  1. I've found that people typically do not post their PI initials on the thread, nor do they necessarily frequent the forum. For those that may be accepted/waitlisted and do post, they are able to share information regarding their status privately. I think posting here just tends to facilitate/expedite that process:)
  2. aaaaaaand with that in mind - congratulations to the Temple poster! Would appreciate PI initials if possible, thank you!
  3. Hi guys - I dont see this thread anywhere but hoping to get this started so we may have a place to identify PI initials etc School: Date of Status: Status (Accepted, waitlisted etc): Mode of Notification (call/email etc):
  4. Well...I just found out today Suffolk U extended an interview invite for their clin psych program back on the 25th because it went to spam...would encourage others to double check their email/spam. *edit - Im releasing my interview so it should open up a spot for someone on the waitlist
  5. Was there anything in your application (a radio button) that denoted you'd like to be considered for PsyD if they are unable to offer an interview for clinical? Some programs do this from PhD to masters.
  6. Thats an excellent question but I would defer that to someone who has successfully navigated the waitlist/acceptance/rejection period post interviews (I am only interviewing at this time). Again, from my personal experience, I had emailed the PI ad nauseam after the interview and didn't receive a response (which should have been my cue to stop emailing). I learned the hard way, so I'd say that the more succinct and less disruptive you can keep your correspondence, the better. It is not uncommon for PIs to not respond to emails altogether following the interview, even if they sincerely enjoyed interviewing you, so if I had to do it all over again (and likely will after this interview period), I will only start inquiring about my status on the waitlist as the decision deadline approaches, and this will likely only be an exchange between my top choice (if waitlisted) and an acceptance at another program (i.e. a program is my top choice and I want to know where I am on the waitlist so that I can release my acceptance at another program). I honestly dont think it would hurt to discuss the chance of working under your PI as a volunteer if rejected. I had my best luck with feedback on ways in which my application could improve around march/april when interviews and decisions were more or less ironed out. I hope this all may help!
  7. When I first applied (first cycle) I emailed a professor a few days before invites were sent out and I believe it reflected poorly on me. I think it made me look desperate, which was then amplified by my lack of confidence throughout the interview, and then even more evident following the interview (tepid exchanges over email). My thought on the matter these days is that you don't want to try to convince your way into a space where you were not necessarily wanted. It is not to say that you are not qualified! however, trying to find your way into an interview is rarely achieved gracefully and sets you up for a very uncomfortable foundation with a PI. Think of it as forming a close relationship with them for 5-6 years - this should be a mutual exchange based on fit and chemistry (communication)...this is hard to achieve with someone that would potentially choose you as a plan B, or didn't choose you at all. What I do think is good practice is to email your PI of interest requesting some feedback on your application and how it can be improved.
  8. U of Arizona clinical sent out invites in december!
  9. Hey guys - has anyone heard anything back from Temple following the interview weekend?
  10. for those interested in ut southwestern, the admission committee just met yesterday!
  11. they've been sending out invites since last week but I met a bunch of folks at my first interview that basically said they got their invites on the 19th (not sure why I got mine later)
  12. sorry to request on both threads - but could the BU posters please PM me with their PI initials? would greatly appreciate it!
  13. Could the BU poster send PI initials? thank you!
  14. Thanks so much for the feedback, I'm being a bit overly analytical in anticipation of interviews
  15. Thanks guys. The anxiety is starting to manifest in over thinking..
  16. Does anyone know if it is customary to cc a PI on an email regarding arrivals/departures and accommodations surrounding an interview? I had a PI very kindly reach out to inquire of my arrival and if I secured lodging and Im concerned that it was an oversight on my part for not including her in my response to the graduate students organizing accommodations (I more so just didnt want to bog her down with minute details). I especially dont want to make this mistake multiple times - thank you!
  17. if a friend has a Psych 101 text book, I'd reference that along with your studying!
