  1. So the programs I'm applying to have the main CSU Mentor application and a separate application for the school I just need help with a few things 1) On the grad school application on CSU Mentor on page A7, section H and again on page B2 it asks for me to list all courses I am in, and all courses I plan to take. It only gives like 5 spaces to do this and says please attach additional pages if needed. This is an online application, I don't want to have to mail it in just because I need extra space. Is there a common solution to this? 2) I'm applying to grad school as a senior with a year to go, do they want me to list my courses that I'm taking for the next year? 3) For GPA on the CSU Mentor application on B 2, it asks for "estimated overall GPA" for various institutions you attended. Well does that mean your CSU transferable only GPA, or is that all classes even if they don't transfer? 4) I am a transfer student, some of the applications ask for the last 60 semester units or 90 quarter. At the time of application I will be half way through my second set of 90 units, my upper division. If I just go back exactly 90 units that puts me at half way through community college, so that is where I start counting from, really? 5) What about academic renewal, do I count classes that I applied academic renewal to? 6) Finally, on the separate application for the school, it asks for my cumulative GPA from all institutions. It gives no further direction. I emailed them and they basically restated that it's for all institutions and gave nothing further. Does that mean CSU transferable courses only, does it mean all courses ever, does it include the classes I used academic renewal for? Thank you, your help is greatly appreciated, and I wish these applications were more specific. Attached are the pages I was talking about from CSU Mentor A7 and B2, and the cumulative GPA question from one of the applications to the school itself.
  2. For those who got in and those who did not, would you please let us know your stats so we have an idea what they are accepting? This is helpful for future applicants using the site. Wish you luck at your other schools you applied to, honestly you see totally qualified applicants who don't get in, and some who you wouldn't expect to, who knows why. I do think you will get into a school, and that it will be a better fit and perhaps all this will be for the best. To those who got in, congratulations. When you applied, how did you record your GPA? I'm a transfer student from a CC to a UC.
  3. Hey to anyone who applied to CSULB, on their application it asks for your cumulative GPA. So for me this is a little tricky because I am a transfer student. I returned to school after a long break, and when I first went to school I had bad grades in community college. I came back and have had a 4.0 since returning, and we'll see if it's still there when I apply for the MSW programs this fall. When they ask for my cumulative GPA, do I just give them my GPA from the UC I transferred to, or do I combine my UC GPA and my GPA from the 3 community colleges I attended? If I have to include those OLD grades and it lowers my GPA that is going to suck.
  4. For those of you who were accepted, congratulations. Could you please share your stats with the rest of us in terms of GPA and experience, or any other pertinent info you think helped you stand out?
  5. What programs do you suggest
  6. I will be in a similar boat. Did you interview with them?
  7. One thing to keep in mind is that you cannot apply to both the 2 year and 3 year part time MSW programs at the same time at all schools. CSUF only lets you apply for 1 whereas CSULB lets you favor one over the other. The other thing I learned was about financial aid. Some of us being full time students may qualify for a large amount at our respective undergrad schools, however graduate school financial aid is different. For CSUF for example, the full time MSW program on the main campus does allow students to apply for financial aid, it can cover the cost of tuition, potentially in full so long as you earn less than around $25,000 a year I think. The MSW program costs about $13k for the full 2 year program. The MSW FLEX program is at CSUF Irvine and is not elligible for financial aid, it is $25k for the 3 year program. Anyways Graduate Cost of Attendance CSUF.docx Financial_Aid_MSWFlex.pdf
  8. Well as an LCSW in California, you can have a private practice, and the going rate for a therapy session with a masters level clinician who is licensed is about $100- $125 an hour in this area, and indeed this is a pretty well to do area. If you add it up, 25 clients a week is about $2500 dollars so $10,000 a month and $120,000 a year before taxes and business costs. That's optimal though, and there are many unforseen costs, and the fact that insurance wont always cover the full price of a session or limit them. It's still pretty good money though if you are good at what you do and can handle the workload. I think with an MSW working for a county agency or something you would make around $50k here in California, working for a drug and alcohol treatment center probably about 45-50k. It all depends on where you work, and while in some places you earn far less, the cost of living in those areas is far less too. Someone correct me if I am wrong, this is just what I have gathered over time.
  9. They do rolling admissions for CSULB. I went to CSUFs info sesh the other night as well. So far the only news I've gotten is that we can only apply to 1 grad program per school at the same time, and for CSUF u have to pick the part time or full time program when you apply, you can't apply for both. Anyone have any news?
