school? Ive been thinking the same thing, was hoping to hear from Yale this week (similar to past years). Although I know that Yale, and many other schools, postponed the start of their semester by 2 weeks because of COVID. I imagine that would delay us for a similar amount of time -

Just got the notification for Interview Day as well!

I would say MSCAPP absolutely prepares you to be a data scientist. Strong training in statistics, computing and machine learning, and interpreting data for non-technical audiences. We are fully integrated with the CS department at UChicago. Data science itself is interdisciplinary-- if you are looking to go into software engineering or UI/UX maybe it makes less sense (although I know people doing this from CAPP as well).

If you don't add to diversity then you don't add to diversity. These sections of the applications primarily exist for people from under represented and under served backgrounds to explain that without using precious lines in their research statement to do so. These are not necessarily sections for you to create an argument about how you as a white guy add diversity. Diversity also comes in many forms, for example I did not submit anything for most of my apps for optional statements, but for Yale I did because I actually taught middle school in New Haven for several years and am very attached to the community. That to me is diversity because there are not many Yale students that feel strongly attached to the community of New Haven and involve themselves with the public schools and volunteering scene. Also not totally sure what you mean about the leaning left comment... these *optional* essays are not gotchas for white dudes. Don't force something thats not there at the end of the day essays matter less than everything else -

Its going! Currently working through my essays a few more times before submitting a few. I can't wait for this to be over. My top 3 are Yale, Columbia, and NYU. My partner is at Yale and so the closer I am to New Haven the better. @PhD22Plz what are yours? -

Location was pretty important to me-- my partner is on the east coast so I can't really be anywhere else. My research interests are in healthcare operations and optimization and so I had to narrow to programs that had faculty doing that work. Which gets kinda tricky in some schools, for instance at HBS, they have an OM program but because they also have a pretty large health policy program all the faculty doing this work are more likely to be in that program. Whereas Columbia school of public health doesnt have a PhD program in health policy/managment so the OM program at CBS has more faculty focusing on health systems. Although again some schools, like Cornell, do not have a health policy/management program and have very few faculty doing health systems research in the Cornell Johnson OM program. It has been very difficult to say the least to actually find programs that were a good fit -

Oh wow thats a lot! I could see myself doing more if I wasn't limiting myself geographically to the east coast. What is your background? -

Fair. I am planning on applying to the following programs: Yale SOM: Operations Columbia Business School: Decision, Risk, and Operations NYU Stern: Operations Management I am limited geographically to the east coast which is why I am not applying to other schools. My research interests are within empirical healthcare operations and medical decision analysis. While it seems like sort of an odd fit for business school, I am applying to these specific schools because of the faculty in the department doing similar research-- unfortunately not all of the operations management programs at top business schools in on the east coast have people doing this work. My background: Undergraduate degree in economics and mathematics. Masters degree (2022) in computer science and public policy. Letters of recommendation should be pretty strong-- two relatively famous health economists and a health services researcher (whom I am currently co-authoring with) who I have very good relationships with and have worked as a research analyst with. GRE: 157 V/ 168Q/ 5.0 AWA (I took it two years ago and am deciding not to retake) I have been debating whether or not I should reach out to faculty I am interested in working with-- I hear mixed reviews on this and I know it varies by disciplines. I've found though in general economists tend to find this behavior more annoying. And at some of the programs, like NYU OM, faculty do not advise you until after your first year so it seems sort of pointless. -

Hey! We started a thread the other day if you want to move your post -
Hello everyone! I have seen a thread for Business PhD applicants in previous years and thought that we should start one for this year! I am planning on applying to programs in Operations Management this Fall at: Yale SOM (Operations) Columbia Business School (DRO) NYU Stern (OM) I am limited geographically so I am hoping to end up in the Northeast

I want to say that NYU has an actual MS in Data Science. Georgetown also has a policy/data science program and I think Penn does too. I am going to appear bias here because I am a UChicago CAPP, but MSCAPP I believe is the best program out there for policy and data science. MACSS at UChicago is honestly pretty good too, but I think funds are more limited and if there are any interesting MACSS classes you want to take you can just take them as an MSCAPP student. CMU PPM-DA is pretty good too, not as good as MSCAPP, but generally gives a lot more money. I think that many students I know find themselves in the dilemma of choosing between MSCAPP and PPM-DA with more money.

Hello all, I am wondering if anyone is planning on applying to health policy or health services research PhDs? I am currently planning on applying to the following programs. I am not sure what the background of typical applicants to these programs look like-- I have a B.A. in economics/mathematics and finishing my M.S. in computer science and public policy. I have been working as an RA at the intersection of social science/health for a while so I am hoping that is enough to establish my credibility in my applications.

Thanks for starting this! I would love to be part of a forum with others in this boat!
