  1. For what it's worth, a 1st-year grad student at the program where I just interviewed said he did a Skype-only interview and "everything went wrong" (internet issues, dog barking in the background, etc) and he still got the offer. So it's possible!! As some other "Don't do"s... this is standard stuff, but really nail down the specifics of your interests and motivations before the interview. I was shocked to hear some applicants in my group interviews say they weren't sure this is what they wanted to do, or they really didn't know what they wanted to research... honesty is good, but don't sell yourself as the uncertain, directionless candidate.
  2. It almost looks like ClinicalPsy deleted their original account and took their posts/rating with it? The controversial comments they made are no longer visible (to me) either in this thread or on the YES!!! account. So it's possible that they deleted the account+comments and created a new one, thus the neutral rating?
  3. Also, related to footwear, this may seem like an obvious tip but sometimes people (*cough* myself *cough*) forget: if you're wearing leather dress shoes, make sure they're broken-in BEFORE interview day. I got a new pair over Christmas and never wore them until the interview event... oh my god. I still have scabs/scrapes from the blisters, and this was more than 2 weeks ago. The second day of interviews I could hardly walk, I just hobbled everywhere slowly. Break in your shoes.
  4. Did anybody interview for Texas A&M's Clinical Psych program? I haven't seen any results pop up for their admissions decisions, hoping they'll notify us soon!
  5. Like the above posters, my University also preferred that students branch out for Grad work. I have, however, heard of certain programs/universities that do give extra consideration to their own undergrads.
  6. Well in that case they're likely done, though I guess more could come for the later date. Do you mind PMing me your POI initials? Congrats on the phone interview by the way
  7. I'm still wondering about UT Austin as well. I know one person reported an interview there, but their POI's initials were for an "affiliated faculty" rather than the core so I'm not sure if the core faculty have extended invites yet.
  8. I always like to ask faculty (including my POI) why they're passionate about their research specifically, or how they got interested in it. I like hearing people talk about what they're passionate about, and it helps me get to know them better - plus they seem to enjoy discussing it too!
  9. Waitlist is better than rejection at least! I was also waitlisted by Tech Counseling Psych 2 years ago, but I hope your outcome is better than mine!
  10. For that awkward question I think most of us tried to be gracious about it. I know I didn't want to assume anything about the other applicants and I didn't want to appear presumptuous or rude, so I tried to avoid any specific contrasts.
  11. I did once. From what I recall it was 4-5 of us applicants meeting with 2 faculty at a time, and there were 3-4 of these group interviews. Some were just conversations about a research topic to look at how we shared ideas & listened in a group setting, others were "get to know you" questions, and finally there were some standard interview questions that we took turns answering (strengths & weaknesses, career goals, etc). The most awkward question was, "Why should we pick you instead of the other people in the room?" Hard to answer that when those people are listening.
  12. Some of the current grad students from my interviews said they heard back within 2 days, and others said 3 weeks... I'm really hoping I'll be on the shorter end :x
  13. It really does depend on the school and the funding. Usually there's some sort of priority list for which faculty get to take a student, and *typically* it's just 1 per faculty. Sometimes there will be more than one if they have extra funding sources.
  14. Typically Person of Interest, or Professor of Interest -- basically, the faculty member in a program that you want to work with specifically.
  15. If they like your application then they will likely be accommodating enough to offer a Skype interview (like they do with international students) but I think that has an effect on your chances, even if they don't explicitly factor it in. Not being able to see you in person, see how you interact with grad students and applicants in various settings, etc... but if they like you enough then you can still get offers!
  16. I wouldn't expect that question explicitly, but I do think they're going to be very interested in determining the appropriate fit. It will more likely be phrased as, "Tell me about who you want to work with and why/how your research interests match with theirs? What kind of research do you see yourself doing here? What kind of research would you be interested in doing in your career after graduating?" Questions like that will help them narrow it down, I think, without just flat out making you choose. I just interviewed for a dual-mentorship position (so slightly different from your situation, but a bit relatable) and I was asked why I was interested in the research of each POI, how my research overlapped with theirs, and what I wanted to research there. Interviews tend to be very fit-focused, so if you do have a preference then I'd put more emphasis on that when describing your research experiences/goals. If you don't have a preference then I'd just describe your research very honestly and see where they go from there.
  17. School: UT AustinArea/Degree: Counseling PsychologyRationalization: Unfortunately, the POIs I was interested in were retiring (this was not indicated on the website and I only found out by emailing the POIs), and the other POIs listed just did not line up with my research interests. I was hoping there would be new faculty who might match, but the website was not up to date at all so I really went in blind.Comment: (No official rejection yet, but it seems they've already sent interview invitations so I'm expecting rejection) I expected this result since I didn't match with current POIs listed on the website, but was hoping for a potential miracle. Oh well!Coping tactics: Really pouring myself into the two interviews I have, which are really great fits for my interests and goals. I'm enthusiastic about these programs and professors, and I'm hoping I can nail the interview and get an offer!
  18. I *think* this is just a standard "we've received all your materials and are now reviewing them" message, which wouldn't indicate a decision in either direction
  19. So my upcoming interview is going to have: an optional/"super casual" taco dinner with grad students the night before interviews start, a "dinner party" the next evening after interviews, and then a half-day of interviews following the first. As a guy, I was thinking of dark denim jeans (no tears or anything) and a polo shirt for the optional/casual grad dinner, and then I assume I should just wear my suit the entire full day of interviews including the dinner party, and then the suit with a different shirt+tie for the half day. Does this sound right? Should I wear something else to the dinner party aside from my suit?
  20. I'm not sure UT Clinical has really been sending yet. They're typically later in the month, and the most recent one reported their result as Clinical and Counseling but the POI initials were - I believe - from the counseling faculty. I'm giving them another week or so before I write that one off as a rejection
  21. I'm so sorry - I'm shocked they actually said "not competitive". That seems unnecessarily critical
  22. Did you receive an actual rejection email? I applied here too but haven't heard anything; I've assumed rejection since I missed the notification period
  23. I've kinda heard the opposite - that interviews are the most critical part of the process. Prior to the interview all the applicants are just a combination of comparable achievements and experiences; the interview process is what demonstrates who you are as a person, it determines "fit". The POIs know they're choosing someone to work with for the next 4-6 years, so personal fit is huge.
  24. In my experience, most POIs will bring in about 3 people to interview per spot. I think the ranges I've seen were 2 minimum, 5 maximum, for one spot.
  25. I believe UT Austin has already sent out. I didn't get one either
