  1. Thanks! Are there any things you hoped someone else would have told you before you moved to Btown? I don't even know if it's possible to walk in the snow and how much heat costs
  2. I'm from LA!. What about you? I have not seen snow for years and really don't know how to prepare for the cold
  3. Hi, I am from CA too! Also a bit worried about the move (the weather in particular) MeadowCreek has amazing reviews, but a bit far from the campus. Are you planning on driving?
  4. Hi everyone, Congrats to everybody who has been admitted to IU! I just decided to come to IU in Fall 2016 for Psychology PhD. I am from LA and looking for a roommate to move in this August (early Augst). My orientation starts on August 7. I haven't secured a place yet, but I'm going to start looking for an apt soon. I will be moving to Bloomington for grad school and would prefer roommates who also are graduate students or working as professionals. Pets-free and smoke-free. I do not have a car, and thus would prefer to live close to campus in a quiet neighbourhood. However, I'd also be willing to live 10-15 mins walking distance away from campus to lower the cost of rent. I was wondering if anyone is also looking for roommate(s) to share a house or apartment
  5. I agree with what has been said. I think reapply next year while you have already had a fully funded package in hand is quite risky. The way I think about is that there might be some applicants who share the same mentality as you have and want to boost their CV in order to aim for better programs. So next year when you apply again, you might well compete with all those folks who have improved their CVs. If you are seriously considering reapplying, I would suggest asking POIs for some advice on how to improve your applications (especially from those who cannot offer you admission this cycle). If they do not mention about publications and/or presentations, maybe having more publications would not necessarily boost your application that much. If they mention something you thnk you can definitely improve within a year and thus become even more competitive, you may want to give it a try. That improvement, along with your upcoming publications, should help I think. Meanwhile, I very much agree with what ihatechoosingusernames said. Unless there's something you absolutely cannot withstand in the program(s) that always admitted you, I would reconsider reapplying. After all, it is you PhD and as long as you have self-motivation, you should have great control over your own intellectual inquiry.
  6. I feel you. It could be possible that the university wants to make their decisions until every invited applicant finishes their interview. Some people might have scheduling conflicts and would not be able to attend interviews until as late as March. I understand how hard waiting is (I myself check email every 5 seconds), but since we've already waited for several months, please have hopes and be patient for the last month or so
  7. Congrats to gradcafers who got into Stanford! Would you mind PMing me? Thanks a lot
  8. My suggestion is that you can probably pick faculty who you may potentially want to collaborate with if you are attending the program or if they have recently published any work you find interesting and want to express your interests? you can also share your personal experience that relates to their research interests, which may lead to interesting discussions! For example, given that you are applying for linguistics, maybe something like difficulties you've encountered and saw others encounter while learning languages and share your experience overcoming these difficulties? (Sorry for not being familiar with your field if this is not a good example) On the other, I think they understand that they are not your primary so they don't really expect you to know very much about their work. Common questions they may ask might include your previous research experience, why their program, and what do you hope to do as a grad and post-grad. I think a rule-of-thumb when talking to faculty other than your POI(s) is to show your genuine interests in the program and that you are ready to be a grad student! Hope it helps!
  9. I found this article online while I was trying to figure out what questions I should ask graduate students and what things I should pay attention to during program visits. I think it's pretty helpful: https://tenureshewrote.wordpress.com/2015/02/16/prospective-students-and-lab-culture/
  10. Thanks a lot and hope your applications are going well!
  11. Hi all, I am completing some forms in order to get reimbursed for my visits to programs. Some forms asked for SSN and I was wondering if I should provide my number. Thanks in advance
  12. Thank you all! I wrote to the professor again (because the worst case is rejection) and surprisingly she wrote me back and said she somehow missed my email and looked forward to meeting me on their visiting weekend! So I guess resending an email to express you interests again may not be a bad idea if you are prepared for rejection.
  13. Hi all, 2 weeks ago a professor contacted me and asked whether I'm interested in her lab. I replied yes and also expressed my interest in talking to her. However, it has been around 2 weeks and I have not heard from her. In this case, I wonder if I should send her a follow-up message and to remind her again that I am interested in her lab just in case my previous reply got lost in the shuffle or should I take it as a "NO?" Thanks!
  14. Congrats to everyone who has already received interview invites! I wonder what's the likelihood of being accepted to the program if being invited to its visiting weekend? I would really appreciate any advice on how should I prepare for the visiting weekend. Also, I wonder how do you usually deal with scheduling conflicts (i.e., two interviews at the same time, midterm, etc)?
