class for a passing grade to receive credit? If not, I highly recommend taking at least a basic intro to microeconomics or intro to statistics as a non-degree seeking student at a local college (or through an online course). I got a C in a microeconomics course sophomore year and then retook it 6 years later during my application cycle and got an A, which I am sure helped. A lot of applications have the option to explain low grades/extenuating circumstances in a personal addendum or some request that you include it in your personal statement. I'd look closer at what the programs you are interested in require.
  23. George Washington and American University don't require the GRE for their MPP programs
  24. I'm hoping to get the opinion of internet strangers who are unbiased on my situation. Factors: I was accepted to School A (no funding) Wait listed at School B. School B is my top choice. I have been offered a prestigious internship for the Fall contingent upon being a graduate student (at any school) The Issue: I have a deposit in at School A because I did not want to wait all summer for School B to dangle the possibility of a wait list admission and not have anywhere to go in the Fall. School A and School B are in the same city. I would be leaving my full time job and moving to another city to attend school and the internship is unpaid. My heart is set on School B and I intend on applying again next cycle, regardless of my status at School A. However, my conundrum is is it even worth going to School A for the Fall just to keep the internship and rack up tuition + living expenses loans? My thought is even if I am denied/wait listed again at School B I will still be admitted and pursuing a degree somewhere. Or should I just forget the internship and defer to the spring semester at School A with hopes of transferring credits in the Fall to School B if I'm admitted?
