Fall 2017 Clinical Psychology Applicants
JacobW83 replied to FacelessMage's topic in Psychology Forum
Grats to whoever got the UT Austin Clinical invite! Awesome program. If you feel comfortable, would you mind PMing me your POI? -
Anxiety is gonna be part of grad school. I understand the desire to prepare as best you can for the interview, but really the interview starts the minute of the first event. Some programs take the input of grad students, some don't, but you will gain NO benefit from skipping an event. The best case scenario of skipping is that the grad students don't remember you much; the worst case is that the grad students find you withdrawn and difficult to engage with in a group setting (this is BAD for grad school). Highly recommend you go, meet people, be friendly, and try to use the event to enjoy yourself. Typically they'll say the event is totally optional, but they hold it for a reason and you want to get as much (positive) visibility as you can

I kinda had this happen. Saw an email saying "Interview Weekend 2017" and was excited to get another invite -- turns out it was just a follow-up from one of my previous invites with more info for the upcoming interview -

I'd bet money it's fake. They listed perfect scores for GPA, GRE, and GRE subject with like 10 interviews on the same day? Yeahhhokay -

I love when people flood the results page with fake results for 10 different schools.............. -

I don't think I'd do this. You can use the results search on this site to see if any have been sent; if there aren't any results here then it's likely they haven't been sent yet and it could come across as impatient/pressuring if you emailed faculty when you already know they haven't sent yet. If the program has been sending them out (according to the results here) and you want to know if there are more still to come, I'd email someone at the graduate admissions office first; I think the POIs would probably just be put-off by those inquiries -
Guess I can cross that one off as a no-go then, thanks for the info. Congrats and good luck!

Dang, you've already heard from everywhere else? I'm jealous, looks like the programs I'm waiting for are going to take another 2 weeks probably -

I don't know about most of these, but I don't believe UT Austin has sent out any Clinical (or Counseling, for those who care) invites yet. According to previous years, the Clinical program seems to invite relatively late compared to other programs; I wouldn't expect to hear from them until probably the last week of January. Counseling Psych should be a week or two prior to that. -

Unfortunately, no news is usually bad news if a wave of invites has gone out. Typically rejections don't get sent until way late, like March, after they've offered admission to the select few. You can always send an email to Admissions and ask if they've finished extending invites and they'll usually tell you if that's the case; not receiving an invite is basically 99% chance of rejection because they'll build their waitlist from the 2nd/3rd choices of those interviewed -

If the invitations were specifically from POIs then you aren't necessarily out of the game (your POI could take longer than the others to send invites, for example) but if they were mass-email invites from the Director or something then you likely won't be receiving an invitation to interview. That doesn't necessarily mean you're out 100%, but you should know that this is the most likely outcome when you miss a wave of invites. -
If you click your username at the top of the page there will be a dropdown menu; choose Account Settings and then Signature and you can put whatever info there you want

So I currently have 2 interviews (UH Counseling and A&M Clinical) and I had a small amount of contact with my POI at UH, but none with my POI at A&M. I emailed my UH POI prior to applying to make sure he was taking students and then I followed up with a quick "Thank you" after I applied; I didn't have any contact with anyone at A&M though-- I tried calling Admissions but didn't get through to anyone. I'm guessing that my tech issues (Letters of Rec going through, and some other document not appearing as Received) were just resolved without me hearing back about it. If your POI already has your materials then you might be okay, but it's odd that Admissions doesn't have them. Regardless, I don't think *my* emailing had any effect on my offers, but maybe yours will compensate for the issues.

Ouch, starting a new full time job in peak interview season and then theoretically leaving about 6 months later to start school? That'll be tough. I'm using vacation days for my interviews and I'm still worried about having enough time to take off, since interview events can often take 2-3 days of your time including travel. You likely won't have any vacation or sick time, so I'd strongly encourage you discussing it with your new boss in advance. Maybe you can work out a way to make up the hours by working longer days beforehand or working weekends; maybe they'll have some type of Leave you can use... hopefully they'll work with you! -

I agree with stereopticons, I wore a suit for the actual interview on my first round of apps and I'd say like 80% of the other male applicants did too. It's better to err on the side of overly-formal with this opportunity, rather than risk dressing too casually. For the dinners/socials it kinda depends on the context. The one I went to was super casual at a grad-student's house (no PoIs there) and everyone was dressed in typical "going to a friend's dinner party" semi-formal stuff. I'd definitely email the grad students or coordinators as the interview date approaches to check about typical expectations for those events, because some may be in more formal contexts than others -- but you also might feel uncomfortable arriving in a suit&tie when everyone else is in jeans and polos. -
Just got an interview at University of Houston's Counseling Psych program! Anybody else?

If anyone applied to A&M's Clinical Psych program, it seems they've just sent out email invites to interview on campus 1/23-1/24. -
I just got an email invitation to interview with Texas A&M's Clinical Psych program! I had a couple tech issues getting all my app materials together so I was kinda thinking I wouldn't hear anything from them at all, and especially not so early, so this is a very pleasant surprise!

I actually have no idea, but I did this as well. I emailed them a couple months ago expressing interest in their work and asking if they were accepting students. Typically the response was, "Thanks for your interest, yes I'm accepting. I'll keep an eye out for your application, let me know if you have any questions." So, although I don't expect it to improve my chances by any means, I felt like it'd be nice to write back and say that I did indeed decide to apply and to thank them for their initial response.

The applications I completed asked for a 1-2 page Statement of Purpose, which is painfully short in my opinion. In my first round of applications (2 years ago), I think I was too vague about my research interests and future; the truth was that I was interested in MANY things, but in the end it came across sounding unfocused and a little desperate. This year I put much more emphasis on what I wanted to do and why, and I think my SoP came out much better because of it. Since the page limit was rather small, I didn't go into meticulous detail; however, I did basically say: "I am very interested in Dr. X's research on ___ and ___, which overlaps with my interest in ___. If given the opportunity, I would love to do a research study the effect of ___ within this population. This study would build off Dr. X's research, such as her articles "ARTICLE 1" and "ARTICLE 2" which discussed ___. I believe my interests and passion for ___ would complement her research in this area..." Hopefully it turns out to be what they're looking for :x

Mine are mostly related to depression/anxiety/suicidality during development in child & adolescent populations, but also the same issues within the (youth) LGBT community -

Which schools are those, if you don't mind me asking? I kinda thought most/all programs would wait until early January to review apps and send interview invitations
