Lox, I have actually never taken or studied for the GRE, but consider myself a fairly strong math student and a good test taker. I think studying for the test has everything to do with an individual's personal strengths and weaknesses, hence there is no "normal". I honestly think I could probably tackle the quantitative section with very little review, whereas the verbal would certainly be more difficult for me. Other people would obviously say the opposite.

Since you're doing a Master's in Engineering Management, what you have read is correct. These programs are largely course and/or project based, and significant research experience is not expected. It depends on the nature of your thesis or projects. Research is pretty broad, so they could or could not qualify as "research" depending on what you did.

I find speed pretty much comes only with practice when it comes to math problems. You'll then be able to figure out the "trick" more quickly. Whether you have time to do a ton of practice problems is up to you.

I had my first symptoms of impostor syndrome today. I sat in on some presentations from the summer students who are now finished their projects and a lot of it sounded like gibberish. Some of them didn't explain things as well as they could have, however. On the bright side, I figure that if these undergrads can do such great projects in 4 months, I'll be able to pick things up. Otherwise I'm spending a lot of time on transit and killing time between various appointments.

My boyfriend and I are living together while I go to grad school. I just moved here away from all of my family and friends, so that puts a little bit of strain on things. But I am going to play rugby (instant friends) and for some random reason a lot of my friends and acquaintances are moving here too. He works a lot, but he is definitely trying hard to make time to help me out with the transition. Right now nothing has really started so I pretty much have nothing to do. I know that I'm also going to have to try to keep weekends for personal time, at least during rugby season where I'm practicing 3 evenings a week.

Question for the Engineers (woot!)

I think I usually see stuff like that listed in the Methods section of the paper. -
Resume Vs. CV for Grad School
ktel replied to butterfingers2010's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
I would assume they mean a CV, but it would be best for you to contact them and ask -
I think you're really putting way too much emphasis on a few Bs. Your other grades are good, your first semester at MIT was good, so I wouldn't worry about it. If you're going for an MS I think you should be OK without a ton of significant research experience as long as you have some. What kind of letters would your profs if they're not commenting on your ability to do research? A "did well in class" letter is never good, and I could see this hurting your application more than the Bs you got in one semester at MIT.

I just flew here yesterday and woke up this morning feeling sick...I guess all the stress of moving and packing finally caught up to me. I need to get better by Monday so I can go to rugby try-outs. I start getting busy next week.

As I got into my upper years my profs got a lot nicer about doing this as well, or scanning assignment questions from the book so it was optional.

My boyfriend just got one. Paid $250 though from someone who bought it for $99. They're discontinuing it, correct? Hence the cheap price?

Contacting Professors at Ultra Competive Schools
ktel replied to puffin444's topic in Computer Science
When I was checking out Aero/Astro at MIT a little while ago I specifically remember them recommending that you contact professors before you apply. I would see if the department website says anything similar to that, but based on that I would recommend that you do make contact. The worst that can happen is you are ignored. It's not like the prof is going to blacklist you or anything. They're just not going to remember you or respond. If you can clearly explain why a non-CS faculty member would be central to your research, then sure, maybe mention them. Otherwise I would stick to CS profs and then try to pursue a novel project once you're admitted. -
It's a Departmental Masters Seminar. Should be good to watch as I will have to give one before I graduate

I've heard people make this suggestion multiple times on this forum, and it's a great one in my opinion: ask one of your LoR writers to address the issue. That way you don't have to talk about it at all, and someone else can say "ribaldry has achieved great success in her grad program despite her panic disorder" or something like that. That's my 2 cents. I know nothing about grad school in the humanities otherwise.
-
You're hearing a lot of disparity in terms of opinions, because obviously everyone is different. I know from undergrad that I work more efficiently and faster than some people. I often study less, spend less time on homework, and write tests more quickly than a lot of my peers. So adding in a varsity rugby schedule on top of my engineering course work was manageable for me, but wouldn't have been for some others. People also have different programs. I'm going into Aerospace Engineering. I don't anticipate having to spend many hours reading, where a History or English student will spend the bulk of their time reading. I personally think grad school will be fine. I'll let you know in a couple of months how it actually goes...

Any info on the NSERC (PGS-M) university selection process?
ktel replied to hungryhungryhipster's topic in The Bank
Yeah, the instructions say there is a special circumstances page for PGS-M applications. On the online form (Form 201), on the side there is a button that says "Special Circumstances" and you upload a PDF -
Does anyone know? My new adviser has invited me to a DMS rehearsal, presumably as a way to meet some of his research group, but I have no idea what it is. Can anyone shed some light?

To Whom It May Concern? I seem to recall that's what my references put

Transfer Question ... Regarding Financial Issues
ktel replied to archsoutherner's topic in Officially Grads
Could you use this as a bargaining tool to maybe get some funding? I think honesty would be important in this situation. You should be up front with whoever could help you (professor, department employee) about the fact that you need funding here or you will be forced to go elsewhere. If they don't pull through for you, perhaps that means it's a good idea that you're leaving. I doubt they would begrudge you too much if you obviously can't afford it. -
Everybody spends different amounts of time on different things. I know several people who have very bad anxiety and definitely spend WAY more time than me on studying and homework as a result. I spend 2-3 hours studying, they spend 5-10. If I spent that amount of time on schoolwork, I too wouldn't have much time for anything else. Luckily I am efficient and get rewarded with free time as a result.

That definitely sounds really really weird. And obviously inappropriate. I would be looking for a new adviser if I were her.
