To clarify, I am talking about discrimination for admissions -- and maybe this doesn't happen in all STEM fields, but it certainly does in math. Take a male candidate's application, change nothing but the gender, and they would have a whole new tier of schools accessible to them.
Again, I don't think anyone who is familiar with this would contend that math grad schools don't have this (fully intentional) bias. My question is more whether or not it is justified.

I don't see any empirical evidence to support your claim, to be honest.

Here is another calculator that shows state tax impact of the proposed House bill.  Although it doesn't consider university provided health care taxable.

They hope to get a bill signed into law before Christmas.  A "holiday gift for America" per the current White House occupant.  It is correct that the version that passed the Senate does not have the tuition waiver taxation in it, and I think it also retains the Lifetime Learning Credit.  They will start work on reconciliation with the bill the house passed this weekend, I think.  No telling how long it will take or what form the final bill will take.  Sometimes the House just decides to accept the Senate's version of the bill rather than try to hammer out a bill that they can agree on in both houses.  So that could happen here.  It is still a huge wealth transfer from the middle class to corporations and the 1% ($12.9 billion flowing from one to another by 2027), so either way it will likely hit almost all of us.  But the immediate decimation of graduate education MIGHT be avoided.

Here is a calculator some grad students put together.  If you dig into the details and links in the calculator, it is pretty useful to see the possible impact.

One thing I wasn't aware of before is that depending on how your university provides health insurance, your taxes apparently could go up on that as well.  If some or all of the cost is considered part & parcel of your tuition waiver, you aren't current taxed on that extra cost.  But if it is outside that, I guess we already pay tax (I'm a first year, haven't seen a W-2 yet, so am not certain).  So that could be another tax increase for some students.  MIT is the example where there would be an increase for the health insurance.
No one really knows what is in the bill that they are voting on at this moment.  I haven't heard that the tuition waiver tax made it into the Senate version, but can't be sure.  And reconciliation could still add it in.

It is frustrating that not ONE Republican Senator seems to have made a statement standing up for higher education.  You'd think that something the US leads the world in is something they would want to preserve.  17 of the top 25 ranked universities in the world are in the US and rely on this system of TAs & RAs to support research and help educate undergraduates.
The bill continues to roll forward, with amendments being offered in the Senate tomorrow, and a vote as early as tomorrow night.  Then the bill will go to reconciliation (unless the House decides to accept the Senate version, which at this moment does not appear to tax tuition waivers, but that could change at any time, and no one has the full text of the bill at the moment).  After reconciliation it has to be voted on again by both chambers, then goes to the president for signature.

I just finished my sign, heading out tomorrow to join the march for part of the morning.  I can't stay the whole time, but I think this is an important safety issue for us as teachers at universities just as it is for high school students.  I really want to encourage these high school students to keep at this and help make a change.   Anybody else going in their city?

Obvious troll. On the fact that Stanford is theoretical and probability focused, it is important to note that all tenure-track positions in mathematics are only 15% female. I don't see you claiming the entire field of mathematics is sexist. (Also, a good plurality of women in math are international, which you think are sub-human, so maybe the ratio is even lower).
Research grants are designed to produce the best quality research, not to satisfy some US-supremacist wet dream. Are you a nationalist? You sound very xenophobic and hateful towards people who didn't happen to be born in this country.
I'm also not sure where you're getting the information that those students at Stanford are international. I see many East Asian style names, but they could very well be U.S. citizens. What is with this racist assumption? That sounds very much like a statement from a disgusting human being to me.
If you hate Asian people so much, you will struggle to find a place in a stat department.

My wife and I (who met in Davis) found these statements were silly.

Davis is a socially liberal place. Sure, you'll have to drive an hour to the Castro Street Fair, but I can't imagine your sexuality ever being an issue there. If you want gay bars, you'll have to go to Sacramento or San Francisco, but if you're happy drinking with straight people, you'll be fine. It's a non-issue.

I'm from the midwest, but have spent a good deal of time in Syracuse. Town-gown relations (that is the relationship between the city and the school) are mediocre, as is normal, I guess. The school is about three miles east of the city center in a neighborhood that used to be very rich and upscale. This makes it feel isolated, but it really isn't.

