Apparently UNC isn’t done making decisions, and all final decisions will go out at least two weeks before April 15th. So if you haven’t heard back yet, don’t lose hope!

I finally had the call with UCSC and am so happy to say I've been accepted!!
I should have known with the email saying they wanted to talk, but with how the season has gone I had so much doubt. I am ecstatic!

I took a gap year after my first round of applications (to MAs alone - none of which were even funded Good god) and got into my dream school. It’s a top ten and in the city I was living in at the time and it felt like everything was falling into place. I felt like I’d won the lottery; I spoke to professors, toured campus, bought the obligatory sweatshirt, listened to Heaven is a Place on Earth on a loop, but when it came time for me to take out my loans through FAFSA, I couldn’t do it. I was looking at paying back approximately $130k in loans and interest over the course of thirty years for an MA that would last one single year. I had been lucky enough to have been granted a full ride in undergrad and the realization of what the cost of the MA would be didn’t really hit until the night I was applying for loans. I spoke to my best friends, my family, and my professors. I cried a lot. My family thought I was being stupid, but my friends and professors supported me, convinced that I could get into the PhD programs I thought were out of my league.
So I took the year off. I spoke with professors on skype and over email, I conducted independent research, wrote a whole new writing sample reflecting my new interests, developed a new personal statement, and it paid off. I would not have developed my current research interests if it hadn’t been for my previous application cycle. I learned so much and now have six acceptances to fully funded programs.
All this to say, sometimes the first journey is practice for the next one, but also: if it’s not funded, don’t do it.
(Edit: I didn’t even apply to the “dream school” in my second round because the fit was definitely not it. I wouldn’t have been in a position to make such a call in the first round.)

Okay... looking back over my SOP, and where I meant to type "British" I typed "Brititish." I just wish my typo didn't sound so dirty.

Bumping this because I feel like there's a lot of good advice and might be helpful to folks in the next month or so.

I received a second rejection from Victoria this morning. Seems odd that they have two? I am guessing one is automatic. It also came with this great tautology:
"Your application for admission to the University of Victoria has been carefully considered. We regret to inform you that your application has been refused for the following reason:
The Department of English has reviewed your file and cannot offer you admission."
    Enjoy!

Soooo someone else on the admissions results page has already brought it up, but has anyone gotten any rejections from UNC-Chapel Hill yet? Or like any notification after February 20? Kind of curious and baffled by their radio silence rn considering everyone of the other U.S. programs I've applied to have communicated much earlier.

thank you too much for your advise! I applied to two Masters programs( one of them in the same school I did my undergrad) and im expecting to get any decisions after March 15 so im just waiting now. I will talk it out with my advisor and see what she says, it also puts me in a weird position having to ask the same recommenders to go through the process again next year.

Yes. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this process it’s that it needs to be standardized. As a humanities person I know saying that is basically heresy, but it’s true.

Ooooh, like since they impose the April 15 decision deadline, also impose a like March 1 notification deadline or something along those lines. They could also have a national application deadline. That would be really useful across the board. Everyone would be on the same schedule.

I called them early last week and they said they were still making decisions and sending out notifications.  The woman I spoke with on the phone said that acceptances/waitlists would be notified via phone call or e-mail.  She gave no timeline as to when they'd have everything out by, but if you haven't heard yet, don't give up hope as they haven't notified everyone yet (as of last week, at least).

thought this may ease some of your minds: I've been admitted to NYU, CUNY, Rutgers, and Columbia thus far, and accepted Columbia's offer a few days ago. I contacted the admissions department from each of the other schools about my decision yesterday and have received responses from all, so for those waitlisted or especially waiting for responses from Rutgers, spots are opening up! And to future members of my cohort: hello!
