Should I find a new major?
SLP2019isHere replied to Penelopepie's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Please do not be discouraged... you have 2 years left and you sound motivated to continue to work hard! I was an out of field applicant, i did my pre reqs online at Longwood University. My Overall undergrad GPA SUCKED!! It was a 2.91. My Major GPA was a 3.3 (again this is in a different major) After taking pre reqs my CSD GPA was only a 3.52 ( a lot of people have 4.0) I applied my first round and got rejected from 4 schools. I applied the second time around and was accepted to 2/8 schools. My GRE's were super low compared to anyone. Writing score was very average (3.0 or 3.5). During the time I was rejected I completed some shadowing hours, also got a job taking care of a little boy who has some special needs and ended up working with him for a year. By then I had about 40 SLP hours that could be used in my application. I believe these 2 things helped me with my application, also my Letter of intent/ essay was, in my opinion, amazing lol. If you can, bring up your GPA, try your best on the GRE's and try and shadow early. It will make things a lot easier in the long run and of course pray ❤️ Just PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Do not give up if this is something that you want! -

Hi! I actually applied to all of my schools before December and was requested to interview in February. (It was a while until I was requested to interview) as you know you have to mail everything in and I did but I think I mailed to the wrong building but they eventually got it). I interviewed on March 7th I believe and didnt hear back until like 2-3 weeks later but it was also because they were on spring break so it took a little long. From what I understand they make a decision immediately and then the Graduate school generates a letter. The faculty was super super nice! Have you interviewed yet? Is this your number 1 choice? or are you waiting for other schools, or is this like a backup plan I am so glad someone else is hoping to get in! lol I know since it is early I dont expect other people to post their stats but I fell like I am alone in this cohort (dramatic lol) Feel free to message me if you have questions!!

That what is hindering my decision honestly... I was accepted to UDC in Washington, DC and if I went with Governors State it would take me an extra 2 semesters to complete. UDC is public, and costs the same as GSU. So I have been stuck on what I should do!!

Has anyone heard anything about UDC ( university of the District of Columbia) program for SLP? I can only find old info and it is not positive but the info is from like 10 years ago.

When to give up? SLP Grad School

Listen, if it is your passion go for it! My GRE scores were way way way lower than yours lol. There are a few schools that dont even look at GRE. One school I was accepted to was Governors State and there is no GRE required. Cal state at san marco also doesnt require GRE. i believe a school in Texas also doesnt require a GRE. Thankfully I am Grateful that I was accepted to two schools this year and I promise you my GRE Stats were extremely low. so low, casper the ghost might as well have taken that test for me. Also my overall GPA was low and barely hit the requirement. my CSD GPA was pretty avg i felt. 3.52. your welcome to message me if you want advice or I can share what schools I applied to. Best of luck ❤️- 78 replies

I would take the NYU option. great school and seems to have a great program. Also, I heard NYU find placements for you so that might let go a little bit of stress

I know this post is old but I always try to do the mot research as possible before making a decision. I just had an interview and the professors were super nice. How do you like the campus and the program? I am independent so I don't think this would be the program. Also I wouldn't even know where to live hahaha! I am excited as I hope to be accepted despite negative reviews. you have to experience things on your own.
