  1. You're definitely competitive with an undergrad GPA and major like that. There are many Christian Universities and Colleges with CSD programs. Your missionary work and future goals would align with their school missions. I know Operation Smile needs qualified SLPs, maybe think about taking workshops or going overseas as a volunteer with them. Also, check out @speechtherapyuganda
  2. @mcamp has a great blog. http://www.thespeechblog.com/ He's a male who is also aspiring to be a SLP and just got into grad school! All the males I know in this field are SUPER smart. Like always done first during exams and getting a 4.0 kind of smart. Diversity is very important in this field - if people are grumbling that you only got something because you're a male, then they are just throwing shade. ***::IGNORE::*** I haven't run into that many petty people in this career. I'm sure they are there, but this field is overwhelmingly supportive and trying harder to be inclusive. Talking from the woman's perspective -- It has been wonderful to be surrounded by extremely intelligent, generous, creative and strong women in positions of POWER. It's not the norm in the rest of the world and it's inspiring.
  3. UW in Seattle looks at the last 60 credits when considering GPA. They have higher GPA reqs tho... Have you looked into WICHE schools? Since you're from Cali, you can apply for resident tuition at a certain out of state schools. http://www.wiche.edu/info/publications/wrgpHandout.pdf
  4. Thanks so much for your advice! I'm actually about to take a practice GRE after writing this.
  5. Thanks for the info about the CUNY schools. Goodness... those app fees are killer... I've been trusting the US News rankings less and less as I do my research into schools. One of my professors said that it has a lot to do with politics and probably money. As long as you're excited about going to the school you are going to, that's all that truly matters. Also, thanks for the insight about New Paltz. I hadn't thought about having to drive for externships as being a drawback. I live in LA so I have to drive everywhere. Everywhere. I also grew up very close to New Paltz! I'm torn between wanting to be closer to my parents/brothers and loving living in SoCal. The other places I'm applying are near friends or my husband's family. I was a bit turned off by New Paltz's late acceptance date. Many of the other schools I am interested in accept sometime in March, and expect to hear a decision by April 15. How did you handle this or was this not an issue for you during interview/acceptance time? Did other schools have interviews other than New Paltz? I'm going to be in NY this summer, so I'm planning to visit Columbia, SUNY New Paltz, and CUNY campuses. P.S. love the pic of Bear Mountain Bridge on your profile! The Hudson Valley is SO gorgeous in the fall.
  6. Thanks for the insight into the UW program. That's fantastic about being actively recruited! Wow. That would be amazing. If you don't mind my asking, what were your GRE stats? I'm taking the GRE in two weeks. *silent scream* You have some amazing experience - you're going to make a great SLP! Have a great summer pre-grad school! Seattle is such an amazing city.
  7. Here's a link to a list of NY State SLP grad schools if anyone is interested. Heads up! I didn't check if all of them are ASHA accredited. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dxpX1hST5OhvjsVgmPtFXK1RWlKLGJJhAAhSyiU2D80/pubhtml
  8. Thanks for the tip! I didn't realize CSULA needed that... I'll double check. Good luck w apps!
  9. Glad you find it helpful! It was making me so anxious to have all this info spread out. Other type As can rejoice in the spreadsheet nerdiness. That's a great idea about %! I haven't used Ed Find a lot. To be honest, I found it difficult to find info about acceptance rates. Many people have been iffy about trusting EdFind's exact numbers, saying they are not always up to date. But I should probably call each school to get the up to date #s.
  10. Thanks for the heads up! I'm still doing research into NYC schools. I'm in NYC and Long Island this summer for work, so I'll be visiting some schools to get a better idea of what programs are like. Congrats on getting into so many schools! I'm seriously looking at SUNY New Paltz - my family is very close to there. What did you think of the program at New Paltz? Did you do your post bacc there? What was your final decision?? I'm looking at CUNY Brooklyn, Queen's and Lehman as well, but it seems like the competition is just as fierce there as in SoCal. And super kudos on the 169V! I'm taking my GREs in two weeks. Fingers crossed I get in the 160s for V.
  11. Good insight. I hadn't thought of that. What program are you enrolled in?
  12. This is why online programs are enticing. You can work and fit school around your schedule.
  13. I'm not sure about Nevada, but two of my classmates got into Northern Arizona University.
  14. Congrats on getting into all of your schools! That's a big deal. I feel a little spread out because I'm researching applications to so many schools and areas. Thanks for the heads up about UW Core and WICHE. I actually just read a bit more on their website about the Core vs. Med track. Did you apply to both tracks? I'm still debating if I want to apply to Core or both. What do you like about the Med program? I'm planning to visit the campus in September, but would love your insight. I'm interested in the research they do at UW - do you have insight into their research labs??
  15. Unfortunately, Southern California is just at competitive as the northeast. If you are a resident then you can get resident tuition in Western states through WICHE - http://www.wiche.edu/info/publications/wrgpHandout.pdf
  16. I'm also interested in online grad programs. I've asked a few people who are working as SLPs and are in positions to interview/hire SLPs. One was in a hospital setting, this other for a huge school district, and one for a private clinic - they all said that the students they interviewed/hired from ASHA accredited online programs were just as qualified and knowledgeable/prepared as those from traditional schools. ASHA is super strict with their accreditation. It boils down to, are you the kind of person who can handle being a remote student? I'm still debating this for myself!
