FacelessMage got a reaction from dormcat in [Politics] Anyone concerned their area of study (freedom to research/publish, funding from state & federal levels) will be affected by Trump administration?
I worry about two things with this administration:
    1) international student visas: I didn't work over 5 years to get to this goal only to have some cheeto who's never had to work hard toward anything in his life destroy my dreams when he changes the rules about international student visas
    2) my clinical/research work: I plan to work with/conduct research with offenders with mental illness. With Trump being elected, I can see a dual "tough on crime"/defunding of the CJS happening at the same time, and it worries me.

Nope. The interview was on a Monday as well. I feel like schools are unnecessarily harsh to people who work full time while applying.

That's the struggle I'm facing. I'm starting this new job on January 30....my first interview is the 3rd. I'm already taking 3 days off in my first 2 weeks to interview for PhD programs (which they don't know about) and I very much can't afford to take anymore off because this job is my fallback option if I get rejected from everywhere. I won't have this problem if I stayed in my current job since my boss was one of my references.

Thanks! I'm fortunate that all but 1 of the original 5 interviews I got invited for (not counting the 2 I got today) will do it over phone or Skype. I just wish the interviews were held on weekends, would be a lot easier for travel.

It's a preliminary interview via Skype. From my understanding (via my friend at Ryerson), the POIs usually contact folks for a preliminary interview before the invitations to the interview day go out.
Also, thanks! This is my fourth time applying, and I can't believe the amount of success that I've had!

SFU does all their notifications through email. If you didn't get an invitation to interview, you'll likely get a rejection email within the next 2 weeks (this is my fourth time applying to SFU, so I know the drill).

This has been my experience in past cycles. Some schools will often have one shortlist of maybe double the amount of spots, and perhaps a backup list in case they go through the first, but will drag on sending out rejections until all the spots are filled. Occasionally they'll send out multiple rounds of rejections, starting with those who don't meet the criteria. October is really ridiculous though. Someone really dropped the ball there considering the APA standard of April 15 for people to accept their offers.

I feel like "ranking" clinical programs in Canada is pointless if they're accredited by the CPA. I think the rankings matter more in the US since there's a glut of non-accredited clinical PhD and PsyD programs. There's the basics such as funding, practicum opportunities, etc. that you need to consider when making a decision, but it's more important to consider the reputation of your individual POI, as they're the ones who will, largely, be writing reference letters for you, which will determine what internship opportunities you get (take it from me, the right POI can open doors for you in terms of research and clinical opportunities).
What's most important is that you attend a program that will provide you with the necessary skills and experience to 1) get an accredited internship, and 2) meet the licensing requirements in your province. I have yet to hear of a Canadian program that fails to do this.

The process really does vary by school. At some, it's the individual POIs who choose who they want to interview. At others, it's decided by the clinical committee.

    Second interview at Southern Mississippi!!
So another question....how should I go about accommodating all these interviews while working a full time job? I'll be starting a new job in January, and now I'm very stressed.

Thank you! I'll have to check out Ann Taylor sometime in the next month or so. Express is also having a big sale this week so I may pick up something from there. I'll have to ask the grad student that will be getting in touch with me.

I research forensic psychology. I applied to anyone I could find doing risk assessment or psychopathy research, and to any programs that had specialty training in forensics.

I don't think they do overnight if it's international, sadly. Luckily, the graduate office will except an emailed copy, so I'm relieved. I just need to spam him until it gets done.

Actually, no, I'm pretty sure it's not part of their job description. They work with current students and former students far more than prospective ones. And, the process has changed a lot, even in the short time since I first went through it. Think about it. Most of these professors were applying to grad school at a time before email was commonly used and the expected response time was quite different back then. If you wrote someone a letter and sent it via USPS, you wouldn't be surprised not to hear for a couple of weeks, you know? Rude or not, I tend to invest more of my time in my current students and writing rec letters for those graduating or recently graduated. When there's time leftover, then I reply to prospective students.

Well, I'm an economics major, so I wouldn't know about sensitivity, but I definitely know that any feature of my kentish boarding-school education did not contradict the overall goal of becoming more knowledgeable and better educated. So sorry, sugar, but your angle that you have a European and therefore starkly original view on the issue is neither accurate nor original, and you can stop touting it. Stiff upper lip

I'm not entirely sure why you read my responses as "badgering", whatever that means in Spain. If Gnome says that fat people must be held responsible for their fatness because people from broken families are held responsible when they become serial killers, YES, he is comparing fat people to serial killers. I'm glad you're going to graduate school in Rhetoric and Composition this fall, where they will be able to teach you this astonishing bit of analysis.

I believe you have been provided, prior in the discussion, with links to studies showing that the health scares you mention are quite weakly correlated with obesity and in most cases more contingent on lifestyle than on BMI. You will also have been provided with links that show that, in the majority of cases, people who diet gain their weight back within 5 years. This is old research, mate, but it makes for some fascinating reading.

But I will go back on a point. You will say, especially since health risks are contingent upon a healthy lifestyle, shouldn't we "build a framework around the ideal of being healthy"? No, your argument is completely impalatable to me, for two reasons. 1) you say you're promoting health, but you're actually promoting thinness. I understand that you're concerned that she can't walk more than 20 paces, but you don't even stop to consider why that is - whether it's a medical condition or a lack of physical conditioning. You immediately pounce on her fat. This whole discussion so far has centered on fat people, not unfit people. I have less of a problem promoting health, but your idea of health includes the idea fat person=unhealthy person, which is patently untrue. You say promoting an "ideal" like it's easy, but it actually involves a lot of measuring and defining of that ideal - because how can you promote an ideal if that ideal is not measurable? Inevitably such a policy would lead to the statistical discrimination of some population. 2) Whenever you're building a social ideal, you're engaging in social engineering. I'm not a libertarian, but I don't believe that creating a mythology of something is useful for anything but social control. People should 1) have access to information that shows that it is physical fitness that reduces the risk of metabolic disease and so on, and not how fat or thin you are, and 2) be able to choose if they want to reduce their risk of metabolic disease, or do something else with their lives. I cannot cede the last point. Body autonomy is a basic freedom, and basic freedoms are protected in the United States. Gnome will chime in here with something along the lines of, "but why must we make special accommodations for fat people, then?" - and you don't, actually. It would be, you know, decent of you to treat fat people like people (not patronize them, not talk down to them, not tell them what to do with their bodies, all of which you have been doing here), and not expressly hinder them from living their lives (you shouldn't be going to grad school if you're so fat!!!). Just do what you do with any other group of people you dislike. Step away and move on.

I'm pretty sure I haven't dissuaded y'all from being assholes, but I hope I have at least elucidated my position.

And now we can close this thread, because it is apparent that there is no such thing as a fat-friendly campus. I doubt there's even a fat-friendly morgue.

I've been doing all of this for a few years with varying levels of success (this is my fourth time applying). I have been told that I am a competitive applicant (strong GPA, good GRE scores, excellent research experience), but it seems that the more I do to improve, the worse my outcomes have been. Clinical psych applications are the worst.

Everyone I know just resubmits the same thing every year, they really don't care. I've also resubmitted the same personal statement, and no one has called me out on it yet (to be honest, they receive so many per year that it's doubtful that they'll remember).
