  1. @E-P @Ishouldbewriting @whitmanifesto Thank you for being so encouraging!! I think my partner and I are feeling a lot better now about whatever the future holds
  2. @E-P Thanks for the support! It's definitely been an emotional couple of days for us (and will continue to be emotional). I did propose the idea of doing monthly visits, since I feel like NY-Chicago isn't too bad of a flight, and it sounds like NU's stipend will actually give me enough money to do that
  3. @sriracha18 This is my second time applying to MCC. I'm honestly not super surprised, even though I'm still disappointed. A faculty member I spoke to in the department was very sympathetic but ultimately warned me that my project would be difficult to support in the dept and that I'd have to figure out just the right angle to sell it, and I guess I wasn't able to do that. I've already broached the topic of moving with my SO and unfortunately, he doesn't want to. So I have to decide if pursuing a PhD is worth the strain on my relationship, plus deciding what to do with the cats (would probably make the most sense to leave them with my SO, but one of them I've had since he was 2 months old so it's really hard to think about not having him with me). It's really bittersweet. I think NU would be an amazing place to be and my POI there does really amazing work that I definitely want to be involved with, but it would also require huge sacrifice and commitment for what is honestly a super unstable career path.
  4. Accidentally posted in the wrong thread! But I got my NYU MCC rejection today. Last night I had a serious crisis about the idea of leaving my SO, friends, cats, behind to move to Chicago.
  5. Got the NYU MCC rejection today. Still excited about NU, but the prospect of moving to a whole new city without my SO (or cats!) is really daunting, and I'm starting to have serious doubts about whether I'm cut out for this.
  6. Wanted to ask some follow-up questions about this. I totally realize that I'm probably overthinking this, but who of us is not overthinking things? The dinner looks like it's organized by the admissions office rather than the department (e.g. the admissions office reached out to confirm travel dates/hotel, etc). Would it be out of place to ask them about dress code? I want to write back to the department to ask if they have a better idea of the schedule or at least who I'll be meeting. The DGS has been my main contact thus far, but he did mention (and copy) my POI as someone he wants to make sure I talk to. I reached out to my POI individually but he didn't respond. Should I email the DGS with POI CC'd or just DGS w/o POI on the email?
  7. I'm waiting for official responses from NYU and USC but expect them to be rejections.
  8. @mintless Yeah, me too. I'm still holding out hope though, since no one's posted about interviews yet...
  9. @mintless Did you apply to NYU MCC or a different dept?
  10. Two weeks until I head to NU! Still mostly unsure of what to expect; I plan on emailing the department next week to see if they have a schedule ready...
  11. Still nothing on the NYU front, but it's hard to know where they are in their process... I was hoping for good news, since I had a POI tell me she'd advocate for me :\
  12. @Ajensetta NYU MCC's website states that interview requests should go out "by mid-February," so I assume they do interviews every year. Hard to know if last year was early or not since there's not a lot of posts in previous years with interview dates...
  13. @Ajensetta Unfortunately, I'd assume so at this point. It looks like you already have a color coded signature? Also, I see you're also applying to NYU MCC? I'm getting anxious about that one, I know they send out interview invites pretty late compared to other schools...It's my last remaining hope, other than NU!
  14. Congrats to everyone with good news! I wanted to share an update: the visit weekend at Northwestern (March 1-4) appears to be a recruitment visit for the entirety of the Graduate School, not just MTS. Since it's still a couple weeks away, I don't know what this means for programs that haven't started contacting people yet, like RPC.
  15. Yeah. My MA was in a material culture/museum studies field and honestly not very methodologically rigorous... My adviser basically learned IRB along with me! As an update, it looks like the weekend visit is a prospective student visit for the entirety of the Graduate School, not just MTS. However, I'm not sure how that means for programs that apparently haven't started sending notifications yet!
  16. FWIW, this looks to be possibly more true of the Rhetoric and Public Culture (RPC) track than MTS. It looks like MTS has more classes in research methods and requires training in responsible conduct of research, complying with NIH and NSF requirements. Still, an important thing to keep in mind considering that I come admittedly come from a weak methods background and definitely need additional training...
  17. @fuzzylogician Man, you always have great advice. I'd heart react this but I'm out of reacts for the day ;_;
  18. So I was invited to an in-person interview visit that'll consist of a dinner, a full day of meetings, and then morning activities. When I received the invitation, I asked the DGS (who sent the email) if there would be a schedule ready beforehand, so I would be better prepared. He basically said not to expect one but did indicate that he wanted to make sure I was able to meet my POI. I'm planning on following up again a week before the visit and have been doing tons of research on my POI, but in the hopefully off chance that I show up with no concrete knowledge of my schedule, what would be the best way to prepare w/o having to memorize every faculty member and current student's CV?
  19. @Ian Han Nothing new on NYU, but I'd say it's unlikely if we haven't been contacted at this point. :\
  20. Are you most likely going to turn down their offer or 100% without a doubt? If you're just most likely, then yes, it's worth going. It's a good idea to take the opportunity to learn all that you can about every program you're considering so you can make an informed decision. If there's no chance in hell you'll accept their offer, then no, don't go just to network and use their funding package to negotiate with other schools. That's disingenuous.
  21. @E-P Wow, way to take the wind out of my sails ?
  22. @fuzzylogician I'm interviewing in March, which is pretty late in the admissions cycle and I expect to have heard back from everywhere else by then. At this point, it's not looking good, other than the place I'm interviewing at. How would you handle this question if it comes up? Aside from disappointment/embarrassment, I'm worried it'll make me look less competitive to admit that I've been rejected from everywhere else (assuming that ends up being the case).
  23. Hi! I'm late to this thread. I'm the person who applied to Comm Studies and was invited to interview with MTS instead. (I think I was confused by their website and didn't realize they were different programs until the week before the deadline. My prospective adviser is MTS, and not in Rhetoric.) I don't know much about the program (other than what's available publicly online) or the campus visit (other than the dates), but I assume all invites have gone out by now.
  24. Do you mean if the school officially invited you to interview, or if you were scheduling an unofficial visit? Official visits--I would ask up front if they didn't clarify in the invitation. If they are not reimbursing, I wouldn't travel for an interview. Unofficial visits--not normal to be reimbursed at all, regardless of whether you're accepted or not.
