  1. Hey everyone! I'm a current MA CSE student. I will be there on Jan 27 to help calm any nerves pre-interview! There will be several of my classmates there as well, so if you have any questions, ask us tomorrow (Or Feb 3, the other interview day)! Just relax, be confident, and be yourself! This program is really chill and we're all like a family - no need for uptight formalities!
  2. The MA CSE program at OISE certifies you as an elementary school teacher! I like the idea of trying to pursue an MSW part-time, or even a BSW part-time! I know the job market is scarce for teachers at the moment, but I think I'll be willing to struggle for a couple of years to get the end goal. Thank you for your thoughts! I am planning on sticking with the teaching degree, so hopefully one of the 2017 MSW waitlisters will get a call soon!
  3. Hey everyone! I am doing the M.A. CSE program at OISE starting September, so I'll be certified to teach K-6 by the end of the program. Anyone know anything about upgrading qualifications to teach 7-12? I love children and teaching younger children, which is why I chose this program, but it would be nice to know if I could ever have the choice to teach other grades. Thank you!
  4. Got a call about my acceptance to UofT's 2 year MSW program. However, I accepted OISE's M.A. in Child Studies and Education program a couple months back. I was given the option to override that acceptance and put my deposit towards the MSW program. But I'm really confused! My original goal was hospital social work (only kind I want to do), but teaching has always been dear to my heart. Any insight or suggestions would be helpful!
  5. Is there a Facebook group for us MA CSE students? Would love to get to know people before the program starts
  6. I'll be accepting my MA CSE offer and rejecting my MT offer, so hopefully someone waitlisted gets their offer soon!
  7. I asked around and 99% of people say to do the MA CSE program (if you've been accepted to both). Apparently much more organized, helpful in the future, more well-respected, and overall just a better program. A friend from high school is currently in the program and she said her classmates enjoy their program much more than the MT students.
  8. For anyone who got into both the MA Child Education and MT, which one are you going to pick?
  9. I got my acceptance today, and I live in Mississauga. Good luck to everyone still waiting!
  10. To those who applied for both the MA in child study and the MT, which are you going to choose? I have no idea what the difference is and whether one is worth pursuing over the other. Any insight is appreciated!
  11. My MA Child Study and Education one says financially cancelled and my MT one says invited... fingers crossed they both mean I'm in!
  12. Have an interview on Jan 28th, have no idea what kind of questions they're going to ask. For those waiting for an email back, it said that there are two interviewers and it is going to be half an hour long.
  13. me too! hope "by december 15th" means before 11:59PM on december 15th!
  14. it has a password for some reason, which i don't know. but thank you!
  15. UofT applicants! Is anyone having trouble checking these boxes? I tried everything but just can't get them to check!
  16. Hey! How much formal research experience did you have when you applied, if you don't mind me asking?
  17. Hi everyone! It's my second time applying to an MSW program (UofT last year - waitlisted). I'm applying to only UofT's program again this year for an MSW, but I also applied for a post-grad BSW at McMaster (my undergrad school) and three programs within UofT's OISE. I have an Hons B.A. and double-majored in Health and Sociology. My GPA in my last 2 years at McMaster is a 4.0 (according to UofT's GPA scale). I got an A in both Statistics and Research Methods. I did not complete a thesis (big mistake on my part, since I have no other real research experience). My most relevant social work experiences are volunteering at a women's transitional home as a shelter support worker/case worker, both (paid) worked and volunteered at a non-profit that connects Canadians in need with government resources such as ODSP and OW (was able to work with Syrian refugees as well), a non-profit that I co-founded that delivers food/toiletries/clothes/information pamphlets to homeless individuals and teen shelters in Toronto, soup kitchens, and food basket builds. Other experiences that are sort of relevant are: mentor at McMaster for first year students who are struggling with university life, a literacy tutor at an elementary school in a lower-privileged part of Hamilton, and a companion volunteer at a long-term care home. All of these experiences combined equal to 995 hours in the past three years. My references were the House Operator at the transitional home, my professor of 5 classes at McMaster, and the supervising teacher at the elementary school. I hope that this year will be better for me and that the new addition of volunteering at a transitional home on my resume boosts my chances. Best of luck to you all!
  18. I think it's pretty important. I'm in the exact same boat as you: no fourth year thesis, no research assistant experience, and an A in research methods. That's why I'm pretty sure I was waitlisted instead of accepted.
  19. Received my wait list letter to UofT's 2 year MSW program. It was the only one I applied to, so I'm pretty much hoping for the best at this point. I've applied to a few jobs (school guidance counsellor, teacher's assistant for differently-abled children, and research assistant with SickKids and Hamilton Health Sciences). Hoping that I get one of these so I don't end up doing nothing for a year. Also considering getting certified as an English teacher abroad (2 month online program at UofT OISE). Guess it'd be cool to spend a gap year living in another country teaching! Best of luck to everyone on the wait list!
  20. Hey! I'm not 100% sure how the collaborative programs work, but my sister applied for the MSW/JD one at UofT 7 years ago and was assessed on both together (she was rejected from both and was given one letter). This is why I assume that they take both into consideration when accepting; however, I am not sure if this is still the case today! Best of luck!
  21. Congrats to everyone who got in! Must be such an amazing feeling. I only applied to UofT's 2 year MSW program (not in yet). I only want to do clinical social work, and I know UofT and UBC offer the 2 year programs for it. Anyone know of any other universities that have this program without requiring a BSW? Also, I think I might not get in to UofT this year because I have about 3 years of relevant experience, and I feel as though everyone else had a lot more. Anyone have any pointers on paid work in social services I can do in my gap year (with a B.A.) to gain experience? Thanks!
