Sercan_ reacted to Heidegger's Black Dress in Interviews/Acceptances/Rejections Fall 2019
First time posting, hoping to commiserate. I unfortunately went 0/8 this application cycle.
Based on my discussions with adcomm members/DGSs, a vague transcript from my previous PhD program was fatal. I attended the program for a year, achieved candidacy, but withdrew to care for a family member (father with PDS/Alzheimer's). My previous program had stringent residency requirements and proffered an ultimatum at the conclusion of my two semester sabbatical: return to the city - or within 50km - or have funding withdrawn. I chose the latter.
Unfortunately, and at the counsel of my letter writers, I forewent including this information in my SOP. Absent this context - and though my CV made clear my attendance period - many programs read my transcript as indicating I was just now withdrawing from a program I'd attended for four years. Justifiably, they were reticent to admit despite my otherwise favourable profile (4.0 GPA, several publications, many conferences, and a 170/168/6.0 GRE breakdown).
Dejected is a word to describe my current mood; soul-crushing annihilation is another! (Mostly kidding.) I'm not entirely sure why I made this post, to be honest. I think vocalizing the failure to a group of people who understand mitigates the sting - and perhaps prepares me for the embarrassing work of alerting all the "You'll get in everywhere!" people in my life as to my rejections.
To all the admits: congratulations! I hope to join you all next year. To the rejections: read like you're being paid to, publish like it's your job, and kick next year's ass.

Hi. This is the first time that I'm on Gradcafe and I'm not sure if I'm posting at the right place. I applied to UVa, BU, Columbia, and some other programs which turned me down very soon
I posted a result on the board yesterday as I'm waitlisted by UVa. I saw somebody asking me on the board about whether I got interviewed or not. No, actually I didn't hear anything from them until I got the email to check my portal. Maybe it's because I'm an international student and I've never been to USA, so they just couldn't find a chance to interview? lol
Columbia has offered me a seat in master courses, and the deadline to make the decision is March 27. Praying UVa will reach out soon. So if any of you UVa acceptances have better choices, could you let them know as soon as possible? I'd really appreciate it.
BU (I applied for an MA program) said they received more than 180 applications today and only offered admission to 6 of them. Maybe the sociology department of BU is quite small? I don't know, but I think the size of their master program this year is tiny.

lol right? I have two monitors in my office and one of them is devoted to grad school stuff. And I don't use the other. Are you seeing the picture I just drew?

I'm crying. I'm a first gen, dirt poor student who worked 30 hours a week throughout undergrad. homelessness, family deaths, the struggle was real. this means the world to me.

I hope you will get in where you want to! Good luck and fingers crossed! I will likely go to UT Austin as it is a better fit for me! And I like warm weathers

I only applied to UT Austin and am currently on the waitlist. Any applicants who got accepted but will not attend? Hoping to get off the waitlist

I got accepted to Rutgers and I will most probably reject. And one of my friends also will reject soon.

I'm that person. I reject your "oof."
I'm also "batting 1.000" for applications (three of the same schools as the Stanford admit, in fact), but I found the post self-serving, pompous, and falsely humble. The results page is a harbinger of terrible news for many applicants, so the humble-bragging, "woe is me, however did I not anticipate such success? *faint*" celebration is tactless. Note your admission for informational purposes and save your celebration for a venue with more context, such as this thread.
Nattering on about your flawless admission record for a given cycle on the results page is like celebrating your lottery win in front of the breadline.

I feel similarly. So far the only places I've been admitted are UCLA and UT Austin, and it's a really tough call between the two. That data makes me even more sad about not getting into Michigan lol

Best of luck to you in being admitted this cycle ???
if you don’t get in to your top schools, what do you think you could do to make your app tangibly stronger? Obviously I’m not an expert at all, but I was advised to go to a middle tier school over re-applying if I didn’t get in to my top choice. Incredible sociologists come from all schools! I know a lot of people who didn’t go to brand name schools but are still teaching at R1 institutions and are leading experts in their niche areas. Basically I agree that it’s just not worth the stress/anxiety/effort/time/money to wait for a higher acceptance

I think they have sent all admissions. I also applied and learned by emailing to grad coordinator that I was rejected. And still no change in my status.

Me too! It was either a PhD program or buy sperm and finally become a mama. Educational pursuits did me so dirty!

Mine doesn't say that. It still has all my information on it. Dammit now I'm nervous about what could just be a computer glitch haha

the only idea i have is from the results section and the pattern is any of these days in mid Feb.
and looks like we have applied to similar programs because of our interest in southern urbanism