  18. Here's something thats helping me currently: I applied to programs and faculty with emphasis in neurospychology. There are a few annual conferences that are designed specifically for neuropsychological research and, as such, Ive looked up abstracts for people Im interviewing with to see what their most recent work is all about. Symposia and poster abstracts will not give excessive information away, however, you will know what's current..you'll also be familiar with their current preferred methodology and be knowledgeable about at least one active ongoing project in their lab. I'd also recommend looking for common factors across publications - do they publish with similar folks? are they publishing with a particular cohort? Feel comfortable name-dropping. You saw that your PI publishes frequently with so and so...this is cool because abc and xyz (remember to keep it focused) - or you see that your PI pulls data from the CDC...or some longitudinal cohort ...think about ways in which you could complement these areas of your PI's methods, or why you'd be interested in working with them. Pick 2 or 3 papers max that you feel like you can really speak about knowledgeably whether its because you were surprised about the results, or the limitations sparked your interest, or you were interested in the methodology or research question. This will definitely convey your interest in your PIs research! Reread your personal statement too. I felt like I epically dropped the ball in a phone interview because I described very eloquently what I was interested in in my personal statement, but then never recapitulated over the phone until ~30 minutes into the conversation. This is a document you will not have in front of you so I think it's often overlooked to recap your own resume and pitch (via a statement) to a PI sincerely hope this helps!!
  19. I think this is a great thread. Im applying for the second time now with a very different outcome than my first time, two years ago. I had applied to 14 schools (clinical psych) and only heard from one (to which I was not accepted). I was convinced that there was nothing I could have done differently or better, but that's not true. I think one thing that helped me beyond the "everything happens for a reason" bit is to remember that academia is highly insulated. Even now, I feel very strongly about the research I do and I work for a PI that is internationally recognized for her work in the subject matter...but my friends, parents, roommates, uber drivers, bartenders acquaintances (the list goes on..and yes, I bore strangers with science) have no idea who she is...and for that matter, couldn't care less. Life goes on. Life is bigger than prestige and academia. This attitude helped me to think more globally about my applications this time around. Having this attitude helped me maintain a sense of confidence in my writing (statement) and preliminary phone interviews. With all of that being said, getting into a program was and continues to be a goal for me, and as such, I think that a person should commit and do what it takes to get there. I took a 10K paycut and had to move for my new job but it was worth it because my scientific productivity was high. I think the point there is to continue to be proactive! Email PIs, reach out to folks to express interest in their work...change your environment to reflect what you hope to achieve. if you're at a dead end lab - branch out and take an educated risk. Dont rush. I can't stress that enough. Im not a spring chicken and if you looked up the term impatient in the dictionary...you'd see my surly face..being impatient. But taking your time to really refine your interests will only pay off in the end. Finally..and I mean this as much as possible in a non sugar and spice and everything nice kind of way, but remind yourself that you know your shit and that you're a worthy candidate. Always stay curious and maintain humility, but that doesn't entail discrediting your accomplishments and hard earned/acquired skills and knowledge. Work your ass off so that next time you know you crossed the t's. Wishing you and everyone whose feeling down the best of luck. Keep yr chin up.
  20. Don't despair - my first time applying, I applied to 14 schools and heard from 1. It wasn't a good feeling but it was necessary fuel to get it together for this cycle, which has been completely different. Have faith in yourself and look at it as more time to really focus and contribute scientifically. I have confidence that you'll kick ass.
  21. In terms of clinical psych apps (Im not sure if applicable) there are some circumstances where you may be waisted for an interview. For example, I know U of Florida does this. I also know that some universities interview in waves and may invite high alternates later in the season. These occurrences are quite rare but do happen. Otherwise the waitlist term refers to students who interviewed and were not offered acceptance at a university -but- pending the outcome of the top choice student and where they accept, may get off the waitlist into the program.
  22. I ended up being transparent with all 3 programs.two have identified alternate dates but still waiting on the third. Im an awful liar so I went with the honest route and the PIs were flexible and understanding.
