  1. I never heard of it before, but it sounds pretty awesome.
  2. Yes, the whole world is a thread for that.
  3. ...and bump again for 2012. Thanks for finding this thread Ameona!
  4. Wow, the most intersting thing about UCSB [where I did my undergrad] is how little money they give you and for how few years! Crazy! A beautiful campus though, but I don't know if I'd go back if it would plunge me into certain debt. As for your interests, JeremiahParadise, I think Tufts is a great fit program for you. You might also check out BC. Chris Wilson is great for American Studies and many profs there do Queer theory.
  5. What about this, how often does this stuff happen? Thanks god none of us applied to Vassar. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/29/education/vassar-applicants-are-mistakenly-told-they-are-accepted.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=vassar&st=cse
  6. Nice find! It seems as though open house is always right around March 3-5 based on old results postings. The sad pattern that emerges from the results board seems to be that many get formal acceptances AFTER the open house. But then, it's too early to even worry, since I have no invite in the first place.
  7. If you are applying to NYU and are even a little obsessive...welcome. You have no doubt checked the results boards going back a year or two, and you have no doubt noticed that in 2010, NYU seems to have started doing interviews...or some kind of meet and greet at the open house...which may have included only 32-35 students competing for the remaining 9 spots after the unconditional acceptances went out. You may have also noticed, that in 2010, posters on the results board say that NYU got more applications than usual, which is when this informal interview/open house thing started. However, results posted in 2011 suggests they repeated their open house weekend. This year, the application deadline was moved up by 2 weeks. I don't know what any of this means. I just wanted to put it all out there for discussion. Let the panicking and obsessing begin!!!!
  8. I'm nothing but busy. It makes both working and waiting harder than it otherwise would be. I'd much rather be running, powerlifting, taking a class and cleaning my house. Anything but a desk job.
  9. Did any of you ever read The Arrival by Sean Tan? It's a graphic novel -- completely told through illustrations -- about immigrating, told/drawn by an Australian author. I think Americans, myself included, always privilege New York as the emigre destination of choice. I thought it was nice to construct a narrative out of Tan's illustrations that wasn't ever inconsistent with the turn of the century NY immigrant story, but which was definitely set somewhere else. It made the process of immigrating/acculturating feel so much more universal.
  10. Right. You probably did very well on the GRE word problems.
  11. I think Tufts is especially nice not to let you spend on more minute in agony.
  12. Get yourself a 100 gift certificate to Sbux and consult the magic 8 ball instead: http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~ssanty/cgi-bin/eightball.cgi
  13. After looking at the ad boards...again, it looks like CUNY and UMASS results are due out, perhaps by the end of the coming week, though more likely the week after.
  14. What would be great is if people would post their area of specialization in the notes...just to give the rest of us more info to obsessively pour over
  15. A couple of schools moved up their deadline, so it's anybody's guess if that means they'll notify earlier or not. NYU is one such school, I think. Notifications used to be mid-late February, but now, who knows?
  16. Well, it wasn't me, but I did notice it was a "waitlist/other" entry and the comment stated that Yale doesn't do interviews for the English PhD. I think this comment was left by a Yale hopeful who called the department asking about interviews and thought they would share their info/spare the Yale English Department similar calls from Grad Cafe readers.
  17. I keep getting a weird call that asks me to press 1 to accept the charges. I think it must be from jail. I don't want to wish death on this person, just in case I get my wish, since, when I'm not stressed out about applications, I'm strongly against captial punishment. Let's just say I'm annoyed, even though I realize my life could be worse and I could be the one in jail.
  18. It's weird how time can move so slowly where decisions are concerned, yet so quickly in all other respects. For instance, I'm already into my second week of my final semester and I'm woefully behind. I feel like this month flew by at work while tasks piled up and I got nothing done
  19. Some programs let spouses of employees earn an MA for free. Maybe you guys shouldn't break up. Maybe you should get married instead! [Check UTs policy first, of course.]
  20. I've probably gone a complete 180 and now I'm FEARING that I get accepted. I think I need a year off
  21. Oh crap! That's true! Now I'm having a heart attack because my rejection...I mean acceptance....no, be real, my rejection letter is likely only 3 weeks away instead of 4.
  22. I'm in this boat. I have an undergraduate degree in German Lit, AND I've been out of school for 10 years. While in some ways I think a recent B.A. student might say, throw around the lingo better than I do, [i KNOW they proof read better], there is just no way to compare our applications. It only makes sense that a department would want a few younger applicants, who have yet to discover their interests and unique point of view and some older students with more school, all different faculty perspectives, work/life experience and very poor spelling abilities. That's my hope, anyway.
