Yeah, I had to submit it tonight because my husband and I are leaving for DC in the morning (we are stopping there for a few days before heading up to Chicago), and I was so pissed when I realized there wasn't somewhere to submit a CV. Of all the places I would want to see my CV, Cornell is the one. Oh well...
-
Bdon, I'll be in Chicago later this week. I'm originally from there, so my husband I will be in the south suburbs for Christmas! Now, for my hourly grievance. Cornell has no where for you to submit a CV. Awesome.

I am having such a hard time writing my "fit" paragraph for Cornell. I don't know why this one is stressing me out more than anyone since the likelihood of me actually getting in is one in a billion.....

Any good conferences coming up?
Timshel replied to Grunty DaGnome's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'll be presenting at the CEA conference in Richmond this March. -
Crisis averted. The transcript was in my maiden name, so it was misfiled. phew!
-
UGH. I just got an email from UCR saying they don't have a transcript from one of the schools I attended, but it was mailed November 10th. Grrrrr.....

If you click on the application, it says this: "Two letters of recommendation. Letters submitted as a part of your application for graduate study in the English Department will automatically be transferred to this application. If you have had teaching experience, we encourage you to send us an additional letter referring to this work."

I know! I think the website says the deadline is February, but I think it's silly to have EVERYONE also apply to the comp program. They should just make the people who were accepted. I also have questions because they state that they need two LORs, and they will send two from the general app, and then the sheet asks you to list their names. Uh, how the hell should I know which ones they are getting? It also states that if you have taught before, they want you to send another letter from someone who can speak to your teaching, so of course, I have to send that, too, and they don't really provide information on how that should be done. I'm dreading doing that one.....

Once I submit Cornell's tonight/tomorrow morning, I don't have any more due until mid-January, so I am taking a two week break from them while I go on vacation.

Amherst said something similar to this on their application. It said one page that if you had to mail anything (which you do) that you should print out the last page and then send that with your documents, or provide something that has all of your information on it. I had already mailed my documents in, and coincidentally provided all the information that they wanted anyway, but then, when I clicked submit, it said: print this page and send with your supplemental materials. So. Confusing. I just said fuck it and figured that what I sent with my materials is probably good enough. The only difference was that the print out had my application number on it. I'm sure that just helps them locate your stuff quicker.

Dumb personal statement question.
Timshel replied to hermia11's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I just put my name in the header because I felt it was implied what it was. Cornell, though, tells you specifically what they want you to have. I think it's your full name and the program on every page. I can't remember, but it says it on the application. For my writing sample, though, I do have a header and heading. -
I sent some things only 5 days before the deadline but didn't stress about it because it takes them days to get all of the materials to the right place, and the post office told me the estimated time was 3 days to get there, so I figured I'd take my chances. They'd see the post mark date and know that if it got there really late, it wasn't my fault. I mean, if we are really going to air a grievance, it should be for any school that requires ANYTHING be sent to them, whether it's writing samples, transcripts, etc. Boo on them!

Thanks for the reassurance. I am leaving this Saturday, so I still plan to get it done before then, but I just wanted to make sure I didn't somehow misread it and miss the 5pm deadline today.
-
I just read over each of the emails AGAIN to make sure I didn't misread it because I have a lot of grading that I have to get done before the 20th, so I would like to do that first, but I am still sort of paranoid/nervous to not turn in the Cornell application by 5pm today.

DONE. Ugh. Anyone else done?
Timshel replied to darjeelingtea16's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Okay, so I'm not done, but I'm just about done with my December apps. I just submitted my application to Kansas, which is application 6 that I have completed. Now alli have to do is finish my SOP for Cornell and submit that one, which I plan on doing tomorrow, and then I am taking a break until after Christmas. I have three that are due mid January, so I can worry about them AFTER the holidays. -
I received 3 emails from them clarifying, so I am assuming it is correct.

Conference travel funding
Timshel replied to JeremiahParadise's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'd be interested in hearing the answer as I am also part-time faculty and I have presented at conferences, and I just pay for it out of pocket. I see it as building my CV and I always try to work it into a vacation, too.- 4 replies

Has anyone turned in the separate application the composition program yet? It's not due until February, so I'm not going to worry about it until the rest of my applications are done. However, I do find it a little weird that EVERYONE has to send in an application. You would think that they would just ask those who were admitted to send one in. Seems a little unnecessary. -
Yeah, I wish I would have known so I could have them send paper copies, but it'll be nice to get it done early. My plan is to (hopefully) submit it tonight.

Sending two writing samples?
Timshel replied to wintergirl's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
If I use a chapter from my master's thesis as my second sample, could I just give an abstract explaining what came before it, etc, and then that way I don't have to touch the chapter, or should I still fix it up to work as a separate entity. I like the chapter as it is. It was edited to death through the thesis process, so I really don't want to change anything. I would rather just slap an abstract/explanation on it, especially since they will get a second sample that is a complete paper that is an independent entity. Does that sound okay? What do you guys think? -
500 word SOPs are the WORST!

Any Chapel Hill-ers?
Timshel replied to 0000000000AAA's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Well, maybe last year it went back up, but I know a couple of people there who started about two years ago, and there were only like 4 who were accepted that year. Maybe it was longer ago than I remember. -

I meant the amount of students, not the amount of faculty. They have recently changed to accept even less students because North Carolina does not allow tuition remission, so they have to offer more in TAships and Fellowships to cover the tuition costs, which has to come out of the amount of money they have to give to students. -

I think it doesn't get "much love" because it's an incredibly small program. Like, handful of people, small. -
Actually, the English department specifically states that all materials need to be submitted by December 31st, including the LORs. Boo.
