I asked Brown about the timeline since it seems that in past years, everybody knew their decision (positive or not) in February. The music dept. director responded that they have sent their decisions to the dean of grad. studies, but they're not allowed to contact applicants until the dean gives the thumbs up, and that should be any day now. I can't decide if this means that yeah, they really haven't contacted anybody yet, or they HAVE contacted successful applicants in an "unofficial" way but they can't tell me that.

Isn't NYU slower in general across almost every department? I actually just contacted another school because I was desperate. They said 4-8 weeks, and it's the 9th week, so yeah.

Dreams are cruel. It was pretty clear to me that since I haven't heard from Harvard, I've been rejected, as it seems the good news went out around Feb. 20 and the bad news is coming in now via post. I had an Inception dream within a dream last night in which I was accepted to Harvard in dream level 1, had a 2nd-level dream about getting accepted into Harvard in level 2 too, and woke up to my level 1 dream incredulous (because of the above reasons) but then ecstatic that yes, it was true. Then I REALLY woke up and now I hate my brain.

One of my letters arrived the day of my friend's birthday party for which I was going to be the designated driver. So then I made someone else be the driver.

I reread my acceptance letters....from undergrad.

I just got a waitlist email from NYU GSAS (I applied to Ethno, but they didn't mention that in the email). I've been crying with joy for the last ten minutes about it because my dream was to be at least waitlisted somewhere! I don't know what this means about any other type of notification for GSAS. Edited to add: This email came at 1:00 am EST. Edited also to add: I haven't heard from Harvard either. I'm sensing rejection there.

As another applying to ethnomusicology programs I'll have you know that I am no competition for you (3.6 GPA, GRE verbal good but not anything else, unrelated work experience)! (yes I know it's all about fit and bla bla bla)

I haven't heard anything besides Cornell either. I think NYU GSAS notifies later than others anyway.

I applied to four super dream schools and nothing else. But whatever! I've already got it in my head to reapply next year and lower my standards. It's the worst when you have to explain to everybody -- family, friends, coworkers, etc -- that you've been rejected and you might be rejected everywhere. But like if any of us get an acceptance now, it's THAT MUCH MORE AWESOME because of the contrast!
