  1. Thank you sooo much, this clears up the process and makes sense given no one knew if they had a spot or not lol. Clinical is in the same department, and spots are doled out for Psychology in general, so I don't think there are area quotas...reasonable to believe this applies there too. Had desperately hoped it wasn't an admission panel assessing applications, so now I know I'm shit out of luck with my awful numbers! LOL, was banking my odds on my POI basically nabbing me on fit/etc alone.
  2. Does anyone know how Harvard make their admission decisions? I know it goes through GSAS and then they forward it to the department, but from that point, is it up to a admissions panel to assess the applications or does the PI have unilateral say in who they want?
  3. Positively reinforcing time spent anywhere but grad cafe if you're at peace with the outcome of your work, there's no reason to be anxious. Accept that you have done the best that you could this year, and that if the process doesn't go as planned, you can take another stab at it next year!
  4. Hey its over now, so you're free pps you're not held to your idea, you can just make one up.
  5. All the schools had a place in the web form for the PDF format GRE score summary, available in your ETS account
  6. Nah man, submitted around the same time as you, so if its by print, don't think any of my schools will get 'em soon. Unofficial is good enough, as people have said, not having in official scores at this time isn't that big of a problem.
  7. Navigating Queen's form was such a headache, christ! Just realized I left out a conference abstract, why didn't they just let us upload materials from pdf -.- sigh
  8. Anyone sending their POIs an email after they submit? Last time I was in contact with most was in August, think it'd be nice to remind them to keep an eye out for my app.
  9. take a deep breath in and out
  10. Joining the pool of anxious applicants with good research experience/letters/cvs/pubs, but shitty numbers! Here's to hoping our apps don't get thrown in the garbage before they make it to our POI's hands!
  11. Dat school list though ?! We'll be gunning for the same person at Harvard (98% sure). You sound like an awesome applicant, best of luck.
  12. I interpreted that question on the form as kind of covering their bases, in the case that you're unlikely to attend without funding and you haven't applied for any external funding, they might be less likely to admit you--purely from a logistics standpoint. When i reached out to my poi at UBC, she strongly underlined applying for external funding and that seems to be a thing for sure at UBC (and most other Canadian schools, who are reluctant to admit international students simply because of how programs are funded and all).
  13. I highly doubt a PsyD program would care about a 40th percentile quant score. Social psych/neuro/clinical PhD maybe, but I know people who've gotten in with that percentile for clinical PhD programs--which are far more research focused.
  14. Instinctively, I think you'd be a better fit in MSW, which has a greater focus on social justice work. You can still be licensed as a psychotherapist through an MSW, so its a pretty good idea. All programs you mentioned are pretty much excellent as far as I've heard.
  15. I think you have nothing to be worried about, you sound like a very strong applicant and your scores are pretty much above average everywhere. Note that average scores fluctuate (sometimes quite drastically) year to year, and you'll be compared against the rest of the class applying that year, so its a matter of who you'll be competing against this cycle, not from years past. If schools are worried about your writing/verbal score, they can look at your SOP or writing samples to see what kind of a writer you are.
  16. harvard has one on their site, routinely updated. https://undergrad.psychology.fas.harvard.edu/post-graduate-research-jobs
  17. I got this too and it threw me off a bit, especially after sending such a detailed email. Chalked it up to their approach to dealing with prospective students, they didn't explicitly state their preference for how/if to be contacted but I'm guessing they're choosing to chat with applicants who get shortlisted. Some POIs don't like engaging in extensive chitchat because they're either very popular and don't have the time, want to keep things impartial until apps come in, or some other reason i've yet to hear ;). >thinks of resending the email, expressing entirely different research interests from the POI, just to see if they'd send me the same response LOL
  18. Your application looks pretty strong in spite of the weak quant score--luckily for us we're psychologists not mathematicians lol. +1 on focusing on other aspects of your app.
  19. I gave a brief review of my past work, future directions I'd be interested in pursuing under my POI's guidance (the pitch!!), asked what they were looking for in a student, whether they'd be accepting and attached my CV. Admittedly, my emails tended to run pretty long, so I don't know how much my POIs read--one gave me a specific positive response, one a more general positive, and the other a bit more vague "yep I'm accepting, I'll be looking forward to reading your app". Always attach your CV tbh, if thats one thing you do.
  20. Don't underestimate your experience in a biostats environment (assuming you've made some meaningful contribution in the lab). It shows off your quantitative analysis skills, which social psych people (at least the one's I know) quite value. Even if the methods are different, that kind of statistical thinking ability can come in handy when you might not expect it. Also seconding finding a supervisor with S/P interests (even outside of psychology) at your school or an actual social psychologist at a nearby school for research experience. I don't think anything beats that in terms of applicable experience and a potential reference.
  21. canadian here, probably going to dabble in the 2019 cycle and see what happens. tbh everything on my list is a reach, but im pretty ready to apply again for 2020. yeehaw, we ain't scared of rejection here! *sobbing*. still have my GRE to take though, fingers crossed. If anyone wants to talk about applying to the states as a canadian, I would be glad to hear from you! Also is anyone considering Harvard? They have no application stats/outcomes for the incoming classes aside from enrolment numbers--would be nice to have some stats to refer to. all clin: Can: UBC, UVic US: Harvard, Rutgers, WashU, Stony Brook, Northwestern
