This happened to my friend that went there even though she had an undergrad in comm disorders too. She had to start literally right after she graduated from undergrad and move there like a week later to start taking the classes, and I think she ended up having to stay in a dorm because she didn't have time to find somewhere to live!

working with on-campus clients, off-campus
JcSLP replied to futureslpinca3's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I agree with everyone else, I wouldn't do this, you're not a licensed SLP or SLPA and you're able to work with the clients in the clinic because you're being supervised by a CCC-SLP. -
I haven't gotten any financial aid info/ GA/RA offers from the two schools I was accepted to yet. I emailed one and they told me that normally they don't send these out until after the April 15th deadline, but that they are ahead of schedule in the admissions process this year so they might be able to notify before the deadline. For the other school, I don't think they decide until after the deadline... It stinks because it would be helpful to know this information beforehand to make the best financial choice. I think it's different for each school.

Congratulations!! And by the way about the weather in Upstate, I can't really compare it to MA/CT because I've never been there but yeah there's a lot of snow. I currently go to school around Lake Erie and it snows... a lot... it's snowing right now actually, and last weekend it was 70 degrees. I'm originally from the Lake Ontario/Finger Lakes region, and Ithaca is at the bottom of Cayuga lake so I assume they probably get lake effect too. But the weather never really stops anyone from doing anything around here. I haven't visited the town of Ithaca but the area in general has a lot of natural beauty Editing to add that you will get the full range of seasons here and they are all so pretty in my opinion! Summers are hot but nice, falls are perfect sweater weather and beautiful. -
Same, I was really surprised when I saw people on the results board getting these huge scholarships... I didn't even know you could get scholarships for grad school haha I thought only GA/TA/RA postions

Thank you! No I actually checked today and my portal didn't change, and the date on the letter is 2/27 so it took a few days to get to me! -
@maurmaur Yes, I payed for my whole undergraduate degree (unfortunately, but I had no other choice) in loans, both federal and private. Your FAFSA automatically calculates the cost of attendance for each school, so for me I took out the max federal loans every year and covered the rest with private. In your cost of attendance that includes room/board, so when I wasn't living in a dorm/with a meal plan anymore, that money was refunded to me. That's what I used to pay my rent each semester. It really helps to just go to the federal student aid website and read in depth about all the different types of loans/grants. My plan for grad school is to hopefully get a GA/TA position in addition to most likely going to an in-state school, so I'm hoping to take out the bare minimum for loans this time around now that I understand more of the financial aspect. As a graduate student, you're automatically considered independent from your parents (you don't have to report their financial information on the fafsa) so the "expected family contribution" is essentially zero. This means you qualify for way more in federal subsidized/unsubsidized loans than as an undergraduate. Hope this helps a little!

@kenz I see in your signature you applied to Ithaca, I assume you haven't heard anything either? It's weird because I saw two and only two posts on the results page that they received acceptances to Ithaca through the mail. I haven't gotten anything in the mail and my Ithaca portal hasn't changed -

How to manage different dates of acceptance
JcSLP replied to Kate22192's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
This might be a silly question but how do you know how much the deposits are? Did the school tell you when you were accepted or was the information on their website? I was accepted to a school through email but it didn't say anything about a deposit, just the deadline to accept/decline the offer. They said I would receive an official letter from the Dean of the graduate school soon... I'm wondering if it will say in that letter. -
None of the schools I applied to require interviews but, at the graduate school fairs I've attended one thing I like to ask is when you start clinic (unless this info is on their website.) For one school I applied to, everyone starts second semester to ease them into things. Some schools have you start immediately, and for others, it's a toss up (some students start first semester, some start second.) Maybe you could also ask about what kind of teacher/graduate assistantship opportunities they offer? If you're interested in that. Good luck at your interviews!

