  1. Just noticed an AU acceptance that came in today. Does anyone know anything about how AU does their admissions? The admission on the board was for SIS. I applied to the political science department in the School of Public Affairs, and I'm guessing that they are on completely different timeframes in terms of acceptances. Can anybody confirm that?
  2. Chiming in on the nature of the interview at George Washington. It was done over the phone with the Americanist on the admissions committee (I applied as an Americanist). It was relatively brief, and the interviewer asked clarifying questions about my writing sample and my research interests. I spent several hours preparing for the interview and answered the questions honestly, although I could tell some of the stuff I told him wasn't exactly what he wanted to hear. The interview was far from a cakewalk. I came away with the feeling that I was one of a handful of people they were considering, and that they hadn't decided on me yet. A few days later, I got wait listed. I hope this helps others in the same situation -good luck to all!
  3. Maryland is probably around mid-February, based on previous years. If I remember correctly, Georgetown should be around the same timeframe (could be a bit earlier or later- I haven’t looked at it in a while). You can check the results page for previous years at your schools to find more info. Good luck!
  4. That’s just what I was told by a member of the faculty. They let in 2 behavior and 2 institution students each year.
  5. I’m waitlisted at 1. Still waiting on responses from all the others. Trying to be patient!
  6. Yeah- I didn’t get mine until this week. The professor I talked to in my interview told me that the IR and comparative acceptances went out last week (30 slots) and the American acceptances were going to go out this week (4 slots). So that explains why most of the letters went out in one big batch and the smaller batch came a week later. I’m wondering if some of the other schools do the same thing- that might explain some of the confusion I’m seeing on the boards this morning.
  7. I got waitlisted at GW. It was on the portal at around midday today. Generic letter (I thought it was a rejection at first until I re-read it). No email.
  8. What's your specialty? At some of the schools you listed, that can make a difference.
  9. (1) sign up for a half-ironman so that I'm too busy training to be sad (2) keep working and figure out how to do this research without the support of a university, I guess.
  10. ...the tough listen to Billy Ocean? Sorry, I can't hear the first part of that phrase without thinking of that song. But in all seriousness - I usually go for a run, too.
  11. I've been doing my day job, working out a lot, and trying not to stress out too much (sometimes I am successful). Man, what I wouldn't give to live in the Caribbean - you can go outside! It was 11 degrees when I woke up this morning.
  12. I just did a phone interview with someone on the admissions committee at GW, so all is not lost for those waiting to hear from them! He said the last few acceptances will get sent out in the next few days.
  13. Thank you! That's very helpful and makes me feel lot less anxious. As a side note, I'm not generally a very anxious person, but this 8 week waiting process is tough!
  14. I would have done the exact same thing. The email sounded like an invitation, so why not? I just received an email from one of my schools about an interview - we're talking at 5:30 this evening! Any suggestions, since you've just been through this process? What types of questions did the DGS ask you?
  15. I was just contacted by one of my schools for an interview. Someone on the admissions committee wants to talk this evening about my research interests and background. Any general advice on how to prepare? I'm fairly well-versed in my POI's research and have a good handle on how to talk about my research interests, but is there anything else that might come up? I'm trying not to panic, so any words of wisdom would be much appreciated!
  16. Congrats to those who got in yesterday! According to one of the results posters, GW sent out 30 acceptances yesterday. That’s probably everybody they’ll accept for this year, right?
  17. Thanks, guys - this is really helpful. Wow, mid-July is a lot earlier than I expected. It sounds like once I hear back from schools, I may need to press them on what they have planned in terms of summer schedules. If I end up getting in, I'll be an older student with teenage kids' calendars that are outside my control, so it will help if I can plan ahead.
  18. Worries: I'm applying to school after 20 years working in the field that I want to study. I'm worried that I won't fit in since I have a lot of time working on the practical side. I'm worried that I'll either act like a know-it-all, or on the flipside nobody will take me seriously since I basically spent half a career as a political hack (that's what we political consultants lovingly call each other). I can't relocate at the moment, so I only applied to 4 schools. I'm worried that I won't get into any of them. Excitement: I love my research subject, and I'm really excited to work with some of the professors in my area who are doing interesting work in areas aligned with my research interests. I've missed being in school and am excited to go back (even though it's been a while).
  19. Yes, I realize this is putting the cart waaaaay before the horse - should have said that earlier. I'm a planner, what can I say? Thanks for the input!
  20. Very helpful - thank you! I googled the same thing for the schools I've applied to (Maryland, Georgetown, GW, and AU), and see a few oblique references to map camps on ABD student resumes, but nothing specifically addressing dates or details from the schools themselves. All four schools have their first day the week of August 26. Do you think it's safe to assume that things will start up after August 10? We're trying to squeeze in one last week at the beach before school starts.
  21. Hi there, stranger . And thanks! I actually wouldn't mind spending a few weeks brushing up on math since it's been an age since I've taken a math class. Just trying to figure out what to expect in terms of time commitment. Two weeks is totally doable.
  22. While I'm sitting here in purgatory, waiting for responses from schools, I've been thinking about what my summer is going to look like. I've seen a few references to summer math programs that, I'm guessing, would take place the summer prior to enrollment in a political science PhD program. Can anyone shed light on whether this is a thing that programs require? I'm an older applicant with school-aged kids, so I'm trying to figure out what types of commitments are likely before August 2019 and how I might fit them in with other commitments (assuming I get in somewhere, of course!)
  23. Over the past 10 years, I've picked up triathlon as a hobby, but I expect I probably won't have time for that during school. I'm hoping to still have time to swim and run - they are my therapy.
  24. This is putting the cart waaaay before the horse since I haven't gotten in anywhere yet, but I've been wondering about commitments during the summer before starting a PhD program. Are there other activities prior to mid/late August that I should be thinking about before the semester starts that schools might expect new students to attend? An orientation? Some sort of pre-class assignment or workshop? I'm applying in political science if that helps clarify things.
  25. Hi there - Political behavior is my area as well. I'm a newbie, so somebody more experienced could correct me if I'm wrong, but in my experience, most of the programs include behavior in their American program with a subspecialty in Methods. It's kind of hard to tell which programs specialize in it unless you look through the American faculty bios and look at their research topics.
