rainestorm got a reaction from time_consume_me in How do you plan to spend your summer in a more productive manner?
I'm mostly excited to quit my job and do nothing. I've spent the last 3 years working and conducting research non-stop, I could really use a break before starting graduate school! And by "nothing" I mean binge-watch TV shows and try out new restaurants! I was able to figure out housing pretty quickly and already signed a lease. I might have to study a little bit sometime in August to brush up on cell bio, genetics concepts and neuroanatomy but other than that, I want to relax ?

Got rejected from everywhere for PhD programs, but Brandeis rolled my application over to their Neuroscience Masters and I got accepted immediately. Probably because I was waitlisted there, and there's some kind of fast-track for waitlisted candidates to the master's program - smart on their part! Not exactly what I was hoping for (or even expecting), but hell, I'll take it. Hopefully this means I'll have a better shot 1-2 years from now (depending on if I do a Master's Thesis, which I probably will...).
FWIW: I graduated with a B.S. in psychology with a focus on neuroscience in 2010, and have been a software engineer since 2012. This has been a long and weird path, for sure. But in it for the long haul!

rainestorm got a reaction from Dr.EJM in Too soon to accept an offer?
First, congratulations on the acceptance! Second, there's no point in playing hard to get, just accept the offer if you already know you want to accept it! Personally, I accepted my offer a few minutes after receiving it haha.
You could always ask and see if the offer is negotiable, doesn't hurt to ask I think

I definitely agree with that, having conversations with potential advisors is great. They love to be asked about their research.
While I agree that prestige matters in the grand scheme of things, I was trying to emphasize that one shouldn't apply to a school because of how prestigious it is, nor should they gauge their likelihood of being accepted based on that. It's definitely a bonus if you get into a prestigious school!

Generally, schools will send you the schedule the day before or 2 days before the interview. I've always gotten my schedule the day before interviews start!

Does anyone know how competitive interviews will be this year?
I've received 10 invites so far, but decided to decline three offers because I'm still waiting to hear back from a few other programs and juggling a full-time job.
Do I have a chance with seven interviews? Starting to freak out ?

I think UMinn might be done, they only have one interview weekend and already sent out interview invites to applicants who passed their second round of review.
I haven’t heard anything from Emory yet. Based on the results page, I feel like they’re done sending out invites as well but you never know!

I received an interview invite from WashU DBBS Neuro on December 18th. They have 2 interview weekends so they're probably still sending out invites?

I applied two years ago, got 2 interviews and was rejected afterwards. I just kept working in my lab, and here I am with many more publications, posters and research experience! It all works out in the end!
