  1. I just spent the first 5 minutes of my phone interview stumbling through my words and it got so bad I had to tell the PI "I'm more nervous than I thought I would be, I'm sorry" hahaha. Please tell me I didn't mess this up
  2. Of course! There are goals you just can't attain if you don't take this risk. You have to want it that badly. And you'll keep trying until you get it! You'll be okay <3
  3. I have heard this with the distinct exception of French, but perhaps that's just in Paris, haha
  4. Yes! Ideally it would be a French pastry chef because there are a few whose work I really admire, but I don't speak French so that might be a problem
  5. This is a great idea! "Best"/actual plan: stay in my current full-time position as a research coordinator to gain more research experience and earn a letter of rec from my current PI (I've only known him for 3 months so I didn't ask for an LOR from him this time 'round). Crazy plan: Quit my job, move to Europe, and intern under a pastry chef.
  6. Ahhhh I'm starting to see people getting interview invites to other psych areas at UMich and I'm trying not to freak out that I haven't gotten one for clinical yet, but I'm having such a hard time not drowning in anxiety
  7. I have no idea. I'm sure there are lots of programs that don't do preliminary interviews at all... I mean the majority of the programs I applied to haven't popped up on the results board at all yet.
  8. I think it depends on the program; I don't think all of them send mass invites. And even the ones that do, they might do so in batches. Don't get discouraged.
  9. How to Frame Your Weaknesses as Strengths 101
  10. Ahhh no I didn't mean to add to the panic!
  11. Sorry to creep but if you're talking about Nebraska-Lincoln, all of the posts I saw were rejections, so maybe that's good?
  12. Oh what a strange application process. I'm so glad they are honoring your application fee! That must have been quite a scare.
  13. You paid the application fee, but your application wasn't submitted? How do you know you didn't submit the whole thing? For one of the schools I applied to (not UW-Milwaukee), the "application" link just links to a list of each individual piece of my app where it says whether it was received or not, and the instructions say that as long as everything says "received," the application is complete. I guess I'm a little confused how you were able to submit a payment without submitting the application? In any case, I would just call them to find out. Edit: Did you get a confirmation email from them?
  14. I TOTALLY understand this; I'm the exact same way. Glad I'm not alone in my craziness My experience is the opposite actually; it seems like last year, my schools of choice notified (for interviews) like December 9th-18th so I'm over here trying not to bite my fingernails off. It's my first year applying, so I don't really know what to expect.
  15. This is an excellent point. And a funny anecdote; I feel a little bad but thanks for the laugh
  16. Hey, thanks. My plan b is to remain at my current job as a research coordinator in an R1 Dept of Psychiatry. My problem though is that this job isn't related to my topic of interest and I've been a research coordinator for 2.5 years; I feel like I spent enough time preparing for grad school and waiting until I was ready to apply that it's going to be a huge bummer if I have to keep doing this job for another year, even though it's helping me gain research experience. Going to try to sit tight and wait to hear from the other 5 schools! Hope one of them is a better match for me
  17. Welp, just got my first (very generic) rejection email. 5/6 to go. Any tips on how to keep my head up?
  18. If they aren't for the program you applied to, I wouldn't worry. Schools often don't have just one timeline for all of their programs, so different programs at the same school may have drastically different timepoints when they send out interview invites.
  19. Wow, you seem so calm about everything! Teach me your ways
  20. I'm interested to see others' responses to this too, since this is my first year applying so I've never dealt with this situation before. I think you should decide which school to prioritize over the other in case you have to. Then tell the other school that you are very interested in the program and are excited to have received an interview invite; however, you have a scheduling conflict and are inquiring about the possibility of scheduling an interview for a different day. Let them know that rescheduling would be the most ideal option for you since meeting them in person would be the best way to truly express your interest in the program and learn more about the people and environment there, but if rescheduling isn't an option, you would like to know if a video or telephone interview is possible.
  21. I think you should tell the schools that though you worked under this PI for 2 years and gained many valuable research skills in his lab, you did not spend much time working directly with him and therefore do not feel that he is the best person to accurately and effectively speak to your potential as a researcher. It sort of sounds like you already submitted your applications with other letters of rec, and now schools are asking for a supplementary letter? If so, you have a couple options: (1) respond to the school with the above info (or something similar) and ask them if they think a letter from a postdoc from the lab would benefit your application, or (2) preemptively ask a postdoc you were close with for a letter, and submit it with your response to the school's request. Good luck!!
  22. We're all so bad at following our own advice, it's comical.
  23. Ohh no, I'm sorry Did you apply to multiple programs?
  24. SAME. Ugh. I'm just going by the old medical world rule, "no news is good news," and hoping my applications aren't lost in the void.
  25. I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea, but it depends on the program. I will tell you it's getting increasingly more difficult for people to get into Clinical Psychology PhD programs in the States with the intention of pursuing clinical practice; these programs are pretty research-focused. Not sure if that's the case in Italy, so that may be something worth exploring.
