I'm sorry! I just posted the message out of being anxious. I am sure that you will have a handful of wonderful programs to pick from when it is all said and done!

WHOA I am both shocked and thankful that I did not know about this site earlier... thank you for sharing! I was surprised to see such early results submitted. Hope you're right and that good news is on the way for both of us!

Cheers to both of these! And I'm totally with you, TheLifeofBrian, on both dreading losing my current salary but also knowing in the long run it will be worth it for my happiness. I think almost every prof I talked to leading up to submitting my applications was like...you are a real human with a real job...why in the world would you go back for your PhD now? Haha, but I know it is what I have to do!

Absolutely. I meant to go back in my 30s but life happened. I've become disenchanted with corporate work. I've wanted to be a researcher and teacher since my early 20s, so I figured it was high time I got my stuff in order. It will be REALLY hard to lose my current salary, but the saying is true, money isn't everything.

Too old? HAHAHAHA I'm 41 and doing it. At 27, you'll be fine. If you're wanting to be a Professor, most don't retire until their 70s, so....

My browser keeps blocking me from accessing the website saying "The Connection is not private". Anyone else getting that?
Makes me think the site might have been hacked.

Just got an acceptance from UAlbany (SUNY) Politics PhD! They said I'm on a short wait list for funding. I really need that, because I can't afford it any other way. Fingers crossed!

I went into this application season focused on the "fit". I found Professors and departmental expertise in all of the mentioned programs that could help me with my research. My interest deals with media, public opinion, political ideology, and destruction of democratic norms in the US.

I did the same thing but choose a Masters at Georgetown back in 2008 rather than a PhD from UConn! And yeah, the UK programs can be tough for funding. They opened up ESRC funding to international students this year, and there are a couple other niche studentships I've applied for that relate to the conflict/feminist nature of my research proposal, but I know I may very well get into Edinburgh and/or Manchester but not be offered funding. Seemed worth a try, though, since the professors from both of those programs are such amazing fits for my interests. We will see!

They definitely are much better in the US.

I studied at Edinburgh during undergrad. Probably my favorite city ever.

I applied and got into Edinburgh back in 2008 for a PhD, but ended up choosing Dartmouth for my Masters instead. I often wonder if that was the right choice. I think Edinburgh is an AMAZING school and considered it this round, but I find the funding options in the US are much better (or at least I understand them better).

Despite having an MPP from Georgetown, good GRE scores, and 8 years experience at the State Department and the White House, when I applied the first time for the 2017 cycle I only applied to Harvard, MIT, Berkeley, Stanford, and USCD - no safety schools, I didn't reach out to professors because I was living in Khartoum, Sudan, and was super busy, and not surprisingly I didn't get in anywhere. So this time around I was super focused on fit before ranking, talking to profs at every program, included a couple safety schools, and fingers crossed will do better this time! As you can tell from my programs I'm clearly an IR/Conflict Studies person Good luck to everyone out there!
