  1. I am not planning on doing the PhD now, I want to do it after a MSW. What do you mean by combined MSW/PhD ? I don't think that combined program exists in my city.
  2. Hello, I have a question for you. I am currently a final year undergraduate student in social work. I live in Quebec, so I had the opportunity to do a counselling program in CEGEP (the step prior to university in this province). I’ve worked mostly with women who have experienced trauma and violence both professionally and on a volunteer basis. I have applied to start research based MSW next fall. My career goals are to teach and do research in social work. I also want to be an advocate for women who have experienced trauma and violence with a feminist perspective and work on policies that affect immigrants, refugees and racialized women here in Quebec/Canada. I am already starting to think ahead and am considering doing a PhD. However, I’ve been told that if I do a PhD right away after my MSW, I will probably be overqualified for clinical jobs. I need to do clinical work as a social worker for 5 years full-time to be eligible to teach in social work in most places. I am turning 25 this year. I am passionate about what I want to study, however, I do not want to send my entire life in school. I have so many projects I want to get involved in and I need to have the proper education for it. Do you guys have a take on this? Am I shooting myself in the foot if I do a PhD right after a MSW ?
  3. Université de Montréal just wrote to us about how their program is competitive. They said the last student that was admitted last year had a 3.8 GPA on 3.43. My GPA is 3.64 on 4. They are also taking into consideration the letters of motivation and CV that we have sent them. But I'm pretty sure I won't be accepted. It's a good thing I've applied to McGill and UQAM, I have greater chances in those two universities I think.
  4. Yes, I have been a research assistant for a few teachers, mainly in the field of youth protection and sexual violence against women and children. At what time should I start thinking about publishing? Thanks for your input!
  5. Hello guys! I'm a newbie so sorry if this question is really basic but how do you get to publish articles in journals when you are a master's student? Thanks
  6. Hello! In Quebec, a group of graduate students created this fabulous initiative called Thésez-Vous. http://www.thesez-vous.com If you guys want to replicate the initiative (create a similar one) if it doesn,t exist already where you live, it would be really amazing. It's basically an organized retreat for graduate students to allow them to work on their thesis. Yoga sessions, meals, beautiful setting, all are included in the price. They have sponsors also from organizations to lower the cost for students. A must!
  7. I am really sorry about that. Have you tried McGill? They take into consideration a lot of other factors than just GPA. Good luck for the second option.
  8. Hello, do you know any groups, associations, facebook groups of black women scholars in social sciences ? I need to build that network of support and possibly get a mentor. Thanks to both of you for your replies.
  9. I feel like it could help me to empower black women (myself included) but I am afraid to get depressed along the way because of everything I will discover.
  10. Is it emotionally hard? I am hesitating to take that path.
  11. Hello! Anyone here has done an accelerated passage from Msc to PhD in the social sciences? What are the pros and cons of doing that? Do you know what are the critieras of the university before doing something like that? Thank you,
  12. Hello, thank you for your reply. 3 out of 4 universities I have applied to had this 80% (A- or 3.7 on 4) first-class average criteria except for McGill for which you need to have achieved 3.6 on 4 in order to be eligible. McGill is my last hope.
  13. Having done a lot of community work is what helped me the most throughout my studies. Also, I've built good relationships with my professors during my undergrad.
  14. Hello, I have applied to four universities to start a MSW next fall. I have also applied to CGS M (SSRHC). One of the universities emailed me to say that I was not eligible, so they rejected my application for the scholarship although I fulfilled other requirements (community work, awards, research experience, etc). Basically, in my last two years of study full-time in my undergraduate degree, I have a 77% average (first year) and a 90% average (second year). My application was rejected because of the first year. I needed to have at least 80% for each year in order to be eligible. Do you think I still have a chance to get the scholarship somewhere else? I am still living at my parents' place and I was planning on moving out if I got the scholarship. But now, I might as well stay another year for financial reasons.
