  1. Full disclosure, I only attended the second half due to conflict in schedule. I honestly don't know what I was expecting, but it most certainly was not that. It felt more like those Q&A webinar session where a program runs through what the program is, rather than discuss in detail with the admitted cohort/have new cohort get to know each other. What'd you think?
  2. I think each 'posting' is different. But for the position I applied to (one of the research hospitals in Toronto), they did not look at your marks. Overall, I think the main focus include your resume, skills, and cover letter. Many of these practicum sites conduct an interview (just like any other job interview to learn about why this position, your interests, etc.) I feel if you struggle with eg. Epidemiology, but you are applying to an extremely epidemiology oriented placement, then you might have a difficult time at your practicum.
  3. Yes! DrPH programs! It's been a decently successful cycle and feeling extremely fortunate! Had to step back from this sub as checking in daily for news and updates was really weighing on my sanity. But I was ultimately accepted to 5 programs- Drexel included, had to turn down UColorado as they provided a very tight turnaround time. Did you commit to a program yet?
  4. Regarding the practicums? Because, yes! There's an external practicum list where it's open competition, and an internal practicum list, where the competition is others in your cohort who applied to the same position. I could be wrong, but I believe the PHAC practicums were among the internal listings for practicums (paid).
  5. I can't tell if you're trying to be sarcastic or what. But not once did I say my job is "posh"? But ok. Not here "promoting" the degree, I am clearing up some extremely unwarranted and basically untrue blanket statements that you have made about the program. Like you said, everyone's journey in public health is different. It is ultimately up to each individual to make an informed decision. I came in to provide clarity based on some of your untrue comments, as I am a graduate of the program. Not once did I step in to say I am here to promote the program, but go off.
  6. For sure, it's your prerogative at the end of the day. I mean, the 1 year program made sense as the ROI paid off exceedingly well in my case (and a few others in my cohort as well). Yes, $36k price tag is steep, but paying that for the year wasn't bad as my job I got post grad was able to pay it off, and I was able to enter the workforce a year early in comparison to other MPHers who started the same year I did. That's fair you have doubts, but the program is CEPH accredited, so it meets the rigor and standards of all other accredited MPH programs in the USA/Canada. But again, you are correct, it is ultimately your decision, and you must know what is best in your circumstance. However saying there are doubts about the program, when this is a few of the CEPH accredited programs in Canada is a very lowbrow comment. Just my two cents.
  7. Lol yup, we 1000% had paid practicums, however some 'last minute' placements were unpaid. I would say a good 60% of the advertised internal placements were paid. Only the "smaller" ones or some specific organizations were unpaid. Western has a close knit relationship with PHAC that allowed less competitive practicum placements at Government of Canada. Those positions were all paid, and a few stayed at the organization post practicum and graduation. They are still working with PHAC or the Government of Canada to this day.
  8. Sorry to hear about your friends experiences at Western's MPH. I am not dismissing your concerns or your opinions, but I will outright respectfully disagree with your blanketed statement. I will disclaim that my experience is biased as I am an alumni of the program, however my year had decent job placements post grad, with ~10 folks heading to medical school/dental school. Around 50% of our practicums were paid as well or received a stipend. So I am just providing an "insiders" perspective. For my personal experience, I chose this program because I wanted to do a 1 year program and enter the workforce as soon as possible. I was fortunate to find a very well paying job post MPH grad with no concerns. The networks I've made during my practicum and at the school has been quite helpful for me to date. But again, this is just an anecdotal story.
  9. Congrats! I got the same email but Saturday night! I initially emailed the program and person I spoke to mentioned they were quite behind.
  10. Wow, so this is really interesting. I noticed all Tulanes webpages about the DrPH program were removed and/or taken down. The website has no mention of the DrPH under doctoral programs which I knew was there before. I was confused about how these pages suddenly were missing, so I emailed Tulane’s admissions coordinator around the second week of December about the DrPH program. I asked about the DrPH program, why the website no longer mentions it, etc. All he replied back was one sentence saying “the DrPH admission closed December 1.” I guess some stuff was happening, kinda sketchy how they wouldn’t bring it up to prospective students.
  11. I applied to GW for the DrPH as well, and like you mentioned, their email stated that they will get back in March. Congrats on the BU interview! And best of luck!! I also applied to the BU DrPH program and haven't heard back. I didn't realize they required interviews. When I was researching programs and emailed their program manager, he didn't mention having interviews as part of the admission process so I had no idea it was required! On that note, I heard back from 0/8 DrPH programs I've applied to. No news on any fronts.
  12. Congrats!! So happy to hear you got into the program!! You must be beyond ecstatic and relieved too!
  13. Wow that is a significant increase. It's definitely an intense and more competitive application cycle, I can't imagine the stress for PhD positions. The *only* silver lining/glimmer of hope I see is that many DrPH programs require a masters/MPH of some sort in order to apply. But even so, that doesn't really diminish the number of candidates applying for the schools.
  14. That sounds like a very nice experience! Good to know it's not one of those intensive interviews that's beyond stressful. Did the AdCom mention anything about how many people applied this year/if they received more applications compared to previous years? And honestly fair enough, you know exactly what you want! All my luck and fingers crossed for you! Keep us updated once you hear the good news!
  15. @DrPH Extreme hopeful Oh wow, you submitted your application so early! Props to you for being on top of it and having the motivation to get it in early as possible! I didn't submit my application through SOPHAS until the day of Dec 1 lol. Best of luck on your interview, I hope it went well for you! Is UTHealth one of your top choices for DrPH?
