Hi!!! Has anyone heard back from University of Victoria following interviews?

I'm still waiting! My POI said they would let me know if I was waitlisted if I didn't receive an offer and I haven't heard anything yet. They did say decisions were going to be made by Friday (yesterday). I'm not sure if that was pushed back for whatever reason.

  2. I leave for an in-person Open House tomorrow. I am printing off my CV just in case anyone asks for it. I want to print it double sided for enviro-friendly reasons. Google says it's a no go, but I'm really passionate about eco-friendly initiatives so I am leaning towards double-sided despite the warnings not to. Thoughts?

    Thanks!

Edit: my CV is 6 pages ?

I hate group interviews, because you do not have the ability to build rapport. It's more of a rapid fire question and answer period. I would suggest attempting to speak first once or twice, but don't try and dominate by answering first every time. Try to use other students name if you have an answer similar to them (i.e. "Similar to ____, I also find cognitive behavioral therapy to be the most intriguing"). Helps to make you look more sociable. This should be obvious, but never try to one-up the other people. From what I've heard, group interviews are more about how you interact with the others rather than your actual answers. Don't take this time to brag about your achievements, rather just try to give thoughtful answers. Hope this helps!

Thank you! Would you happen to remember any specific questions that were asked?

Throwing this out there one more time: does anyone have experience with/ tips for group interviews? I have a group skype interview and have no idea what to expect. I wasn't given the option of an in-person interview.

I would also be interested in hearing any experience people have had. I have an in-person group interview coming up!

    Thank you.

I am incredibly fortunate to be in this position, but I will say it is validating after multiple prior rounds (3 and then a year where I applied to only one school) to finally be doing this all right somehow.

I am also fortunate to be in a financial and employment situation which is allowing me to do this travel.  I will be attending 10 out of 11 interviews (hoping for 11/12, come on UIUC) because I need to get this right.  I have been advised to take as many interviews as possible, even if I initially think a place will be a worse fit/location/etc. because so much rides on just what feels right

I was unable to fit the 11th in my schedule (either scheduled date or any alternates) and completed a Skype interview.

I cannot complain because again, I really acknowledge how privileged I am, but I will say that I am running on coffee and clif bars.

That's amazing! Happy it is working out for you and you are able to make most of them. You should do a blog post or something on what you did this time around compared to previous cycles. It might help out a few people. :)  And again, congrats!!

Haha I am also running on coffee and cliff bars.

  6. I have a question about replying to interview invites. I was emailed by the graduate coordinator and my POI, the DCT, and another prof were CC'd. Should I "reply all" to my response? I know this seems trivial and I'm over thinking it, but I just wanted to see what others did in the same situation.

I received an email from a POI at UBC-O informing me that he has compiled a list of applicants and is currently reviewing them. He said the department will be providing more information (i.e. interview invites) in early February. Hope this helps, best of luck!!

Hey! Out of curiosity, did they email you out of the blue or did you email them to inquire about the status of your application and that is how they responded?

    Thank you!

  8. For those who have been to Open House type interviews, what sort of preparation did you do? I plan to be really familiar with my POI's current lab projects. However, I like to be extra prepared for things, so I was going to read up on everyone in the psych department (the department is relatively small) to have an idea of what everyone does. When talking to faculty I want to be able to hold a conversation and discuss their current research.

Anything else you did to prepare? Or any tips for this kind of interview? I will be meeting all psych faculty and grad students and there will be a social event as well.

Okay, what? Dal has already contacted their first choice students?! If so I'm absolutely gutted, it was by far my best shot...

Also if anyone has applied to Calgary, you should be emailed about the open house by next Friday (the 16th).

I agree about Dal. I have not heard from them and I thought I had a good chance of at least receiving an interview.

For Calgary, are you talking about clinical or counselling? I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I'm pretty sure all invites for clinical went out on Wednesday. I may be wrong, but usually when it's a mass email, it's sent to everyone within the same day. Where did you get that info?

I went to three interview weeks last year and the makeup choices of other applicants was something I did not notice - which probably means that no one was wearing anything too heavy! For myself, I wore foundation, eyebrow pencil, eyeshadow, and mascara, but only used one eyeshadow palate that is matte and in different tones of beige and brown. Overall, I was going for a "no-makeup makeup look" and I definitely didn't feel out of place.

Lipstick might be a little too much unless it's a very natural tone and you're comfortable wearing it in your daily routine outside of interviews (I usually notice lipstick and I can't say it was commonly worn by other applicants). A tinted lip balm or tinted lip gloss may be a better option. Just my opinion, though! :)

    Thank you!

    Hi folks,

A friend of mine told me about this site and that people keep others posted about their progress in applying for clinical grad programs.

I applied at Dalhousie, UVic, and UBC. I was invited for a skype interview at Dal with my supervisor of choice in early December (one of three total applicants for this supervisor). They acknowledged this was quite early, and that Dal requires that faculty make their decisions quickly. This faculty told me that first rounds of offers go out some time in January. I've yet to hear back from them, or anything from the other schools. I imagine most others are in this boat as well.

For those trying to get a sense of where other applicants are at, this is a summary of my application:

    M.A. Experimental Psychology (2020)
    GRE: 93% Verbal, 83% Quant, 92% Writing
    CGPA: Undergrad: 88%, Grad: 90%+
Pubs: 1 manuscript under review, 3 manuscripts in preparation

Seems worth noting that although these things matter to get in the door, idiosyncrasies in applicant-supervisor fit likely account for the lion's share of the variance in acceptance rates.

    Best of luck out there.

Congrats on your interview at Dal! I have heard that they are extending invites during Jan, but not by any specific date. I think it's POI specific. Best of luck!
