GRE and Clinical Psych (Canada) - should I retake?
ContentFaces replied to Neurophilic's topic in Psychology Forum
I got the sense from that POI that it was their specific cut-off, not across the board for york. Congratulations! -

I personally wouldn't pursue it if you know that you want to do a PhD in the future, given both the fact it's course-based and there's currently no PhD option.- 657 replies

Just happened to me! Take a year to get your bearings, gain more research/applied experience and sharpen (or expand) your goals. For me the biggest issue was that I tried to tailor one of my ideas to the program/POI, rather than opening myself and framing myself as a valuable contributor to their team. For me this meant throwing my statement of intent out the window and starting again from scratch. Also if you have any external funding applications, it may be advantageous to write a proposal specifically off their research, so they can see that you're serious about their work and being a part of their lab. Additionally I suggest broadening the variety of programs you apply to for the next round, and keeping your options as open as possible.

Most of the time it comes across more negative if you contact POIs in the in between stage, unfortunately at this point it's probably best to just wait it out (which I know is excruciating!)- 657 replies

Usually there's the first batch of rejections for people who don't qualify, then there's rolling acceptances. For the most part waitlisted is typically for people who have interviewed and mass rejections will be closer to mid-end of March.- 657 replies

I took the General GRE three times, Psych twice. My second general GRE score was actually the highest out of the three, and my psych was 40th percentile points higher the second time around!

I only used the Kaplan review book and scored in the 93rd percentile. I also agree that you should delve into an intro psych text book, particularly in the area of biological psychology and statisics. What's also important to do is take the practice test ets provides early, and thoroughly research and write up any topics covered in there (even as just multiple choice options). The Kaplan/Princeton review practice tests will give you inflated marks and will be much easier in comparison. Play to your strengths and make sure you know what you know. For example I made sure I did well in clinical and developmental sections as I applied for child clinical programs. As such, my 75th percentile in biological psych didn't matter as much. Also remember that it's nearly impossible to have exhaustive knowledge of the test. Even when you write it you'll come across some things you've never heard before. Stay calm and know that raw score doesn't matter; it's just percentile. I probably only got a 70% on the test but still came out really well overall. best of luck!