In my undergrad classes we were given a "proficiency"-like test a few times with basic level speech path questions that everyone should know (taken from the praxis) with simple questions about fundamental frequency, laryngeal muscles, things like that. That would be my best guess unless they're legit going to give you a science test which seems odd to me

JcSLP replied to hopingtogetinsomewhere's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I totally agree. It's making me crazy! I don't think I'll hear anything until next week at the earliest but probably more mid-March. I feel like I won't even be able to open the mail/emails though because I'll be too nervous to see what they say -
It just personally wasn't somewhere I really wanted to go! I only applied to four schools and so I made sure they were schools I would really want to go to if I got in. Nothing about it intrigued or excited me (granted, I didn't do a ton of research), and it doesn't seem like a very safe campus. I've heard stories of people's application materials being lost and I didn't like the fact that you had to apply on CSDCAS and do another application on their website. That being said, I think there's a lot of people who still do like the program! I've been taught by some professors that teach there and they were really amazing.

@somnium Hi! I'm also applying to Nazareth and SUNY UB. I originally was going to apply to Buff State as well but took it off my list. I know many, many people who are still applying there now that they are accredited again. I googled Buffalo State speech-pathology probation and found this on ASHA: http://www.asha.org/uploadedFiles/Accreditation-Approval-Status-Buffalo-State-SLP.pdf About the M.S. Ed, it does not prohibit you from working in a medical setting. They still prepare you for all different types of settings. When I was looking at applying to UVA their program is M.S. Ed, but it's because their program is housed in their education college. I assume it's probably the same for Buff state.

How did you/ are you planning to pay for school??
JcSLP replied to grangeca's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Loans. I have about 70k from undergrad, and that's going to a state school. I'll be taking out loans again for grad school, but I'm hoping I get into a public school again so the cost is less than if I were to go private, and I'm hoping to pay less for cost of living than undergrad (my school made you live on campus and pay room and board the first 2 years.) There's no other way I could have paid since I'm doing it myself and I went straight out of high school. When grad school is said and done, I'll most likely have 100k+. It's a necessary evil for me... -
How many grad schools did you apply to?
JcSLP replied to SpeechLaedy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
@Maria70593 I'm glad I'm not the only person who felt that way! Originally I was excited to apply there... I mailed them in one letter of rec (when I thought you had to send them by mail), GRE scores and fafsa info.. but as the process went on I just kept finding myself more and more annoyed haha. I live over 3 hours away so I was never able to go to any open houses Good luck though! -
How many grad schools did you apply to?
JcSLP replied to SpeechLaedy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Hi! I graduated from SUNY Fredonia Mine was New Paltz. They had directions on their website about how to apply, and then when December 1st came their directions completely changed... It just seemed disorganized. Plus the address I thought I was supposed to send my transcripts to was incorrect and they were returned back to me. After that I totally didn't feel like going through the process for a school I didn't really want to go to! -
Hopes: Like pretty much everyone else, I really hope I get in somewhere! Preferably the school I paid a ton of money to apply to (University at Buffalo.) Dreams: This is hard. I think I would like all of the schools I applied to for different reasons. Nazareth college is beautiful but it's private...I'd rather pay state tuition. So maybe some kind of crazy financial aid deal where I pay next to nothing? Yeah that's my dream!! Guesses: I think if I get into only one school it'll be my alma mater. I was pretty active in the department so I think that'll help my chances. But I don't wanna jinx myself... I really have no idea how competitive my application is.

I'm planning on getting my TSSLD certificate. I'm not sure if I want to work in the schools immediately but it's required by NY if you do!

How many grad schools did you apply to?
JcSLP replied to SpeechLaedy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Hey fellow New Yorkers! I applied to 4 NY schools. I was going to apply to 5, but one of the school's application process had me super stressed out and it seemed excessive so I decided against it. 1. SUNY University at Buffalo 2. SUNY Fredonia 3. Nazareth College 4. Ithaca College I just want to hear back from them already... even though the deadlines for most of them haven't come yet -
Wow, 500 words is so short! I just wrote a 650 word one for a school though and I actually ended up liking it better than my other ones. Regarding the "unrelated" volunteer experience, I think it depends on what the experience is and how well you write about it and relate it to your skills/how it will help you in this profession. I did some unconventional things in my essay but I wanted it to be unique, and everyone I asked said that since I wrote it well, it worked. If you can write about it cohesively and it's clear in your essay why you're focusing on it, I think it's worth the risk!
