We are on the same boat — I haven’t had any interviews either. Some intel I gathered from at least one of the programs is that the GRE scores are making all the difference. So here’s to retaking them ....

I emailed with the Epi contact at Harvard, asking another question. She did mention decisions are to be going out the third week of February.

LOL! I wonder if anyone else is in the same boat! I've applied to 7 programs, and have only heard back from 2, both with a rejection.... looking into 'contingency' plans

Just got my official rejection from U of Michigan. Epi track. Infectious disease focus. Saw it coming though!

Ditto! I only have gotten one rejection from UWashington. still waiting to hear back from: Columbia, NYU, Rutgers, Harvard, U Michigan, UCLA Have a feeling I’ll be back on these forms next year

lol there is — I only have access because I applied last year and was rejected. The portal was where they posted my decision. This year I checked and I saw my new application was there , but now it has been blank for these past two weeks.

I saw that but it was for NYU Sackler, which is the program through NYU the hospital. I applied to the program through NYU’s College of Global Public Health.

Nope! Also waiting to hear back. From what I remember they usually send out invites in the first week of February.

I saw someone posted an acceptance for UCLA - Epi track on the results page...anyone else heard back? It was my top program in terms of research fit, but they have been radio silent with me

Hey all. I reached out to UCLA to see when we may expect to hear back. Got this: Thank you for writing, I hope this finds you well. The Department will submit its recommendations for PhD applications by the end of next week. Official decisions and notifications will come from the Fielding School and UCLA Graduate Division. Admitted candidates may expect emails from prospective advisors inviting them to meet further by phone, Skype, or in person.” This is from the EPI department. So I wonder if I don’t get an interview request that is probably a big fat “no”

Just got an email from Columbia to fill out the FAFSA... lol last year there was a FinAid survey that seemed to go out to everyone, as I evidently got rejected. So wondering if anyone else just got a similar email?

I did! And I have heard nothing. Tbh it’s probably my top choice given the potential mentor I identified is doing work very similar to what I want to do!! So the anticipation is kill me.

Lack of Research Experience: Worth Applying to PhD Programs?

I think you would need to speak to what experiences you do have in conducting research to speak to your desire in pursuing a PhD to go into a life of research. However, Public Health isn't purely research focused, and many academics go on to work in the field and apply research to the real world. If that is your intention, then say so outright, but speak to how a PhD would help you get to that next step. Always better to address the 'elephant in the room' in your SOP, but then pivot it in a way that still shows your other strengths. Personally, I have 7 years of research experience but a large majority in non-communicable diseases. My passion now is on zoonotic spillover, and so I used my SOP to say while I may have not directly conducted formal research around zoonotic spillover, what my years of experience have taught me is that I do NOT want to continue researching in the field of non-communicable diseases. Sorry for my belated two cents -

Hey y’all, this is my second time applying (first time I only applied to three programs all on the day of the deadline). Hoping this round is a little more successful. This time I have a very clear focus on what research I would pursue as a doctoral student, and also communicated with professors before submitting my application at the majority of the programs I applied to… Fingers crossed this pans out well this time around. Good luck to all! Undergrad Institution: Top liberal arts school Major: English and Pre-Med GPA: 3.4 Variety of writing awards Grad Institution: Reputable university Grad GPA: 3.7 (worked full time while completing my MPH full-time) GRE: 155V, 154 Q, 5.5 W (most recent) Graduation speaker Work Experience: Three years of clinical research operations experience, moving up to a project manager position most recently A variety of data analytical work through research experience, including phase 0 and 1 clinical trials, epidemiological studies in the global health setting, etc… Publications/Presentations: 10+ published, peer-reviewed papers (a few as first author) Two more manuscripts underway Will be submitting a few abstracts to APHA for the coming year Applied to EPI/Pop Health/Public Health (epi-focused) programs: NYU Columbia Rutgers University Harvard UCLA University of Washington University of Michigan LSHTM (will be applying given how the above may play out) Letters of Rec All recent public health professors, all established individuals in their respective fields. One recently became the dean for a school of public health.