  17. I may not get this exactly right, but from what I understand, the GRE percentages are based on everyone taking the GRE this year. To be safe, I'm studying my butt off to get into the 160s for Verbal and over 150 for Quantitative. So-Cal is not an easy place to get into a grad program! Chapman is a good school - I was thinking of applying, but I don't want to make that drive from LA. There are a couple people from my program who are going to grad school there next year. I'm also looking at programs in NY because my family is out there. PM me if you want a list of NY schools and their ranking. There are a lot more schools in the tri-state area. BUT it seems like the competition is just at fierce in NYC as in SoCal.
  18. Hi all! Here's a link to download the excel spreadsheet I've been using to get organized for Grad apps coming up in the fall. Any suggestions for edits are welcome. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14aQ9kJhmQvKICAVt6Fu6nnW0GSYU_lyUAa8DiukiuhA/pub?output=xlsx Hope this helps you out! 19. I agree about the CSDCAS vs non-CSDCAS schools. I wish all my dream schools were on CSDCAS! 8 programs seem like a good number to apply to. I would just make sure you find a backup school or two (you would be happy to attend) that you know isn't a reach with your stats. It's a lot more money to not get into any program and have to apply again.
  20. I'm a current Post-Bacc at CSULA and I know they look at the last 60 credits - so if you did a post bacc, they will mostly use your post-bacc GPA when looking at your file. They use CSDCAS they get your undergrad GPA, but since it's in a completely different field, they don't have as much consideration for it as your COMD classes. I'm in the same position. My undergrad GPA is 3.4. The advice I got from the grad students here is to get great GRE scores, and make a personal statement that really shows who I am and what I will bring to this career. Also, they look at % for GRE not the raw score. Last year they had an informational meeting about grad school acceptance. This was the person with the lowest scores they accepted in 2015 - COMD GPA is 3.8 - 84%V/64%Q on the GRE. 4-5 in writing is good. You're applying to great schools and you have good experience. Just keep studying for the GRE! Where did you get your post bacc? You have a better chance of getting in there because they already know you. Would you ever consider online programs??
  21. You are so sweet! Avg GPA is between 3.3-4.0 - BUT it's hard to get into a school in NYC/tri-state area with a GPA below 3.6. Many schools only look at the last 60 credits or (if she was a COMD major - her major GPA) TAKE THE GRE THIS SUMMER if she plans to apply in the fall. I echo the above post. Magoosh is great - she should get the apps and the online program. Avg GRE is 148-160s for both verbal and quantitative. Really good scores are in the upper 150s - Great scores are in the 160s. Verbal obviously matters the most. I know people who got into great schools with a 155V/145Q. Her Statement of Purpose (SOP) needs to be on POINT. She needs to show her passion, what makes her a good match for that school, what is driving her to be an SLP. Schools in NYC/tristate area are competitive. BUT there are a lot of programs in the area - both public and private. I'm looking at schools there, but I haven't been through the app process yet. Show her some blogs that will help spark what originally drew her to the profession. Remind her that getting into grad school isn't your career, it just feels like that when you're applying! Here are a couple that helped me wade through all the info for apps, requirements, advice, etc.: http://www.thespeechblog.com/slptobe/ https://slpecho.wordpress.com/ In the end, she needs to be the one to take this journey. You're such a supportive BF to reach out on these pages. Honestly, the next step is she needs to find a way out of the post graduation blues - it's not easy and it may take time! This is a supportive community. BUT if she starts going deep into those results pages on this website, it can be demoralizing. So many more people post about NOT getting in. The results page can be useful to a point - after it gets too obsessive and NOT representative of reality. Good luck to your GF!
  22. Hi all! I'm planning to take the GRE in a month (!!!) to be ready for grad apps in the fall. I'll take them again if i have to, but I'd really rather not. I've heard some confusing information about what exactly happens right after taking the GRE. What is the process for sending GRE grades to schools right after you take the test? Do I get to see my score Verbal/Quant and then decide or do I just send the grades with my fingers crossed? If I decide to take the GRE a second time, does CSDCAS report all the grades? Does it matter if I send a school two sets of GRE grades? How much is it to send after the test? I'm applying to some schools that are a part of CSDCAS and some that aren't. Can you brilliant experienced people please tell me all the things I don't know about submitting my GRE grades - advice, tips, clarification? thank you!!
  23. These are great ideas!
  24. Hey! I'm currently a Post Bacc student. I just replied to another post about this. The semester system will be different from my experience in quarters... I can let you know about the program in general. I've loved my time here. The program is RIGOROUS, most of the professors are EXCELLENT - join NSSLHA when you get here. There is also peer mentoring with grad students and undergrads. It's a very supportive community. I've learned a lot and this program has solidified my commitment to becoming an SLP. Private message me if you have any specific questions!
