  1. Ok folks, here's the sitch. I applied for my masters in speech language pathology last fall, and I'm hoping to start this fall. Before submitting each application I checked and rechecked every part of my application a million times. I have only one school that I'm still waiting to hear from (they usually send out admissions decisions around the third week of March) so I went to review that app just for kicks. That is when I discovered a HORRIBLE ERROR. On the last page of the application their is an option to select whether you would like to be considered for the full time or part time program via a drop down menu and I chose PART TIME when I want to be FULL TIME. The main issue with this is that the school doesn't select many for the part time program and I want to be full time anyway! I can't believe that this slipped by me until this moment in time. Is there anything I can do to fix this or is it too late? Do I just accept my fate as being admitted for part-time or nothing?
  2. I applied to 5 schools, so far I've been admitted to 2, pending notification after an interview from 1, and haven't heard anything from the other two (but won't expect to for a few weeks). My stats: GPA 3.75 (CSD GPA 3.9), GRE 155V 153Q 4.0AW Other info: 2 research projects related to language, active participation in CSD club on campus, volunteer work in an elementary school, hospital, and an aphasia clinic, significant experience working with children as a teacher's aide, completed observation hours, and 2 of my LORs came from faculty in CSD who know me quite personally, and 2 of my letters came from out of field faculty who also know me quite well. You actually have pretty similar qualifications to me, and my luck has been pretty good so far. I applied to schools in the west, though, like Washington/Oregon/California. Good luck, I hope you get some good news soon!
  3. UM's website says they send out a second application to applicants who meet candidacy and try to make admissions decisions by early march although they can be late... has anyone gotten that second application yet??
  4. Pretty much as the title says, but how soon is too soon to ask a professor how their letter is coming? For example, I sent a professor a request for recommendation about 8 days ago (after telling him to check his email and his spam box for it) and he hasn't yet even accepted the request. I figure he might just accept the request and write the whole letter in one sitting when he gets a chance, but when would it be appropriate to check in to see if he received the request?
  5. Hi everyone, So, I am currently in the process of applying to graduate school, and while I feel very confident about my application, I'm super nervous about asking for letters of recommendation. To provide you with some information, my overall GPA is a 3.7, and the GPA of my minor (the field I want to go into) is a 3.9. Further, I am currently executing two relevant research projects which will make my application stand out. I have already decided on two of my recommendors. One is going to be my work supervisor who has known me personally and professionally for three years. I feel like she can speak to my abilities as a professional, and her letter will nicely complement those of two professors. Another letter will be from a professor in my major with whom I took two classes and received A's in (I selected him because he's very, very nice and I think he would say wonderful things about anyone). It is my final letter which I am struggling with. I need this letter to come from someone in the department which I intend to pursue my master's in (the one I am minoring in). Unfortunately, I feel like I haven't been able to develop strong relationships with these professors as I have only taken 1 class with any of them, and their main focus is with graduate students so there are no research or teacher's aide opportunities with them. Two years ago, I took two classes with the same professor in the department and got A's in both. I participated a lot in class and did quite well, but I feel as though by now she will have forgotten me. Also, there is a professor that is my advisor and is also the advisor of the club I am president for, but she's never taught me in a course and is only now beginning to get to know me. In general, I feel like I am a very independent learner and have not cultivated strong enough relationships with any professors to get particularly good letters of recommendation. Has anyone else been in a similar situation, and what have you done to overcome it? Thank you so much for your input!
  6. In the fall, I am going to begin my graduate school application process for Speech Pathology. I have some pretty good things going for me: a 3.8 GPA, 4.0 in my major, research experience, letters of recommendation lined up already, and an awesome internship opportunity coming up this summer. But, there is one small problem: I have conduct violations from my freshman year on my record (two violations related to underage drinking when I was 18). I know how stupid it was to drink when I was 18, let alone in the dorms, but I was dumb and depressed and well, it happened. I went through the conduct process, learned my lesson, and even though I am now 21 years old I don't drink at all. The record of these incidents does not appear on my academic record, but it does appear on a separate conduct record. I know that when I apply to grad school, there will be a question on the application asking whether I've ever had any conduct violations, and another about criminal offenses. I do not have a criminal record. My question is what would be the best approach to this? Do I NEED to report my offenses if they don't appear on my academic record? And further, how much will these offenses impact my chances of being accepted to a program? Thank you so much for any insight you are able to provide!
