ANDS! got a reaction from cdjdaniels in GRE scores for MA vs PhD
I would check to see if the GRE is even required if you have obtained a Masters already. Typically though, GRE scores for Masters will be lower for PhD's.

I dunno - I'd be super nervous too at that age attending an overseas program.

    "my phd-advisor stole my man"

I have nothing else to contribute to this conversation.

ANDS! got a reaction from lewin in Is it a bad idea to defer admission while vising the school?
That is a pretty presumptive statement to make. "Sh*t happens. . ." isn't just a saying, and for some people attending school is done so on a very precarious tightrope of juggling financial responsibilities. My entire undergrad I was on the razors edge where any financial difficulty could've derailed my progress.

Fingerwagging that they should have had a couple 10K or so socketed away so they could afford (I'm assuming) a masters (even worse for a PhD), on top of everything else, is a bit ridiculous.

You shouldn't have qualified your desire for the first authorship with "I need it for. . ." - essentially giving the man an out. You need it because it is rightfully yours. At this point though I suppose you've missed that window unless you REALLY want to push this point and there are no other opportunities to make up for this missed one.

Jesus I don't know how some of you were able to handle college life. This transition is similar to the one you should have experienced when you went from lower division to upper division coursework. The jump will be even steeper, but if you have adequately prepared yourself then all the tools will be there for success. These people do not want you to fail and will do everything they can so that it doesn't happen.

As for whether you can bail out and grab a Masters on them - this should have been something covered during a "getting to know you. . ." session or is something you need to ask your advisor. No one here can answer that for you since no one knows the program you are in.

Did you do a year of analysis/algebra? Is the Linear Algebra upper division or lower? Analysis, LA and an introduction to Prob/Stats are what they are going to look for on your application.

Retake the quantitative? For a theater/drama PhD? Surely you jest.

To the OP, find the school of interest and look at what the emphasize in their admission procedure. It is more than likely that a quantitative score will not be noted, but the verbal will be. You're contributing to the cultural fabric - not building a rocket-ship to Taurus-IV.

God damn. What kind of sofa are you going for. Prime has (and this is all in terms of grad student functionality over form) a good selection of sofas under 1000. Now, how comfy they will be or if they will meet your personality remains to be seen.

That said, there is something to be said for going the IKEA route (I'll be purchasing my bed frame from them).

ANDS! got a reaction from Hanyuye in Complicated academic history. Not sure what schools to aim for?
Sorry, I read that as "Anything else I can do to improve my chances. . ." which is the usual refrain you hear in these situations. And no, it's not "I can't get in anywhere. . .", but you certainly will have to be incredibly realistic about where you apply. Thing is, your best grade is an A- in real analysis. So while there is an upward trend, and you've done better, it's not THAT drastic of a shift in the other direction. Realistically, the academic performance you have RIGHT NOW, is what is going to go into your application as the fall semester will not be over before some applications are due; those that have Jan/Feb march deadlines, will an extra .1 gpa boost be that much of a difference - most likely not.

I would say a top 50-100 school is definitely doable. As for your letters of recommendations, if a professor is NOT going to write you an EXCELLENT LOR, there is no reason to get it from them. "Just ok. . ." is just as pointless as a bad one. Look them square in the eye and ask them "What kind of letter is this going to be - ". With your academic background, you do not need a run-of-the-mill LOR sinking you.

ANDS! got a reaction from Hanyuye in Math modeling of infectious diseases?
Epi/Biostatistics deals with the analysis of datasets and information in order to make inferences. Biomath however deals with developing more mechanical and predictive models of biological phenomena. If that is what you mean by "mathematical modeling" though, you might want to start using the correct language (in SOP's for instance), or grad committees might look at your application and think "Is this person sure what they are applying for. . ."

Also, most of those programs will have very large schools of Public Health (Emory definitely does), and if your background includes Calculus and Linear Algebra, then you should have little trouble being competitive. However, if you are positive you are going on to a PhD program, there is no reason to apply to their Public Health programs, and you should instead apply directly to their PhD program. The top programs all have some full-funding of some sort (Emory does funding for the first three years. . .after that you need to secure funding on your own - TA or RA or outside position).

Oh please. Not all of CL is bad, and if a person is using another site to find roomies chances are that site is pulling from CL. What one does need to do is be smart about using CL in their searches.

ANDS! got a reaction from R Deckard in what does it mean when it says 100% first year financial support?
For most schools tuition is such a small part of their operating income, I'd be surprised to find a program where students weren't getting full tuition waivers (not talking about the "admitted but unfunded" folks).

ANDS! got a reaction from R Deckard in When to ask for recs??
Make sure when you ask for letters or recommendation you ask them not "Can you write a letter for me. . ." but "Are you able to write a STRONG letter of recommendation for me. . ." Instructors will often give you what you ask for and some students here have gotten sticker shock when they realize a lackluster LOR might have done them in.

As for when, you can ask them any time, but generally two months in advance is enough time for them. While they will speak to your strengths that they are aware of - a lot of these folks are old hands at writing these letters and more likely than not to pull out an old one.