I'm staying another mile and a half north-east of the school, and although there aren't any students here, both the school and downtown are accessible by bike. The school is near a large park that was bequeethed to the city by one of these rich former citizens, Thornden Park, and is near the artsy Wescott Street area. Otherwise, around the school the area is either students or relatively poor people (there are even a couple abandonned projects). Thorndon Park is nice, there is sledding and jogging there, as well as pretty gardens. Wescott, also, is cool, as is seperate from the bar scene, I think, so you can go there and get away from the undergrads for a dinner.

The University is, I think, very liberal. There are lots of speakers and events that cater to the hippy set. There is some diversity, but more in the neighborhoods on the east side and on the southwest side of town than on the campus. The mosque, if you are muslim, is conservative. The black churches are great. The Catholic churches are nice too. I don't know about temple, but there are fewer Jews here than in the bigger east coast cities. The town seems liberal, but there are quite a few suburbanites, mall goers, and even some SUV drivers.

Downtown Syracuse is great, and easily accessible by bike. There are a few streets that are better for going by bike, and downtown is worth going to. Also, so long as you aren't to far east, the town is relatively flat. The city has a population of something over 200k, but its metro is like 800k. It feels about the same size as Omaha, but has better busses than that city. Its busses aren't great, though. Crime, here, is a bit higher than in the midwest, esspecially violent crime and weapons related stuff. Near campus and Thorndon Park at night are a bit creepy, but you can feel it and avoid those poorly lit parts. Outside of those areas, there are usually enough people around that you should feel safe enough passing through all night. There are a couple of corners where you shouldn't go after, say, 1:00 am, due to random gun violence.

The people are nice enough, just like everywhere. They honk more than in the midwest. They are also more straightforward, which is actually nice, because, for instance, you and your landlord will have an easy time voicing your complaints, etc. I've found the students to be a bit ruder than in the midwest, so I imagine TA-ing will be a bit more annoying, but that really shouldn't matter much. If you carry yourself like an adult, people in stores and resteraunts are great. And if you are on the east side, and tip decently (18%+) at a regular resteraunt or cofeeshop, you will stand out from the stingy undergraduates, and they will treat you very well. And people who notice that I'm not local are mostly charmed to meet me.

The great part about the area (and most of central NY, including schools in binghampton, ithica, utica, etc), is outside of the city, the state is beautiful. Its old mountains, rolling hills, waterfalls, historic and artistic sights and towns (Seneca Falls, Cooperstown, etc), farms, orchards, skiing, berry picking, hiking, camping, etc. I love the weather, but it is at the intersection of like three different weather patterns or something. If you study meteorology, it might be interesting. There is a lot of rain. There can be a lot of snow, but it isn't bufallo, nor is it northern Minnesota/Wisconsin. There isn't any snow right now. But in the winter, there are some of outdoor places to ice-skate or play hokey.

If you want a big city feel, Syracuse won't bring it. But if you like an established, mid-size town with lots to do, Syracuse is fine. Its 4.5 hours from DC and Boston, a bit less from NYC an Toronto.

If you have any more questions, let me know.

I submitted mine in Mid-January, so I think you're fine (i.e., not for sure rejected). And no, I did not have an interview.
Good luck and stay in touch. I'll be touring the school in early April, so let me know if you have any questions.

Haha, I like them too. Syracuse is a great school so it's nice to know you have something, which is how I feel about UVA. Honestly never thought I had a chance at Northwestern or Columbia. I'm in undergrad right now at a liberal arts college as an econ major, my GRE Q is over 90th percentile but my verbal is atrocious, I have no formal CS background(taking python and java online rn), my GPA is only a 3.6 (major is 3.8) and I've only had one internship in my life which had almost nothing to do with analytics. Research experience is limited to my thesis. So Northwestern is like a dream to me too. I'd go nuts.

Status: accepted to the underlined ones, but Rutgers hasn't given me any information yet I found out my acceptance on the application status website. The waiting is driving me crazy. UI Chicago said they'd give us decisions by last week and lol they didn't.
