I also feel like, as academics, we can all relate to Chidi. -

My sister has been begging me to watch The Good Place since it came on. I started watching it yesterday and have since rolled through season 1 LOL Such a good show- and anyone else looking for a distraction should check it out! Season 1 is on Netflix! -
Dude, same! I'm like nothing can happen if i don't finish this. I guess the lack of an acceptance has me.... unmotivated right now. I need to just get working.

Of course! What else what would I be doing? Cleaning my house? Working on my thesis? Something productive? No! I have to worry and obsessively check statuses that are not going to change on Saturday night!

I remember wanting to tell my undergraduate professors I wanted to go to graduate school and being absolutely terrified they’d tell me I wasn’t qualified or cut out for it and didn’t have any good ideas. I mentioned this fear to one of my professors and she was like, “We all had to do this too. Every person in this department had to apply to graduate school, we didn’t just end up here.” Which really put things into perspective for me because in my mind the people I worked with were all brilliant and had just landed jobs and degrees because they were just so intelligent. Looking back on it, definitely a silly thought, but it just goes to show how the process is pretty obscured.

I also think it’s a little rude (if not unethical) to say “we have fee waivers available” but not outline the process for getting them. Asking about money is so hard and awkward, and no applicant wants to out themselves as not being able to afford the fee. What if that factors into the decision? and etc.

Dude, I’m there with you. In the last 24 hours I’ve given myself a second degree burn and twisted my ankle. -

My boyfriend sent me a picture of a Purdue license plate he saw while he was driving. Maybe it's a sign -
Yeah- this bothers me too. I realize that most probably have zero say in application fees, but.... they're certainly in a better position than us, as potential applicants. I think it's really frustrating- especially in rhet/comp- because we have so many people studying accessibility and wanting to change things but when it comes to it, it feels like nobody is.

And you can't sit certain ways (legs crossed or folded in anyway), can't take your shoes off, and if your ID moves from the little place holder.... OH NO! YOU'RE NOT WHO YOU SAY YOU ARE. My mom had to take a professional test for her job, not administered through ETS or anything, but they wouldn't let her wear her hair barrette. She was so frazzled when they told her to take it out, luckily I had an extra hair tie

I agree with you here. There would be more applications for sure, but I can’t imagine it being to the point where departments can’t manage. Texas Tech let me do this, but I specifically asked them. I wonder if other schools would be open to it if we asked. Certainly I wouldn’t lie about my average scores LOL

I really don’t think that would be the case. Applications are already laborious enough.

Also, application fees in general. What purpose do they serve? Why do I need to pay a many times outrageous fee for you to look at my application? Imagine all the brilliant people who are kept out of grad school because they can’t afford the fee.

+1 for this. I specifically asked every school I applied to about this (because I had a lot of dual enrollment credits from high school), and they all said it was okay if I didn't turn them in. I got an email from a school about needing better transcripts because they didn't have these CC credits... They're so old! They don't even count towards my GPA!

Having a rejection doesn't make the waiting any less droning on and on... believe me, I know!

Got an email from WSU that my application is complete and they hope to have decisions by late Feb-mid April.... oh my this waiting is driving me insane.

Doesn't do grades? That's interesting. Is everything just pass/fail? Are you interested in studying that system of evaluation long term?

We only read parts of it, but watched the whole movie! I should go back and reread the entire book. I absolutely love Rebecca Solnit!