  10. I went to the info sesh for CSULB... I'll attach my notes in a follow up post, but as the above post said you don't fill out that reference form, that's for the referrant to fill out and send in in an envelope they seal and signtheir name across the back. They suggested u get a professional referrance and a school reference, ideally someone who supervised you and knows how your work ties into social work.
  11. Cool people are using this thread.. I'm an undergrad still, a junior, and I'm double majoring in psych and crim. I'm also working on a substance abuse counseling certification. I apply next fall, I'm trying to get ahead of this so I don't have any surprises. I'm going to have about a year and a half of experience in addiction treatment and counseling at time of application, would be about 2.5 years at time of enrollment if accepted. I hope it works. I'm going to the info session coming up soon if anyone else is going lets get a coffee while we are on campus or something.
  12. Those applying for Masters degree programs for MFT Marriage and Family Therapy in the CSU system, whichever school, please update your progress in this thread. If we work together and support eachother we each stand a greater chance of admission to the CSU of choice. Please indicate your stats when pertinent.
  13. Those going through the application process for the California State University graduate programs at whatever campus, this is a place to share progress and ask questions. If we work together and support eachother we each stand a greater chance of success in admission to the CSU of choice. Please include your stats when pertinent.
  14. I'll be applying to CSUs for MSW (mental health) and MFT (counseling psych) programs. If you only had time for either research or working in a related field gaining experience ... Which would you choose or believe to be most important? Also if you care to share How much experience or research you think is reasonable that would be helpful. Thanks!
  15. Both of you sound like great applicants to me. I'm 33 and am hoping to get school done without delay so I can start a career and begin putting some money away. I just transfered from a CC with a 4.0 as a psychology major, and now I'm majoring in psychology and social behavior at UC Irvine. I'm in the alcohol and other drugsAOD program at my CC still while also going to UCI. I'm also starting work again as support staff at an AOD treatment center that specializes with co occurring disorders. I'm in recovery as well, little over 2 years now, so hopefully my age and life experience will help and not hinder me. When I apply I'm going to have 1.5 years working at an AOD facility, an internship done as well, almost a degree in AOD which would allow me to be a counselor, and hopefully good grades at UCI. Im a late bloomer... Wish I had more experience, I hope it works out because I know I'm ready for it. Let's keep this thread alive and help eachother be successful.
  16. Hey so I'm wanting an LCSW eventually, but what track would work? Only a few are clinical based that I've seen... Also anyone who got in want to share stats and tips with an undergrad?
  17. Thanks a ton for sharing your insight. I'm looking for MSW programs with a more clinical track and have only found like 2. Can someone get an MSW in community mental health and become an LCSW?
  18. What do you suggest to a hopeful applicant with a few years to go?
  19. Hello, My name is Greg and I'm currently an undergrad at UC Irvine working towards a BA in Psychology and Social Behavior. I'm an older student, 33 years old and am taking my life in a new direction, inspired by numerous things to do so including that I'm a recovering alcoholic. I'm also going to school at a community college that I transferred from working on a second AA in an Alcohol and Drug Studies program so that I can work as a counselor part time while going to school, and to gain experience. Mental health and substance abuse are the areas that most interest me and I wish to devote a good portion of my work in the future in those arenas. So that's a little about me and where I am at now, and I could really use some advice, and just some input on my options for the future and how to best be prepared for it. I'm looking at schools in the Los Angeles/Orange County area where I can pursue a graduate degree, and hopefully for as low a cost as possible. I'm having a hard time settling on what go for in grad school be it a MSW, a PsyD or maybe a PhD. I have no interest in teaching, and I don't have much experience with research yet but it doesn't sound like something I want to spend any more time doing than I need to. I will of course research and participate in continuing my education in the future as is needed or for personal interest, but I don't want a career based around it. The only reason I'm considering a PhD is that UCs are great schools and lower in cost, offer assistance and sometimes a stipend. A PsyD is probably more down my alley, but the only schools that offer those degrees are private and tend to be very costly. Psychology as a subject to study overall has been soo interesting and I love the subject matter, and learning about how to conduct therapy based on various theories and methods is very intriguing to me. So my concern is that I may miss out on some of this if I go for the MSW. The MSW is offered at more schools that are low cost, like UCs and CSUs, however it's a slightly different set of skills from what I understand. What I like about the MSW is flexibility in what I can do with it, and that I could work in private practice or a clinical setting as soon as I'm licensed or in California what is known as an LCSW. Originally I was looking at LMFT because I had worked with them at a treatment center I