meghan_sparkle reacted to WildeThing in so... are english stipends *actually* livable? or do people have to work second jobs?
If you’re in the same situation then you should make sure to have several thousands of buffer money to bring with you. The first stipend might take a while and you need to be able to live that first few days/weeks/month. Not to mention deposits for housing, health insurance for your partner, and VISA costs. Everyone needs a buffer but as an international student it is even more true.

After getting home from work at 4am, I violently woke at 8am to check my phone thinking "Princeton Princeton PrincetonPRINCETON!!!!" as if the odds of them notifying on a Sunday were higher than the more likely, and more reasonable, possibility of Monday ? I truly cannot wait to wake up without the waiting feeling. I truly cannot wait to wake up thinking about ONE school and a definite move and a definite program. I can't wait to be institutionally monogamous! Here's hoping this is the last week I have to spend with potential rejection as my constant companion, and maybe I can finally just feel excited. It takes so much courage and so much hard work to even get to the point of submitting a strong application to PhD programs, and my first acceptance was from my top choice! That is very cool! I did it!!! But I can't even be fully stoked because I'm not fully done getting rejected yet! WHAT AN UNHOLY PROCESS THIS IS PLEASE LAWD LET THIS BE THE WEEK
The solidarity of this forum has been wicked helpful and I probably would have gone insane without it/y'all. As nervous I am about rejections, I am ~so~ excited to see what acceptances y'all get!
Congratulations on your UW offer! I just finished my undergrad there in December and the English Department is so hella wonderful. I've also lived in Seattle for my whole life should you (or anyone) have any questions.

For work , I had to call one of my POIs at an institution I still haven't heard from on Friday (not going to say which for obvious reasons but didn't have anything to do w/admissions obvs) and at the end of the call she said "I have a feeling we're going to be speaking again very soon" and sorta laughed. I was so flustered and confused I ended up saying "Oh, alright, um, bye" and hung up on her and then I screamed "OH NO...OH GOD....FUCK". Tact, grace, gratitude. Love that for me.

This really hurts my heart to read, and I know it's unlikely that advice from an internet stranger will affect your decision: but please, please don't forsake the incredible funded PhD options you have in the US because your partner got shut out/has a ND waitlist. It's none of my business at all so please ignore me if this out of turn, but it's hard to forget what you said in an earlier post about you making sure you applied to multiple schools in the vicinity of places your partner was applying, but it seems this wasn't something they did for you. Your career is just as important as your relationship, and there's no guarantee you'd have the same offers next year if you reapplied. (I say this as someone who stayed in Oxford in large part for a long-term relationship! I don't regret it because it worked out for me, even though the relationship ultimately didn't, but it's scary to look back and realized how much I would have turned down for that person. Regardless of what the opportunity turned out to be.) Is it not an option for your partner to move with you and reapply next cycle? Why is it you that would have to turn down your offers and reapply?
Again--sorry to ask tough questions and be impertinent; you are under no obligation to answer them or pay attention at all to me, and I don't want to add weight to your dilemma. I just couldn't not speak up, because you seem like a lovely person who has gotten into programs you only get accepted to when you're terrifyingly smart and formidable.

The Johns Hopkins acceptance letter was the most well-written among the personal acceptances I received. Holy shit.
