Quantitative_Psychology got a reaction from psych0 in Fun Post: Best and Craziest Backup Plans
Hi guys,
I think we could go with some entertainment mixed in with some good advice. Therefore, I made this thread. I'm thinking everyone should identify their "best" backup and their "craziest" backup plans (doesn't have to be feasible in the slightest; in fact, it is probably better if it isn't) for if this application season is a bust. Hopefully, some of the crazy will be amusing, and some of the best will be helpful.
Best: Take a position I've been informally offered as a predoctoral fellow for a health research center that my advisor's husband is employed at.
Crazy: You know that movie where the guy gets rejected from universities as an undergraduate and he makes his own school, I'm just saying...

Wouldn't it be fantastic to live in Europe for a period? Would it be a French pastry chef?
You know, I've secretly (or not so secretly) always wanted to open a pub. I thought it would be the coolest place ever. I LOVE your restaurant idea

Legit backup plan: masters of science in psychology, research tract. You'll see me again in a year or two with a better CV with another degree and research experience.
Best/craziest discussed by hubs and I: selling home, buying rv and boat then going world schooling for a bit. You'll see me again in a year or two with a CV with... more experiences.

I posted on this thread a while back in the summer saying I was applying to masters programs. Really excited to find out that today I got an offer for the MS in Applied Stats & Psychometrics program at Boston College and I will be accepting!
Good luck to everyone as you go through the interview process!

Ya I just woke up to an email from UCLA.......so frustrating all it said "your application has been received"......so it looks like they are still getting their bearings after the change in apps.

I do think it is worth keeping in perspective that there have actually been very few schools sending out invites at this time. For example, I've heard from 1/9 schools, and I was shocked to have already heard from that 1. It is also worth noting that if they haven't reviewed their applications yet (or very soon) there will be a decrease in the number of invites going out until after New Years because the schools will take off.

Quantitative_Psychology got a reaction from Rtw12345 in Hearing conflicting info regarding GRE scores
If I were you, I would keep in mind that many of the people responding to you in these forums are in the same boat as you trying to navigate applications. Also, I would say take anything that is said on these forums with a grain of salt because a lot of different factors could influence the opinions expressed. 1) Some I/O programs care more about quant scores than others, 2) This could just be hearsay from different professors and mentors that aren't actually part of the admissions for these programs, and 3) There might be some other aspect of your application that could offset the scores that are not currently being taken into account. I'm not saying that the information you received from the forum is wrong (I personally have no idea), but I would probably put more stock in what the current graduate students at the program are saying. They would know more about that specific program than anyone.

If I may offer some advice from the perspective of someone who already graduated and went on his first round of job hunting, there is an edge from an academic job perspective to go for a quant psych program rather than an ed psych program with a measurement/psychometric focus. I found out (sadly, a little too late) that ed psych type departments have no problem hiring people coming either from ed psych depts or from psych depts as long as the courses/research they did in quant psych overlaps with ed psych (i.e. some emphasis on measurement or psychometrics). Psych depts, however, seem to be a lot less interested in hiring people coming exclusively from ed psych programs.
The course materials and research in both programs are usually 99% similar but I guess it does make a difference to them from which dept you come from :/

I haven't heard anything so far.

Yeah the anxiety is definitely around...the gradcafe result page has a few quantitative programs sending out interviews around the middle/end of December last year, so it is harder for me around these days not to think about it, but the result page records might not always be predictive of the next year.
The way I see it, the ladder of competitiveness in the schools' we applied should allow for an acceptable chance in getting at least one offer? Still I'd certainly hope to avoid too much mind-wandering.

You still haven't answered my question before posing your own.
At this point, my assumption is that you're the same person who started this thread, who clearly had some personal axe to grind, and you've given me nothing to doubt that opinion. Your writing style is nearly identical, and you're a new member with no interest other than pursuing the same exact argument as someone else who conveniently isn't posting anymore.

Dude, you are the original author. Just let this thing die. You are making a big deal out of conspiracy theories. This is fake news.
