  1. Not 100% sure, but I highly doubt it. I have a friend from Israel who is here on a student visa, and I believe she's done some volunteer work. I know she had an internship at an elementary school, and they would do a pretty thorough background check. If there were a visa issue, they probably would have found it. I think you would be fine!
  2. Haha, I think my school as a whole is just unusually catty. I am glad that it's not the norm!
  3. Maybe you could consider volunteering at an animal shelter in the US? I know grad students don't have a ton of time, but if you spend an hour a week taking care of dogs and playing with them, it might make you happy
  4. Thanks! For all the flaws we have a student body, I do give us credit for our appreciation of our professors and of our education in general. We reach a nice level of familiarity with them without sacrificing respect. They're wonderful mentors who know how to work with our perfectionism by pushing us to our limits while somehow maintaining support.
  5. Roommate: "Your program is funded, right?" Me: "Yep." Roommate: "That's nice. How much are they offering you?" Me: "Enough." Roommate: "Have you started looking at apartments yet?" Me: "Yeah, I'm pretty sure I know which apartment complex I'll choose." Roommate: "How much will your rent be?" Me: "Affordable." Roommate: "Under or over $500?" Me: "Affordable." Things I hate: Talking about money with this particular roommate. Things I love: Driving him crazy by casually refusing to do it.
  6. Probably true. The whole university has the kind of stereotypical high school environment that I never experienced at my enormous high school. I made friends easily my entire life until I got here and realized I had no experience with relational aggression. I'm happy for you that you were able to avoid the drama! I hate the social scene here, but I stuck around for the amazing professors. Many of us do.
  7. Sorry for the giant picture! This is my lovely, 9-year-old golden retriever, Tuscany. He lives with my mom and she's slightly obsessed with him. I'm planning to adopt a cat in grad school and name her Vienna, after my favorite Billy Joel song. I love dogs, but I won't be home often enough in grad school to give him/her enough exercise. It wouldn't be fair to the dog.
  8. Sigh. Can't finish undergrad without a bit of intradepartmental drama.

  9. I'm a graduating senior starting a Ph.D. program in the fall. I come from a small college and a pretty ambitious department. A lot of us applied to grad school. This entire semester, I've seen a lot of drama related to grad school admissions. Lots of anxiety, bitterness, mixed feelings about each other's success, and just plain cattiness and backstabbing. It's disappointing. I'm pretty satisfied with how I've handled it, mostly because I've been the major target for criticism. I'm not going to whine on here about the nasty things people say, but I am curious to know if others have encountered this problem at the end of undergrad. For what it's worth, my true friends have been great! We've had our issues, and we've all said things we now regret, but we've worked through it and are genuinely happy for one another.
  10. This is a great answer! It's pretty much what I say, but better.
  11. I wouldn't think of it as pathetic. There's a reason we apply to so many schools. It's really really tough. Admissions decisions are based on many factors, most of which are out of our control and do not reflect on our caliber as people or students. Does my 10% acceptance rate hurt my feelings a bit? Yeah, of course. But everyone told me, "one acceptance is all you need," and they're right.
  12. I don't even own a TV, let alone a desktop computer. The 13" screen works fine for everything from data entry to watching movies for me, but maybe I'm just used to it!
  13. I have a 13" MacBook Pro. For the most part, I like it! The size is great. I carry it in a soft case that fits in my backpack.
  14. They do seem superhuman most of the time, don't they? I agree!
  15. Finally celebrating the fact that I'm going to grad school. Drink ALL the things!

  16. I agree. It sounds like she might have been having a rough day/week. I wouldn't let that automatically stop you from asking her for a letter. From what I've been told, interviews for faculty positions in any field really are horrible. Thankfully, it's a small portion of the career.
  17. No, I don't think it is in bad taste at all. Both of those gifts sound like good ideas to me. Congratulations on getting in!
  18. Congratulations! Me too
  19. Having a "holy sh*t I'm actually going to grad school" moment. In a good way.

Yay! I'm coming to the same realization! Surreal...

  20. If it is a duplicate, that's because it's sadly common! I'm not quite old enough for everyone to inquire about the status of my uterus yet, but I'm sure it's annoying. Especially when education and motherhood are thought to be mutually exclusive! Most of my professors (male and female) are parents, and they balance everything just fine.
  21. I got through the first round of rejections, but my email came yesterday. No interview, no waitlist. It was a generic, mass email.
  22. That's the worst feeling. I don't know your story, or why you now think you deserve 5 straight rejections, but I can empathize.
  23. I'm going to send a card. Thanks for the advice!
  24. Do you know if the email was from their POI? If it was, and you have a different POI, yours could have just not sent the email yet. That happened with my acceptance. My friend checked Grad Cafe and told me that someone had gotten accepted to my program by email. I completely freaked out. My POI sent my email two days later and all was okay.
  25. Cold feet over here too. Being rejected by my top choice last week is still stinging, and it was a surprise rejection (as in, they led me to believe I was a shoo-in even after the interview). I understand the feeling. I still went ahead and accepted the offer I got, and I believe I will be very successful and happy there. But it doesn't feel 100% right.
