I'm not even getting false alarms! And, really, this obsession is becoming a problem. I was having a perfectly interesting conversation with my co-workers, but halfway into it I started having legit anxiety that I wasn't near my phone or computer. Hoping for news from OSU this week sometime.

I just got waitlisted for a Gender Studies program -- first non-rejection in two years; I suddenly feel like maybe I have a chance.

FALSE ALARM, DON’T PANIC: There’s a Chicago interview in Cognition on the board that really got my heart going.

They almost certainly will not care about something small like that, &, if that was enough to disqualify you, just remind yourself that a department with that little generosity is probably a bad fit for you.

Sitting at work, actually doing something productive, then I think, "Oh my god, it's been five minutes, I need to check the results board and forum immediately."
This is going to be a long couple months...

    ^big mood.
I have a PhD prep syllabus/thing made up but am too scared to do it - I feel like it's tempting fate in a maybe not-good way. Though maybe I should it. I don't know. Ugh.
TV is great - I just finished The End of the F***ing World and loved it and am starting The Good Place now - and I've started playing Hearthstone again. I'm not very good but it's a decent way to pass the time.
I've also been enjoying GC threads from years past  - I've decided it doesn't "count" if I'm reading old threads instead of refreshing the results screen. Some of the threads are hilarious and the shade that gets thrown around in mid-Feb during the '09/'10 years is high-quality. So, if you're needing to be on here but not wanting to be, seeking out threads with silly titles and lots of responses may be fun.

My husband has been trying to get a "head start" for the language exam (at least Maryland's), which they want you to take in the first year. You have to choose two books in the language that they'll select a 350(?) word segment from for you to translate, I think. I gave him Omon Ra by Victor Pelevin for Christmas since apparently this dude is part of the Russian 'new sincerity' and I wasn't sure if that was in any way related to the American new sincerity. So he's reading it in English to see if it could work as one of the books for his exam (if he even gets into/goes to Maryland)! The other would probably be a Nabokov novel.
I loved The Good Place, and highly recommend Mindhunter!
And don't feel disheartened--it seems like this is such an unpredictable process, a rejection does not mean you aren't a stellar applicant. With such super low acceptance rates, amazing applicants are going to be rejected sometimes, for reasons we may never know!

Nothing sane or healthy about how often I check my emails/the results board/this forum, but I'm not gonna pretend like that's gonna stop soon. I do make an effort to leave my phone in the opposite side of the house when I'm at home to reduce the obsessive check-ins. In the meantime, I am trying to read more--although I was silly enough to think I could get a "head start" with grad school and work on my reading list for that. After the implied rejection from Emory (since I didn't get invited to interview), I'm feeling disheartened and find I want to binge-watch TV shows instead. I'm currently finishing up The Good Place, Black Mirror, and The End of the F***ing World. I have plans to start The Crown, Dark, Mindhunter, Godless, Glow, and like 10 other shows. The End of the F***ing World is on Netflix and is definitely not going to be everyone's cup of tea since it's dark comedy and pretty violent, but I'm crazy about it. I've also been playing Yoshi's Woolly World and working on jigsaw puzzles. Really living life while I wait, lol.

You've given me an idea for every time my mother calls.
11/10 agree you're selected to all. 11/10 believe they are staring at the phone during the weekdays - waiting, hoping, praying you'll call back. Have you gotten any voicemails of just breathing? I'm assuming several. Nerves, you know - crazy things.

I had spelling errors in my app that I didn't notice until I was helping a friend through their apps this year. I still got into great programs. "Bloopers" freak us out, but good ideas and scholarship still stand out .

    Don't worry too much

Not exactly an English program (but lit theory related!), and not exactly an acceptance, but I just got word from UC Santa Cruz History of Consciousness that I am on their short list! I was not expecting to hear from them for a while, especially because they don't do interviews... but I'm thrilled! Final decisions should be out by mid February. Fingers crossed for good news.

@FreakyFoucault I work in a university research institution and spend a lot of time banging my head against a wall doing the same, except with doctors *and* academics. I like a lot of what I do, but I've gotten very fed up working to improve other people's projects instead of conducting my own. In short, I'm bored. It's been really useful, though, in helping me to narrow my interests. I've specialized in early modern stuff for a long time, but I've been able to refine my focus--early modern medicine and medical rhetoric. I've been pleasantly surprised at the parallels between my interests and the conversations taking place in contemporary health sciences.

Okay so this isn't an acceptance but my husband just received an email saying that he is on the "short list" for the University of Maryland and inviting him to a Skype interview next week! We are local to the school so he's going to offer to go in person (not sure if that's an option) but I AM SO EXCITED FOR HIM!
P.S. Any PhD interview tips would be super appreciated!
