@KeepSwimming2017, I've ordered and am waiting! Waiting seems to be a common theme in my life these days. Hopefully I'll have a GC cohort to play with soon!

My dreams so far have been things like showing up to an interview 3 hours late, or getting accepted and going to the first day only to realize I applied to the wrong program (I think in the dream I realized I was enrolled for a Master's in baking or something). Anyone who likes board games- I'm super excited for this one:

@GCFaith92GCFaith92, part of me is hoping the decision will be made for me! Anyone else caught up in the Delta Disaster? I was supposed to fly home at 6:30 this morning, but am now staying until Monday morning. Hopefully that flight will go as planned!

Well, I'm officially done with interviews! I feel relatively good about them, but I know I'll spend the next two weeks going over and over and over everything. I really enjoyed all three programs I interviewed with and am having a heck of a time ranking.

The biggest thing that helped me was reading rather than direct studying. I especially liked reading anything from teachers about mistakes their students make all the time. It was entertaining and helpful. I'm not super happy with my math, so I don't really have any tips. As far as where to apply, it depends on what's comfortable for you. If you want to stay close to home, definitely apply for your state's schools. You may also want to consider Arkansas. The first you you do in Little Rock, but the summer and second year you have the option of going out of state and taking your classes remotely. Not sure if any other programs offer anything similar. I picked schools purely on where I could see myself being happy for two years.

I did the UAMS interview this past Friday! Be ready to do some walking. The process was really laid back and everyone was super nice and welcoming. I was really impressed with the program. Their website does not do it justice at all. Don't sweat it, they really are looking for good fit so they want to get to know you as a person.

The schools know that you're waiting to hear back from other places, so I think they expect that you'll wait to find out all of your options before deciding. I got accepted into the UPitt Public Health Genetics and they acknowledged in the letter that they don't expect me to make any decisions until I hear back on Match Day. Looking at the results for other fields, I'm really glad there is a single Match Day. While the night before and day of will probably drive me crazy, I know I won't hear any answers until then and that's keeping me calm. Well, calm enough!

So far I've only interviewed at VCU, which had 6 one-on-one interviews throughout the day. I had 3 or 4 standard questions, but really ended up asking different questions with each faculty member with whom I interviewed. I wanted to make sure I filled the allotted time, which was really easy. Each time we did go over by a couple of minutes, but it seemed like everyone else did, too.

@HSGC2017, have you gotten any details about your interview on Friday? Has anyone interviewed at UAMS or UPitt that would be willing to tell me about your experience?

That's good to know, thanks! They mentioned that they understood west coast folks may not want to be called at 5am and they could possibly call a little later if asked. But I doubt any of us are going to sleep well on the 23rd, so an early morning call isn't a big deal.

VCU said they start calling for acceptance offers at 8. It sounds like they send out emails a little later, but didn't give any specifics.

Favorite Rejection Quotes from the Results Page

I feel like my paranoia broke the thread! I enjoyed the link on this comment from a Stanford rejection: Sad! i.imgur.com/QYGc9kt.jpg -
I got rejected a couple of weeks ago and mine still says pending.. I did thank you emails to everyone I interviewed with. If there was something that I felt stood out in the interview, I included it in the email. It's a lot of emails and they did definitely get repetitive. @PreGCI would say it isn't too late if you want to send them. This is still the window where you got home and settled back in after your trip. I think waiting any longer might seem like it was an afterthought. I got the impression that most of the other interviewees hadn't thought about or planned on sending thank yous, so I don't really think it's something that everyone does.

Favorite Rejection Quotes from the Results Page

Maybe I'm paranoid, but I don't understand bad mouthing schools on the results page and including things like your stats or anything else that could be identifying. It's not like schools can't search gradcafe if so inclined. -
As far as the programs themselves go, I'm looking foremost at if I feel comfortable there. It doesn't matter how great the program is if I can't focus because being there stresses me out. I'm also looking at when rotations start, the first time pass rate for boards, and if there are other supplemental programs (or a secondary master's like UPitt, or LEND). I'm also looking at how I fit in the city. Is it affordable? Can we find a place to live close to school? Is there functioning public transportation? Places to hike and explore? I'm married, so I'm also looking at if there are job opportunities for my husband, if he'd be happy there..

I would have loved to have that GPA on my application! As everyone has said, grades aren't the biggest part. Experience definitely seems to be much more heavily weighted, and it sounds like you're getting good and relevant experience.

@alalav It's like being in a relationship where the other person won't talk to you anymore, but they won't break up with you either. Just break up with me, UCI, and let me move on!

I just tried it and it popped up right away. I also have a very small number of GCs that come up in any given search (1 if I do a 50 mile radius, 25 if I do 100 miles).

A lot of the GCs I've talked to applied 2 or 3 times. I know it sucks, but you'll get there! And you can pull from this for all of the interviews you'll get next year! (How did you respond, what did you learn about yourself from the experience...etc). Plus it'll show your commitment to the field that you reapplied. And you never know, silence from UCI and CSUS isn't a no yet. Crossing my fingers for you!
