Re: my job woes, I finally got an email back about a job I applied for (have literally applied to over ten the past two or so weeks). Still in the application process, but fingers crossed!!

@CulturalCriminal, I have to laugh at your description of the student body, because it is, well...true.
I went to a wealthy DFW high school and MANY of our rich white folk went to A&M. However, I don't know a single person who didn't absolutely love their time there, so I'm sure all of you guys will absolutely love it as well!

Wow, congratulations to all the SUNY people! -buffalo emoji-

I went to North Dakota State (a rival of UND) for my undergrad and MA. Grand Forks is an ok city. Fargo is much better in my opinion. The support, funding, and teaching experience that I got at NDSU set me up on a great path! Don't overlook some of the schools that aren't ranked as highly (especially for your MA).
Oh it's definitely not because of the ranking - it's more so because some of the schools I applied to are in cold places (for me) but ND is like the tundra!

Interesting. I’m at the point where in my mind getting into a program = life starts and I’m an adult so it also means = getting a horse again?! (Mine died in 2007) Of course that’s not how it works so I’m vicariously living through others’ experiences. I was looking into boarding stables, and for instance my horse lived with a herd on fields and the stable was owners-only. Pretty cheap also since it was in the country. Is that something you think exists here? Maybe we should pm haha.
Yes, please PM me!

Tell me more about the horse. Do you think you wil easily find another place to keep him/her once you move?
My plan is to tour local boarding stables while I am at whatever area I will be moving to looking for housing for myself/touring the school. Originally, I was going to lease him out and leave him here for a few months, but I was having serious anxieties over it so my mom (also big animal person) said I need to just arrange to take him with me at the time I go. I purposely only applied to schools in locations where the cost of living is fairly low, equating to the cost of having a horse being cheaper than say the Northeast.

I've applied for so many jobs and literally only heard back from two, and neither of those worked out because the hours were much less than what they advertised. I'm so frustrated. I'm no longer trying to even find anything pertinent to my degree, I just need a job, but it's so slow and I'm starting to get stressed. I have something lined up for February and the beginning of March, but I really would feel better if I had something solidified.
Also, I got my tonsils out Wednesday and still feel like hell a lot of the times. I keep checking my email hoping that a grad app response would cheer up me, but nothing so far...

I'm really glad you made this thread, because the question has been on my mind as well.
I haven't heard back from any schools yet, but I can't imagine committing to moving my whole life to a new school without at least visiting first. How long does the typical visit last? Is it normal to ask about housing and life in the area while you're there? Or, worst of all, what if a school doesn't give you a response until April and you don't have time to visit before making a commitment?

@katie64 I'm from California and only applied to one school in this state. I'm coming to the realization that there's a good chance I'll be moving somewhere with real seasons, haha.
The only place I've ever lived besides Texas is San Diego, so I feel you there. I definitely prefer real seasons and just cannotttt with the extreme heat anymore. Even my horse is extremely sensitive to the heat, so I feel like it's much needed for both of us to move somewhere cooler hahaha.
-
I'm from Texas and absolutely HATE the summers. I get soo heat sick so often, and so I purposely only (mostly) applied to colleges that are in states with real winters and milder summers. It's easier for me to bundle up in the cold than sweat my face off in the heat.

@FreakyFoucault, your posts are seriously the best. All of your threads and posts make me seriously laugh out loud, and I laugh every time you say "shellacked." I'm sure I'm not the only one, so seriously, thank you for putting a smile on our faces during this somewhat stressful time. You're AWESOME.

Congrats to the Purdue acceptance!! One of my top choices.

For anyone who applied to the MA at Louisville, did they ask you to indicate your area of concentration on your app? They didn't on mine, and I had emailed them prior expressing interests in taking classes in both rhet/comp and creative writing (I have a few publications and it's definitely a big area of interest of mine), so they encouraged me to send a creative writing sample as well. My SOP clearly indicates I'm also interested in rhet/comp, so hopefully they take that into account...

Ugh, yes. Definitely not thrilled about Purdue's crypticness in terms of notifying applicants, especially because they're one of my top choices.

I applied to MA programs. I’m interested in studying the use of personal narratives in social justice movements. I applied to Saint Louis, Louisville, Iowa State, Purdue, and Oregon State.
That's awesome - that's one of my interests too.

@mk-8, no, unfortunately they do not have a rhet/comp MA, but they have a more flexible program with opportunities to take classes in creative writing, rhet/comp, & lit - they're not strictly lit-based.

I literally had my dad hand me my phone while I was still coming off a major anesthesia high in my hospital bed after getting my tonsils cut out so I could check my email.
