  1. Hi! I was wondering who students typically list as their "points of contact in their country of residence" in the F1 visa application. Can they list their neighbors/college friends, for example?
  2. Thank you for your replies. I'll definitely email my POIs to let them know I'll be coming.
  3. Hi So I've accepted an offer from a graduate school online and am now wondering whether there are some additional steps I need to take to officially accept the offer (e.g. mail the school a signed acknowledgement of acceptance). Where I come from, the process of accepting grad school offers is somewhat more complicated and usually involves quite a lot of hard copy documentation. Is simply clicking the Accept button enough?
  4. Hi I've recently received a fully funded PhD offer from University A, which is (for now) my top choice. I also have an on-campus interview scheduled for mid March in University B, which I'd really like to attend before making my final decision. The program at University A is very small, and their website explicitly states that they aim to admit a maximum of two people in the program each year. However, I've learnt that they sent out five offers this year. Now, I'm aware that programs typically send out more offers than they have spots. I'm also aware of the April deadline, until which we're free to accept or decline offers. My question is the following: what will happen if, say, two or three people accept their offer sooner that me? Will the university rescind the offer of admission and/or funding, given that all the spots are filled? Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I'm an international student, unversed in American academic culture. In my country, it's not uncommon to admit students on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  5. The program I'm applying to requires a writing sample of no more than 2000 words. However, the graduate website says that longer pieces are acceptable as long as a section of 2000 words is clearly highlighted. I'd like to go with the latter option - I have a 7000-word paper that I consider to be my strongest work. But I'm wondering what is the acceptable way to set apart an extract of the required length. Should it be in bold, or should I use a different font? Or would it be better simply to submit an extract with a cover note, rather than submit a longer work in its entirety? I'd be grateful for any advice!
  6. Hi I'm now in the process of submitting my application and, naturally, I'm submitting all the transcripts from all the universities that I've ever attended - including the one from a semester -long exchange program abroad with an F in one of the courses. This grade does not count towards my GPA, nor will it appear on my final official transcript. My GPA is 4.0 and I'm expected to graduate summa cum laude. My question is the following: should I disclose this grade once again when asked on the application: "Have you ever received a failing grade, been placed on academic probation, been part of an academic hearing or been dismissed from any school?" The phrasing makes me uneasy, as it makes a failing grade look tantamount to serious academic misconduct.I'm worried that if I answer "yes", my application will be automatically flagged and my chances of admission will be ruined. Do you think I should still answer "yes", even if this grade appears on my transcript and my recommender agreed to explain it in his letter?
  7. Hi while creating my GRE account, I accidentally added a middle initial, even though I don't have one. I contacted the support, and the representative told me that neither he can change the initial, nor can I create another account. In short, that nothing can be done to fix the situation. Is this actually true? Have any of you been in a situation like this? I'm now afraid that the universities won't be able to match my scores with the application.
