  1. plus you have to shell out for sending GRE scores, so + $27*n. then some schools require official transcripts up front. massive racket.
  2. ? I'm CP --- slide in my dms when things wrap up
  3. I applied to CUNY, JH, and Brown. Have not heard anything yet.
  4. duke anthro offers samples of successful sops https://culturalanthropology.duke.edu/sites/culturalanthropology.duke.edu/files/file-attachments/2011-2012GradStmts_0.doc i like cuny's guide https://www.gc.cuny.edu/CUNY_GC/media/CUNY-Graduate-Center/PDF/Programs/Political Science/Statement_of_Purpose.pdf just found this, which i feel is a solid template https://ls.berkeley.edu/divisions-and-units/social-sciences/graduate-diversity-office/demystifying-application-process/tips political scientists love puzzles. i would front load the stmt with some significant puzzle, situate it in one or two literature strains, suggest a novel intervention then demonstrate why you are uniquely qualified to untangle the research question given past research / coursework (describe) / language training / etc. and how you might think through it w a particular school's resources & faculty to support your proposed intervention. end with specific professional aspirations. an old prof advised me against putting more than one or 1.5 questions / puzzles in the statement or expressing too many research interests. to some committee members, it signals a lack of focus. while i think this is good advice, i ignored this and most adcom wisdom in my statements
  5. I applied to UBC for PhD and am thinking about McGill as well. I think they have MA programs but I know very little about it. UofT is a powerhouse Fit and quality depend on your interests imo. You might consider American ones that offer partial / full scholarships. I know many write MA apps til their hands bleed, but I only sent out one and it ended up ok. 3-5 seems like a good set.
  6. age doesn't matter on the low end. even if the profs in your dept cannot take you on, you can ask them to intro you to someone who is hiring research assistants. not taking calc sequence won't make a major hit, but if you were to take it and do well it would be a positive signal for your app. most schools have 'math camps' before and quant sequences, so they are just looking for indicators, not necessarily that you have the experience already in hand. good quant gre or a quant ra ship should get you sorted. best if writing sample doesnt have coauthors. most important advice i could offer would be to take a breath & don't rush into it. see the world. raise chickens for a year. start a garden. market is brutal and you will be overworked and underpaid. and if you do go for the phd always keep exit paths in the back of your mind.
  7. i'll let yall know when the berkeley rejection letters come in

    Chicago, IL

anywhere nearby is ok. bridgeport / bronzeville are nice. south loop / chinatown will be more expensive & outside your radius but popular spots.
  9. many apps also allow space to give context for poor academic performance / extenuating circumstances. some also ask if you took a gap / had anything irregular on your record, and if you click yes, there is a text box to elaborate. you can also upload a statement in the additional documents section elaborating what happened, how your academic trajectory changed, and why you are now prepared for a graduate degree. schools such as michigan, jh (i think), and so on require personal statements, and this will give you an opportunity to reframe the grades. i would recommend putting as much context as you can, as many schools are looking for an excuse to ding applicants and low gpas and low gres tend to be among the first wave. if these bad grades were before you declared a major or outside your major requirements, that will work in your favor, as there are a couple of schools that ask you to calculate major gpa.
  10. if it were me, instead of spending 50k to go through the weird cycle again, i'd do ND since it's a good fit then aim for a nice postdoc after.
  11. I emailed a prof and asked to RA. Then I got hired. So, just reach out I guess? Ask the professors you are close with if they know anyone who needs an RA and just email them?
  12. I'm in a Chicago MA program. If anyone is curious about the program, feel free to slide into my DMs.
  13. I struck out this round. 0/6. *solidarity emoji* to those reapplying next year
  14. I wouldn't lose hope just yet. If you can't get feedback from schools you applied to about your application, you might have people who sit / have sat on admissions committees look over your statement if you have to reapply. They would probably be the best ones to ask if there is some glaring mistake. Apparently there is a certain formula and language of writing these things, which I was not totally aware of when I applied.
  15. That's about the same average rent in Hyde Park, with an approximate +/- $200 depending on how nice a place you want. Austin Carson is no slouch either.
  16. Paul Staniland and Ben Lessing are excellent
  17. Can second that -- fantastic person. That would make too much sense. While NU admittedly has some administrative quirks, it is definitely underrated and has many brilliant faculty and grad students. Sucks that you're still sitting in admissions purgatory, though.
  18. To be fair to NU, I think the DGS is still away on fieldwork and has many other administrative responsibilities across other departments.
  19. As I understand it, they ask professors and deans to rank schools on a scale of 1-5. That's it. One question. Yet that score still seems to matter more than the professors you work with for success on the market. So it may be 'accurate' to a degree for placement, but I would be skeptical if it corresponded to quality of instruction, scholarship, and so on.
  20. Rejected from CP @ MIT & Michigan.
  21. Princeton Comparative rejection
  22. Yes. More than most other US programs it seems. CIR gives a non-trivial number of full scholarships (worth approximately $60k). They also give a significant number of partial scholarships (20k+). Plus the program is only one year.
