  1. Attending Boston College =D
  2. I'm still deciding between UMD and Boston College, but I went to American University for undergrad and I've lived in DC for six years. Anyone please feel free to message me if you need advice about housing, transportation, moving companies, etc.
  3. I'm still deciding between UMD and Boston College, but I've lived in DC for the past six years and I went to American University for undergrad. Let me know if I can help in any way with housing, transportation questions, moving companies, etc.
  4. Mostly aid. But I'm getting red flags from how big grad admissions were from last year. They admitted 53 history PhDs and 29 MAs. If that's the same every year... And they don't guarantee funding for even PhDs for history, so I'm worried the environment will be cutthroat and unsupportive. Meanwhile, Boston College admitted 10 PhDs last year and 6 MAs. I haven't made up my mind yet, but I'm just getting red flags from UMD. Which, I mean, the three professors I'd be working closest with there are exactly what I do, if melded into one person. There are so many factors, I just have to decide. And the professor at UMD who would be my adviser put me in touch with another MA student of hers, so I'll talk to that student about the department culture. And thanks for understanding, and then welcoming me despite my mistake =).
  5. Admitted to UMD for an MA. I have to decide between UMD and Boston College. At least it's not quite as stressful as when I was waiting to hear. I'm so sorry, I just saw this was under speech pathology. I'm brand new to this forum, still working out the kinks. I apologize!
  6. Hi! Welcome to the US. There's not much that I can offer, but I can confirm your thoughts on Seattle. The temperatures are generally pretty temperate, in my opinion. But I lived in Sweden, so I don't know how much stock you'll put in that. It's definitely quite rainy, like England. But it's a pretty environmentally friendly city. I don't think we have anywhere like cities in Europe where SO many people bike, but biking is relatively big in Seattle. Good luck! I'm sorry, I know that wasn't extremely helpful.
  7. Thanks for your advice! I really appreciate your help. I'm such an anxious person that even when I know something like a forum is an impractical way to get my answers, I'm like FEELERS EVERYWHERE. And literally, when I'm not finishing professional contracts, my baby is a Star Wars sociopolitical fanfiction about institutional failure where my main character is a cultural anthropologist. That's the type of person I am.
  8. Oh, I'm sorry! To clarify, I went to American University in DC for undergrad. I've visited both UMD and BC. I only applied to schools with professors in my field who were accepting new students, and I've sent emails to those professors already, asking to speak with some of their current grad students. I'm still waiting on financial aid and funding information, so that's not yet in the equation. I know culture isn't and can't be the only factor in the decision, but I'm asking what the culture is like, because I'm already working on the other factors. I thought it was worth seeing if there were grad students at either school here who had insight to share.
  9. Hi! This is actually my first post on this forum, so. Sorry if I'm awkward or something. But my name is Hayley. I graduated from a DC school with a degree in history. I'm an early North Americanist, and my thesis was on the commutation (or not) of execution sentences for pregnant women convicted of witchcraft. My favorite thing in the entire world is Star Wars, and I'm a writer for Onyx Path Publishing. I've been admitted to BC and UMD--College Park for an MA. My undergraduate adviser, for whom I also TAd, got her PhD at BC, and I've emailed her for guidance, but I wondered if current students or other applicants had anything they could share for me to help make my decision. Does anyone know how the departments operate at these schools? Are there any lingering animosities or department battles I should be aware of or consider?
