I think it's better to help them understand the value that your degree might possibly bring to the world and your goals than fall on passive-aggressive actions demeaning their day job (oh noes you work corporate how soul crushing!).

I got waitlisted at Johns Hopkins. Would looove to go there, and it's the only place I've heard anything positive from. If someone has an offer they're not taking, please please please let them know soon <3

I do - my motivation was the thing with McGill that happened last year, and I figured that if something similar happened I'd need to have more info to calm my mind. It didn't help, mostly because my academia account is pretty dead - the few new things I can put on it I'm not allowed to for a little while longer..
Overall, I don't think they're worth it. I intend to cancel my subscription as soon as I get the last rejection

Wow. If this is right, they are meeting to review the final apps right now! And, that Skype meetings are next monday-wed. So...does this mean that theyll notify potential candidates today?? (I hope)

The worst thing is that sometimes you might get spam emails that say something like "PHD OFFER"
And you get excited, and you click on them, and really, they're just an ad for a shady online pharmacy

I've never checked my email's spam folder so regularly in all my life.

I just realised that the paper I wrote as my writing sample has been under review at a journal for 10 weeks now, which is only 2 weeks less than when they promised they'd get it back to me, so now I have one more thing to anxiously check my inbox over.

Wait-listed to Miami! I'm not sure if the waitlist is ranked. Very excited!

I have an update on the Yale rejection. On the blog, the person who posted the rejection commented, "I mistakenly entered Philosophy in The Grad Cafe survey although I had been rejected from the German department. I was unable to change my mistake. Sorry!"

Totally feel the same way. My first predicted is February 3rd but the majority are February 10-March 1, and I'll be out of town when I should be receiving 4-6 answers :/ Trying to stay calm and collected about all of this but most people are sick of me complaining and freaking out about all of this. I just want to be done with it already.

A lot of my predictions are slated to come out around my birthday (mid-late Feb). At least I'll have cake and wine to drown my sorrows as the barrage of rejections come in.

On the Facebook group the report was of a call from John Lysaker - no reason to doubt the poster (though I'll leave his name out of this here)

Not to take away from your discussion above guys, but..
God damn I'm ready to hear some results for my apps. I know some of the other programs have been releasing offers already, and none of mine are even predicted for the next two weeks, and the anxiety isn't so much killing me, as making me insufferable to anyone around me.

I found out through the DePaul department calendar that they hope to interview candidates between the 6th and 8th of Feb
This might be of interest to some - I hope this isn't the wrong place to mention this
Here's the source: http://las.depaul.edu/academics/philosophy/about/Documents/Calendar.pdf

I'm torn between two loves - history of philosophy (especially early modern and medieval) and political philosophy (especially critical theory approaches to politics). The way I put it in my SoP: I'm interested in the background to Kant's development (esp. Descartes, Hume, Leibniz and Spinoza) and the way his influence was picked up later on (esp. Hegel, Arendt, Frankfurt School).
If I stay in Australia, I have a project developing on virtue and emotions in early modern philosophy (looking at Descartes, Margaret Cavendish, and either Walter Charleton or John Smith [or both]).

Oh neat!
I see from your earlier post you're applying to some of the same schools!
Good luck to you too - maybe we'll meet in person come September.