worked at, I really liked the work they did, however I understand that LCSWs are hired for the same thing as being a therapist for clients. I have no interest in working with couples, it's not why I'm doing all this and it just doesn't really illicit a sense of purpose for me. So, I like the MSW option, the flexibility, possibly lower cost, and slightly higher incomes that are reported with that degree. About incomes, this isn't all about money for me at all, however since I'm an older person who is basically just starting working where I'm earning any kind of substantial income for the first time in his life, I wont have as much time to accrue retirement savings etc that I would have had if I had gotten sober at say 22 years old. So I know that as a licensed psychologist I could make a pretty substantial income in my area of California, and this would put me back into the focus of my education being in psychology. I'm wondering how hard it is to get into a public grad school in my area for a clinical psychology PsyD or PhD, just what is really expected? It's one thing what they put on the website for requirements, it's another what a competitive applicant who gets accepted has going on. Same for the MSW programs, I need to know what I should be doing to be an optimal applicant for these schools so that I can get in. I'd like to be prepared so that I could apply to at least PsyD and MSW programs so that I have as many options at the end as possible. Are there any private grad schools I should be looking at that you recommend which are affordable for PsyD programs ? I've got my eye on a few including Alliant What do you guys know about the MSW programs at UCLA, CSULB, CSUF, CSULA or PhD programs in clinical psychology at UCLA, UCR, or maybe schools I have not mentioned ? What do you think you would pursue, the MSW or the PsyD, would you go for a PhD ? I know this one really is up to the individual and we are all different, but just want your opinions on the career outlook and just your thoughts in general about what you consider the best option. Thank you !
  20. Hi, I'm not a Grad student and am still finishing my BA in psych, but since no one is replying I'd like to just give an outside perspective uneducated opinion. I think your GPA is amazing, you should be soo proud. I don't know what kind of ECs or experience is the baseline for these schools so don't know where you stand. As for your personal statements, I discussed my overcoming alcoholism and getting sober in my applications to UC undergrad and I think it helped. If it was me in your shoes, try to tell a story which is true that is about overcoming the odds, performing and working hard to rebound from the impact of those personal struggles. Everyone likes a story where the comeback kid makes it, how can you highlight your own journey to present it that way. Not sure if that's the right thing to do or not, just a thought. I wish you luck with getting in, and based on what you say about GPA you are top notch at least in academic performance terms. The cost of applying might be painful when it's multiple schools, but I feel it's worth it. If it was me I would be applying to all the UCs and CSUs I was interested in, max out your chances.
  21. This thread is for hopeful applicants wishing for admission into UCLAs MSW program for Fall 2017 or Fall 2018. Please provide your stats, update progress, and be supportive.
  22. Anyone here anymore?
  23. I'm wondering what the low end or average GPA being accepted into the MSW program is for UCLA. I'm going to apply in the future, I'm researching what to expect, how I can optimize my chances. Now I'll aim to get straight As, and I pulled that off at the CC I just transferred from, but not sure if I'll get those same marks or not at UCI. I'm going to do my best, and I hope I do better than expected. I'm also on a very tight budget and want to do this as low cost as possible. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, and congrats to you new Bruins!
  24. Hello, I've been really busy on the college confidential site for getting accepted at my university of choice after finishing work at my community college, and thanks in large part to that community and the information we all shared with each other, I got in. So I will be starting this fall at the University of California Irvine as a Psychology and Social Behavior major. I am also pursuing a seperate AS degree in Alcohol and Drug studies, it's the curriculum needed to become a certified substance abuse counselor. My long term goal is to work as an LCSW, but really focus on conducting therapy, at least for as long as I enjoy it. I like the flexibility of the MSW route compared to going for an MFT or LPCC. Now I have been told by professors that I need to be applying for grad school in about 1 year, and if possible I want to be preparing for that over the course of this year ahead so that when it is time I'm ready. I'm looking at USC, UCLA, CSULB, and CSUF as possible schools to apply to right now, so any advice on what I should be doing to be better prepared, insight into the quality of those schools, or what is really required of an applicant to have a shot at getting in to any of those schools would be very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to help me out, and for as long as I am in the process of applying and working towards grad school I will stick around this community and try to help those who come after me.
  25. Hey would some of you mind sharing your stats ? like GPA, where you are transferring from, what you bring to the table that makes you competitive. Especially if you are admitted. I just want to know what to expect because the CSUF MSW program is on my list of schools I'd like to apply to once I'm done with my BA in psychology.
