Pauli got a reaction from littlemy in Texas A&M- No Tuition Wavers... At All?
Well, in-state tuition is also waived for both TAs and RAs as well.  I actually was inaccurate about my previous post.  What I should have said that TAs and RAs have their in- and out-of-state tuition waived, while student workers who are not Texas residents are able to be classified as in-state students and get their tuition waived depending on what kind of student worker job they have.

2.7 GPA and got into a decent grad school. The university also had a minimum 3.0 GPA requirement, but that was overlooked because...
    Reference letters from world-famous professors
    Double majored
    Rreasonably high GRE score
    Diverse and tough course load
    Active participation in student organizations
    Fluency in a second language
    Several years of study abroad
    A year of undergraduate research
(Okay, fine. I'm a Pacific Islander too)

Anyway, I don't buy into that stereotype that low-GPAers can't get into decent grad school. If you have the academic portfolio, then you have the credentials.

    EDIT: I <3 this thread.

Pauli got a reaction from SarahReed in need advice regarding putting unpublished paper on resume!
You may want to not include this journal publication on your resume. If the review committee checks more closely, they may disregard this publication since it wasn't formally published, or in the worst case, consider it unethical to include it since it isn't officially published or on track to be published.

There are three types of Ford Foundation Fellowship awards:
Pre-Doctoral: For incoming and first-year doctoral students. Doctoral: For doctoral students already in candidacy and finishing their last year. Post-Doctoral: For post-doctoral students. The applicants discussing in this thread have primarily been the pre-doctoral ones. They tend to be optimistic and energetic. The applicants in the other other categories have not been as talkative because the spark in their eyes have already disappeared from the devastating battles they fought throughout their PhD years.

No no I'm not reading much into it. Its just one of my pet peeves that I've noticed is ubiquitious in academia. Would love to see others who may share my disdain for it.

Everybody does it. It's like saying 'have a great day!' to service providers or signing your email with '(warm) regards.' It's a polite communications convention. Trust me, you wouldn't like it if everyone signed the email with what they really think about you! Don't you think you're reading too much into this?

I'm gonna give you my honest opinion, but please bear in mind that this is just my opinion.

I think you need to take a few years off before thinking of applying to graduate school. A bad undergraduate GPA won't break you (hell, I have one too) as an applicant, however, it doesn't look good when it's paired next to an empty resume. What I recommend is you take a couple of years off and build your resume -- find relevant work, internships, and/or research, etc. If your financial situation eases up, you can take a few graduate courses as a non-matriculated student or get a graduate certificate. Doing well in these classes can show graduate schools that you can handle graduate-level classes. It also doesn't hurt to have graduate school professors vouch for your academic abilities in your letters.

What you can do right now before you graduate is maintain good relations with your professors and advisors. You may need them later as letter writers. You can also try to see if there are any professors willing to take you under their wing in their labs/research.

I realize I was all over the place in my response... In short, take some time off and work on yourself: get some experience and build a resume....then kick the GRE's ass and get into school. You'll make it. It'll just take some time. Believe me when I say this. I graduated with a bad GPA and I only did slightly above average on my GRE...but I took a year off, worked, did research, volunteered, and cranked out some minor publications. And I'm very hopeful I'll get into graduate school next Fall.

Anyways, good luck. You got this.

You might want read all the instructions material, since everything you'll need to know is listed. If you don't submit it in the correct way, your application won't be reviewed.

This is not an unusual situation for pre-dissertation applicants. What you need to do is provide candidate reference letter writers your resume/CV and a report describing your academic situation, such as classes you took, your academic relationship to the reference letter writer, any research you've done, what your future plans are, your research interests, etc.

Pauli got a reaction from comp12 in Is it bullshit?
Supply and demand. There are only so many seats in the classroom, buildings to hold those seats, qualified instructors and professors to teach those courses, etc. With many applicants, the admissions committee has to carefully consider the best fit applicants.  If they just accept anyone, then lower-quality students will degrade the program since on-going and emerging research would have less chances to succeed (so decreased opportunities to fund future projects from funders) and less successful students graduating (so less companies willing to donate resources).

That might not be the right question to ask. The better question is whether you are willing to learn something useful in grad school. Grad school is where you have to learn to take the initiative to learn while there. They're not going to spoonfeed you should and should not know; that would be what trade schools do.
