2021 Clinical Psychology Applicants CANADA
UroboroS replied to freudianslipintogradschool's topic in Psychology Forum
Curious about #2 and what others think about this. I was told by a supervisor that they don't seriously consider students that haven't at least tried to apply for funding. Applying for external funding shows initiative and more importantly, interest in the program since the main one (cgsm) only allows you to list three schools. It's an easy way to weed out applicants that aren't serious about the program. I have also been told by current grad students that it is super important to show that you've applied for external funding. I am happy to hear that maybe it isn't that important? I applied to many schools and there were I think two I wasn't able to indicate that I applied for funding (ogs not applicable or cgsm I chose for others), and I honestly feel like that brought my app down?- 2,510 replies

Oof that's rough. I honestly have no idea why Dal's app process is so archaic? Why not have a portal like most other programs? I've often wondered how much gets lost in translation there after reading on the results page that someone was interview and accepted in April because their application didn't end up reaching the POI in December. I had a similar issue there with one of my references. Apparently everything was received, but it still seems like a lot of administrative work to compile all of those documents into one application and send it to the POIs. Also seems like an opportunity for unnecessary human error, no shade on the admin team but things happen!- 2,510 replies

^^^ I second this. From my experience, most universities conduct a similar admissions process.- 2,510 replies

Do you mind me asking which school (I won't ask for the POI's name) said that they wouldn't even consider you without a pub? I know many, if not most students who got in without pubs. However they had at least 1 or more presentations. Also, it is SO hard to evaluate an applicants chances for clin psych. The process is so idiosyncratic, some people get in with not much experience but a great match with POI, some people who have pubs, presentations, high GRE etc. don't get it. There's a lot happening behind the scenes we don't see. Like last minute changes to who can accept a student, funding issues, etc. Congrats on your GRE scores by the way. Those are really great and I do feel for you that they aren't being accepted this year because I think that would have really helped your application. Also, how many schools did you apply to? Did you apply for external funding?- 2,510 replies

I did get an email with instructions the day I applied on how to activate my MACID to manage my submitted application. Did you submit on a weekend? In the email it says that if you did, then it may take more time than usual.- 2,510 replies

Fall 2021 Clinical & Counseling PhD/PsyD
UroboroS replied to clinicalpsych.2022's topic in Psychology Forum
Thanks for the input and being able to relate. I didn't say it in my post but, wow I'm having a hard time. My SOP for most schools allow for 2 pages or a 1500 word count. 500 seems unreasonable, especially since I feel I have a lot of research and clinical experience to highlight, let alone my career goals and fit with POI. My original thought was that it was a kind of test to see if the applicant is able to be concise and follow guidelines. Although, I thought maybe being 50 words over or under would be acceptable ? -

If a program asks you to write a statement of intent in 500 words or less, how much over/under do you think is acceptable? -

Is anyone applying to UOttawa? How are your references supposed to upload the "clinical suitability form"? By email? or will it be sent directly to them that they can upload electronically. It seems unclear.- 2,510 replies

While it is great that you achieved high scores, I would advise against this. If the program stated that they are going to remain GRE blind (i.e., not consider scores at all in their evaluation of the applicant), and then you add the scores on your CV, it could be interpreted negatively. For instance, it could imply that you cannot follow instructions, or do not respect that evaluation process. Just my opinion. If the university is "optional" on GRE scores, sending the official report in I think is enough. Adding it to your CV may be redundant/unnecessary.- 2,510 replies

Hi, I think this question is trying to get at whether you are interested in producing a lot of research/pubs outside of your thesis/dissertation. I may be wrong, but when I was asked this question and replied with something along the lines of "I'd like to publish x amount of manuscripts each year/attend conferences/network within my field of research", the prof said, "Ah yes, so you're interested in the more academic centric path in graduate school opposed to some of my other students who are more interested in clinical careers". I think it's a myth that you have you keep your career plans (scientist, practitioner, or both) a secret for all of grad school. This prof seemed to have a very good idea who in his lab wanted to continue on to research careers and who did not. The prof may also want to know what sort of things you want to accomplish or skills you want to acquire in graduate school over and above the program requirements. It may also depend on the prof, but the one I spoke with did seem to acknowledge that I answered their question.- 2,510 replies
