  1. MY FEEL ALL THE TIME NOW.
  2. This is a really delicate balance, but something you won't know until you try. I did this at interviews and had it backfire horribly on me, and other times it suggested I was well read and knew more intricacies about the topic than most. From what I know now, I would err on the side of caution. It's one thing to bring in new ideas, but its another thing to bring in a whole new direction to the lab which may leave PIs scratching their heads. Doesn't mean your ideas aren't relevant, good or pertinent to the lab's topic, but I think PIs would rather take a more safe and "sure" pick than to go out on a limb and choose someone with fascinating ideas and future directions which may not align as well with their work. /rant start I tend to be on the more daring end with my ideas and I have no regrets because it really does help both parties assess fit. I'm not going to do something I even marginally dislike, and I'm putting it out there as diplomatically as possible for my PI as well so they can get an idea of whether they'd want my ideas there or not. I could have very easily manipulated my interests in ways which would have improved my chances and fit, but I chose to stay true to my own interests. This is a hardass way of looking at things, and is likely not the best way to go by things unless you're sure you can sell your ideas (and you're egotistical and ballsy enough to give it a try--haha). The way I see it, I want to be at the place which is ideal for me. I don't mind re-applying instead of going somewhere where I'd be meh happy with, also my main interest is research so that is a very big factor I weigh. Big balancing act with this. /rant over Anyone else have thoughts about this?
  3. Queens is also testing my sanity, invites haven't gone out yet so hang on--we're in this together (sigh).
  4. Adult clinical people have started looking at things and doing prelims, I think CD are generally slower so theres that.
  5. I applied right out of undergrad knowing my odds were slim, hopefully I'll report back with good news lolol. I think its pretty clear that the clinical game is so competitive nowadays; having a few years off is almost essential for the R1s, unless you're some research prodigy, but thats pretty rare.
  6. Sorry amigo shoulda specified I meant Ryerson lol! No clue whats happening at OISE or ottawa
  7. For Ryerson, by this point, even if your POI is not participating in open house, you should have gotten some notice from them (if you're on their shortlist). I would take it as rejection at this point. While its true not all POIs are going to be recruiting at open house, those that aren't have arranged alternate means.
  8. Nice to know I'm not alone in my misery lol, hardest wait thus far--sigh.
  9. Technically not POIs have sent prelims, we should hear by the end of this week as they have open house shortlist finalized by now (I think).
  10. Anyone else waiting on POIs at Queens?
  11. Ur killing it this cycle mate, congrats!
  12. Their app fell into the admissions VOID
  13. bruh Harvard's playing games with my head DECLINE ME ALREADDDYYYY
  14. The politics of being a practising mental health professional in Canada warrant a whole other thread--really interesting stuff. There is a new board that oversees licensing of "psychotherapists" in Ontario, and there's a lot of buzz about that because basically anyone can do therapy now. I know I've had profs discourage us from seeking a Clinical Psych PhD if their interest is solely in private practise. There are much shorter ways to be able to """"help people"""" and do psychotherapy without all that unnecessary schooling. I don't know much about this topic, but I'd love to know more about what its like being a practising clinical psychologist in 2019, because I hear its a bit up in the air. My interest is almost entirely research so I guess I'm kind of spared? LOL
  15. Sounding like a mega keener isn't a bad thing, I think it's better than sounding uninterested. I'd just say to space it out and send it a few days after the interview. I write my emails fairly true to my personality, which occasionally means throwing in some colloquialisms i.e., "super interesting", "awesome [insert word]" to liven up otherwise dry emails and let my character come through in correspondence (otherwise I sound a bit too stiff).
  16. Can't help but think it'd make more sense to set up a committee to determine who's admitting in advance and once thats figured, leaving it up to POI choice. York works like that. I wonder if problems would come up in deciding priority order in advance if someone doesn't find a student they'd like to admit or whatever. Logistics of admissions seem kind of fun (pretending to be on the other side LOLOL).
  17. I've heard of this at a few places, especially where theres priority sequence for who gets to take a student. I thought that would be the case for mostly committee-led schools, not Rye which is almost entirely POI choice.
  18. Damn that was a plot twist eh--thought it was all POI choice at Rye
  19. Gaaaaahhhh, basically my last chance for this cycle--the wait is gonna be intense
  20. Thanks as well, congrats to your friend!
  21. Harvard's totally up in the air tbh no one knows how they do anything there. I think it's safe to assume that if you haven't heard back by the end of Feb you're rejected. Cheers to the waiting game, I just hope my POI lets me know sooner than later.
  22. grad cafe meet up at ryerson!!!!--we need a cool hand sign to throw at each other so we can be spotted DISCRETELY as total nutcases
  23. Telling you now, pubs aren't as important as connections/fit, and even then, a lot of stuff goes into assessing whether the pub is "meaningful" or not, including author order, impact factor, and a million other things. If I could've been able to get in on my pubs alone, I would've by now--but I havent (haha!). Don't stress that too much, lots of people get in without pubs.
