  1. My friend from my MA got a call from UNC. His AOI is metaphysics and phil mind.
  2. Hi B - This application cycle I was admitted to both FSU and UF for their PhD programs. I also visited FSU's campus, and later accepted their offer for admission. I will say that FSU has almost no continental stuff going on there, but they do have a strong program overall. Although several people do philosophy of psychology, so that may overlap with your interests some, and they have a talented Ancient guy there. UF has more of a continental presence going on, for sure. I would go to their faculty page and look at those listed as continental and see if their research vibes with yours. As far as strength of program, you'll do well at UF; they are solid. They had to suspend their program for a bit because the university cut their funding, but they are back, and they have some quality work going on there. You could do much worse. It seems, also, to have a vibrant grad population. I can't really say if it will be worth your time, though. It depends on your overall goals. If you're going for the English PhD, though, I wouldn't worry too much about your choice. UF will be just fine for you. I hope this helps a bit!
  3. I don't think so. A good writing sample in Metaphysics will cover a multitude of sins. Also, you could always ask directors of ad coms what they think.
  4. Well, I'll defer to other opinions here, but I think you're fine!. One A- won't give adcoms pause, especially if you kill a writing sample in that area.
  5. I hope you get it! But Fordham is a great consolation prize, if not!
  6. Hello UNC people: I bravely emailed Dr. Paul again. I'll let you know what she tells me. It's April 15th, after all!! EDIT: OK that was quick, lol. I got a rejection.
  7. Removed myself from Ohio State’s wait list
  8. Option A imo. Money aspect will take a lot of pressure off of you. And being close to home is very helpful. Also, since it's an MA, you don't have to zero in on your AOIs this early. You can always explore your AOIs in a PhD. Plus, your AOIs can always change!
  9. Nice!!! I really hope for an answer soon from them, as I'm holding off accepting an offer until I hear from them.
  10. I haven't received one either. Probably just comes in waves, I'm guessing?
  11. I second the above. I got a response yesterday, and it was the same thing.
  12. Yea I 2nd the above. I got "unlikely, though far from impossible" on my solicitation. And from what I remember, non-trivial means you are decently high on the wait list. So it definitely could happen for you!
  13. Haha!! Glad to meet you! I'm looking forward to it!
  14. Cool, well I look forward to meeting you in Tallahassee come August, if it comes to that!
  15. What are you thinking? Are you going to try for one of the wait lists? I ask because I am strongly leaning towards accepting FSU's PhD offer.
  16. Haha. Ah, well you never know! I hope you get a great offer somewhere.
  17. Yea. It was a brutal 3-4 weeks. I didn't put my best foot forward for various personal reasons, but I was happy to have the success I did given the situation. I have certainly played the "what-if" game a lot in the past 3 months. Moral of the story: don't do what I did!
  18. How good of a program are we talking? lol The most important bit is certainly the writing sample. I have a 4.0 GPA and a near perfect GRE (170, 168, 5.5), but I didn't get into any top 20 programs. I wrote my writing sample in 3 weeks before the deadline, so it's not my best work. But it did get me 3 acceptances and 4 wait lists, with some decent schools in there.
  19. I have several potentially attractive wait lists, so yes, I will probably be making a decision very close to the deadline.
  20. I'm in the same boat with several of my wait lists. Some schools add a person at a time as people decline, and some do it all at once, and they are not guaranteed to do it right away. So unfortunately we just have to be a bit patient. This might come down to the wire for many of us.
  21. Is the AOI of any wait listed people early modern? That’s mine, so I’m wondering if there are several of us or what.
  22. Cool. What’s your AOI, if you don’t mind me asking?
  23. Nope. I just emailed Walter Ott to inquire about the wait list. I can let you know what he says
  24. Alright! But dang it looks like a big wait list... Crossing my fingers.
