They rejected me even though my mile PR is 6:02. Interesting. I guess I really did need to go sub-6.

I would be on board if everybody switched to a system wherein all you received was a very large picture of either a thumbs up (everything in the picture being green) or a thumbs down (ditto, but red).

    Right after it...
To to poster below, it's refreshing to know Harvard rejected a racist like you. ...coming from another person who was accepted to the same program. Mmmm, karma.

I'm a black, trans, queer, low SES, non-Christian woman. I literally hit every diversity marker out there!  Trust me, y'all don't wanna deal with what I go through to claim affirmative action.
I'd say FU to anyone who calls me a token diversity. I work my ass off and am damned good at what I do. Even in the off-chance I was chosen because I'm a minority, let me revel in that small slice of victory. You (whatever majority is downplaying me) have the whole privilege pie to eat.

Except that it isn't the mission of public universities to "educate all students… regardless of how ignorant an applicant is," and no one is "entitled to an education at a public university" in the United States. San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez established that there is no fundamental right to even a primary education, much less a college one, under the US constitution. Many state constitutions guarantee education to children (usually through the twelfth grade) as a right, and the Supreme Court has recognized since Meyer that students have a right to that (again, primary and secondary, not college) education unimpeded by certain state actions. State institutions of higher education are still bound by the fourteenth amendment, in that if a state is going to offer public college education it must do so equally among those students it educates (this is why, for example the use of affirmative action in college admissions is a matter of constitutional law).  But that jurisprudence has never held that public universities must accept all applicants, which is the only schema under which a process that admits some applicants but not others on the basis of merit (i.e. by rejecting "ignorant" applicants, to use your language) would be a constitutional issue. That there isn't any sort of "right" to postsecondary (i.e. university education) can be most clearly seen in the fact that students at state schools, even land-grant ones, still need to pay tuition.
Again: no one is entitled to an education at a public university, which means that in admitting students those universities are free to use academic merit and the fit of a prospective student's proposed research within the department--which is what a writing sample or interview is intended to measure--as a discrimen in admissions. It is true that they may not consider status as certain protected classes in their decisions (they can't, for example, categorically deny admission to an applicant solely because she's a woman), but that's an equal protection issue, not a first amendment one.

Euler reacted to TakeruK in Free Speech at interview for graduate school applicants
I don't think interviews are a violation of free speech rights. An applicant's free speech rights are not violated if they are denied a position based on what they say. Freedom of speech is not the same as freedom of all repercussions of said speech.
I do agree with you that universities shouldn't reject/admit someone because of things related to freedom of speech like agreeing with certain political views, religious beliefs, or other opinions. However, this is not what reasonable people mean when they say graduate admissions are looking for a "good fit". When we say "good fit", we usually mean "fit" in terms of things that are relevant to the work. For example, will the school's resources and the applicant's goals match up? It doesn't make sense to admit a student who wants to use telescope data to a school that has no telescope data.
It may be the case that some schools are using the guise of "good fit" to discriminate against applicants for their opinions/beliefs/etc. not relevant to their work. This would be very bad. There are laws against hiring discrimination (doesn't matter whether the money is federally sourced or not) that are meant to protect employees and these laws restrict the types of questions that could be asked in an interview. I know that grad student applicants aren't necessary in the same category as employees and may not always be fully protected by these laws, but there are mechanisms that are there to try to prevent schools from doing this.
((In this discussion, I am assuming you are worried about interviews being used to unfairly reject candidates for non-relevant reasons such as political or religious beliefs. If this is not what you mean, would you mind clarifying?))

Euler got a reaction from stats_monte in Are there "cash cow" programs in Statistics?
If you're looking at fully established universities for a graduate degree in statistics, you should be totally fine.
The cash cows people tend to look down upon are things like Phoenix, definitely the best-known one, where the degree is not highly respected in a lot of fields. Granted, my brother got a master's in public health online through there and it's served him very well, so even things like that are situationally valuable.
I've also received a ton of emails from programs that don't seem well established, since I'm in math. Things like business analytics, data management, and some statistics-related fields. But the vast majority were from small schools I've never heard of, who tried to sell themselves to me with promises of things like a "free" laptop or no charge on applications. Those would probably fit in the cash cow category in my opinion.
If you're looking to go to grad school for statistics, I'd check this site for rankings: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-science-schools/statistics-rankings/page+4  Anything on there will certainly be acceptable, but the farther you go, the more important the prestige of the university and advisor you work with becomes. That list most likely isn't exhaustive, but I'm in math that isn't statistics so I don't know where to point you for a complete list. What you should be looking out for is receiving a fully funded offer- that means tuition should be covered, and you should also receive a stipend to live on (very meagerly) while in school. In STEM fields, statistics definitely included, anything less than a funded offer is questionable- receiving funding should be a top priority.
Finally, if you're hoping to study this fall and you haven't put in applications already, you are likely too late, and almost certainly too late if you want funding. Most applications go out in December or early January for programs beginning the following fall. Some programs out there have really late deadlines, but those generally also have rolling admissions and by this point are probably going to be full. If this is the case, definitely email the department to see if there's still opportunity to put in an application, and whether it's worth doing so.
Sorry for such a long post for your relatively simple question- there's tons of information around this site if you do some digging, and if you have any more questions I can try to answer them.

I basically asked in mine whether there was anything they were missing from me, and whether I should expect a decision soon. I put the burden as heavily on myself as I could, to not sound pushy.
It's definitely an awkward email to send!

Yeah, every time I apply for something and say "I probably won't get it" my parents just say "you say that about a lot of things that you get!" Like, NO MOM. NINE HUNDRED PEOPLE APPLIED TO THIS GRADUATE PROGRAM. THEY PICK 20.

It's definitely acceptable at this point to email them if you haven't heard anything back. No peep at all could be a waist list as well- NC state told me I had about a 50/50 shot of whether I'll get a funded offer, but only after I sent an email asking about my application status.
Of course, five other schools also didn't even reply to my emails...I guess there's only so much you can do. And yeah, the lack of any response this late sucks with how much applications cost!
